Georgia Price Meryl Streep has many awards (Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTA, Emmy, Grammy) and nominations under her belt. However, she was also nominated