The lines "Our arrows will blot out the sun," :Then we will fight in the shade," "Saprtans! Lay down your arms," "Pesians! Come and get them!" are actual quotes from the historical account of the Battle of Thermopylae. Spartans were raised to be just as good at cutting down their opponents with words as they were at cutting them down with weapons.

This was based on Frank Millers' graphic novel "300" which was inspired by the old movie "300 Spartans" (which was inspired by the true historical Battle of Thermopylae). Miller saw the movie on TV when he was young, and he said it was the first time he had seen characters who were looked up to for their self sacrifice rather than for their triumph or success. He said that it changed his concept of what it is that makes someone a hero or role model.

The numbers are interesting. Xerxes army was estimated to be between 180,000-200k. The spartan 300 and the athenians were about 1300-2000 (reports vary). They estimate that at the hot gates, the spartans and Athenians managed to kill/wound 20k or so. The area was so difficult to navigate with a large army that the spartans would let the dead pile up so when they (persians) would charge, they'd have to climb over their dead comrades bodies just to get to the spartan lines. Then when the day was done, the spartans would clear the bodies and start all over again. The reason being that they didn't want to get sick. The traitor Ephialtes was immortalized forever in Dante Alighieri's La Divina Commedia (The divine Comedy more commonly known as Dante's Inferno) as being one of the traitors of the world condemned to the 9th sphere of hell right next to Lucifer the king of all traitors.

During the actual historical Battle of Thermopylae there were the 300 Spartans as well as 700 Thespians. When a Spartan would fall in battle, a Thespian would don their gear and act like they were Spartan. This demoralized the Persians as they thought no Spartan had ever fallen. This became the modern definition that thespians are actors.

@@MrAdmitosI think you are right: The thespians, being the first actors in history, were history themselves by then, and actors were now actors and not members of the choir, who´d act like actors (those were the thespians). When the Thespians supported the Spartans at Thermopylae, actrors weren´t thespians (members of the choir) anymore, but dedicated actors instead, already... So, it doesn´t match chronologically... She considered the victory a given, either her son would return alive or the victorious Spartans would carry him on his shield. The goal was victory, not the life of her child.Unique mindset. I know I'm late to the party in telling you this is based on history. There are a few things that are the same. The 300 against the Persians in the hot gates actually happened. And the king during that time period was named Leonidas. But the thing that is most historically accurate is something that nobody ever freakin believes when I tell them but I swear you this is the truth. Most historical records that talk about King Xerxes AGREE that he really was 8' to 10' tall. And that WASNT unheard of. Their was a race of peoples at one time that we today would call giants in the literal sense. Some lived where Kentucky is today. Some in S. America, some in Africa. And they were always the rulers of us regular size folk. If the world ever gets past this bs about "settled science" or "settled history" and starts looking at new discoveries as corrections on flawed history instead of "conspiracy theories" we are going to find out some truly amazing stuff. Bet on it.......but also......bet that will never happen. Why? Well currently our best and brightest say men can have babies so.........

The basic historical facts in this movie is correct. Less than a year after the Hot Gates campaign was the battle of Plateae where the entire Spartan army along with 30 thousand plus other Greek city states did in fact defeat what was left of the Persians. The Greek alliance had less than 10% casualties whereas the Persians were effectively ANNIHILATED with historians believing they suffered 90% casualties

Up to this point, Greece wasn't really so much a nation as a bunch of independent city states with shared cultural roots that that usually competed, and even waged war, against each other. This was a huge step on the road to unting Greece into a true nation. As an aside, it reminds me of a diplomatic document from the Hittite empire which made reference to a "Great King" (a term applied to the rulers of major/"great" kingdoms) which some people tried to connect to ancient Greece, but others pointed out that there was no Greek king at that time who could be considered "ruler of the kingdom of Greece."

@@Hades32 I never said the Persian Empire was a nation. I said that Greece was not a nation, and you saying that "nation" wasn't a even a term back then backs me up. The point was that, unlike people's understanding today of Greece as one country to which all Greek cities owe allegiance, each ancient Greek city state was like a separate, independent country unto itself with an allegiance to itself and therefore had the right and the motivation to say "count me out" when other city states got into wars it didn't want to be part of. The audience needs to realize that the non-corrupt characters who didn't back Leonidas, weren't looking at it as "We refuse to fight for our country" - they were looking at it as "We refuse to fight some other country's war."

Yes this is the telling of a true story of the Battle of Thermopylae, During the Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas, chose the battlefield, and they chose a location to minimize the advantage of the sheer numbers of Zerxes more than 1,000,000 man army, by funneling them into such a small passage, 300 soldiers could control and whittle down the numbers, yes the Spartan's did lose all 300 men, including King Leonidas, but they killed an estimated 200,000 of Zerxes's army, back in those days, the Persian empire was big and powerful, but before Thermopylae, it was Zerxes father King Darius who invaded at Marathon, and the Athenians dished out a crippling blow to the Persian army and killed King Darius, it was a couple of years later that his son King Xerxes who was bent on avenging his fathers death, faced the Spartans at Thermopylae, after that humiliating loss, Xerxes then let his men to finish off the Spartans and the Greeks, but all of the Greek city states united for a common cause, and under Spartan leadership, they soundly defeated the Persian army at the battle of Platea, doing so broke the Persian empire permanently and it would never recover, the Persian Empire disintegrated in less than 10 years after Platea, and would never again be a power on the planet again, at one time the Persian Empire's land mas stretched from what is Iran today, their empire extended to include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Saudi, Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia and South Sudan, as we know of those countries TODAY, as the Persian empire constricted while it was dying, they retreated back to what Today we know as Iran, before they disappeared, so the Battle of Thermopylae was a very important event that happened!

3:00 If you come, and tell me that some people sycophant me behind my back, it´s not them who tell those things, it´s you, it´s that simple... A diplomat has to always be able to prove, that he´s neutral, so, the messenger belongs dead... 32:32 After the end of the battle, of which the begin is depicted at the movie´s ending (in Plataies/platEes), the Greeks have finally crushed the persian armies in Greece. Xerxes has already left in a hurry, running for his life, and has gifted his great tent (more of a mobile palace than a tent) to his main-general, with all its riches inside... the Greeks overtook the persian camp, and the greek generals walked through the god-emperor´s tent in awe of the riches, they faced for the first time in their lives. A spartan general then said jokingly: "Now I understand why the Persians, who seem to possess everything, invade again and again our small Greece... It´s because they want to steal from us they only thing they seemingly don´t own yet: Our humility/poverty..." Of course the Persians HAD to stop the Greeks, so that Monarchy/Oligarchy keeps existing, and Democracy doesn´t spread in the world... 150 years later, Alexander the Great woudl erase the Persian empire from the face of the Earth. Places like northeastern India (Punjab) or southern Afganistan, would remain greek far longer, than even the British or the Americans woudl dream of, when they invaded those countries...

historical/military/war/freedom movies: (not ranked, just listed) 1. Last of the Mohicans (1992) 2. Troy (2004) 3. Gladiator (2000) 4. 300 (2006) // (the sequel though is krappy) 5. Braveheart (1995) 6. King Arthur (2004) 7. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (has a young morgan freeman doing/being a badass fighter) 8. The Mummy (1999) 9. The Mummy Returns (2001) 10. The Scorpion King (2002) 11. 13th Warrior (movie of michael crighton's "eaters of dead" book: beowulf saga / vikings) 12. Dances with Wolves (1990) 13. The Patriot (2000) 14. The Rocketeer (grins, has a sexy young Jennifer Connely, grins) 15. Prince of Persia (2010) 16. The Last Samurai 17. A Knight's Tale 18. Dragonheart (sean conner as the dragon, this was eragon way before eragon was ever written and then made into a movie, lol) // this is fantasy, not historical, lol, but still good and it is “historical-like” 19. Highlander // this is fantasy, not historical, lol, but still good and it is “historical-like” 20. Gods of Egypt // egyptian mythology 21. Apocalypto 22. Pocahontas (disney animated movie) 23. Mulan (disney animated movie) 24. Aladdin (disney animated movie) 25. Robin Hood (disney animated movie with animal characters) 26. First Knight (1995) // (sean connery) 27. Sparticus (1960) 28. Ben-Hur (1959) 29. Pathfinder (2007) // but it’s really not very good: about vikings that came to america, with its conflict/plot of: vikings vs native americans 30. The Mask of Zorro (1998) (and its sequel: The Legend of Zorro, 2005) (and there's the older/original TV series too, and maybe even some older/original movies too, probably, lol) ------------- tv films: (not ranked, just listed) 1. Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula, this IS actually a true historical documentary of the historical Vlad the Impaler, it's really good, too 2. Dark Kingdom: Ring of the Nibelungs (seigfried and brunhilde saga, grins Kirstanna Loken is such a sexy and badass brunhilde, grins) 3. Helen of Troy (has sexy sienna guillory, resident evil 2 movie jill valentine fame, naked, grins, one of the most powerful scenes and lessons of all time, Helen literally usurps all power and the very "crown" away from the greek king, all his time and effort making allies and alliances, loyal military/soldiers, and etc, with just her naked body alone, grins, ya, she was taught well by her "kidnapper" in the art of politics, grins, really good movie too)

I love this movie but it's a bit of an exaggeration, in real life when this battle took place the numbers were different but the Greeks still were outnumbered pretty strong with 7000 Greek soldiers, were 300 of these was Spartans and the rest was Greek soldiers from all around of Greece, facing a strong Persian force estimated by modern professors to have been around 250 000 strong. They lasted for three days, before they were surrounded and killed off the final day. To cut the story short, Greece would later win the Greco-Persian war at Platea which made the Persian leave Greece for good.

Greeks very often were mercenaries and fought with other Greeks for Persians. Spartans sided with Persians ~70 years after this battle, against other polis. Also they were not that good in comparison. Everyone owned slaves, especially Spartans. Persians were very civilized for this period, not some degenerates. You all have to remember it's just based on comic book not real history.

to think if only Leonidus didn't Discredit and turn away The Hunchback and let The Hunchback Fight in Guarding the goat trail pass....The Spartans could have lived and been victorious...but it was Leonidus sticking to Sparta's Egotistical Ways of not allowing someone deemed a defect who was willing to fight to the death....SMH

Leonidas in real life was about 60, during this battle! Molon Labe'! Come and take them! Repeated by the Texxans,2000;years later st the battle of Gonzales! Signified by a flag with a single black cannon with a black star over it! As a proud Texan I have these tattooed on both of my pecs!
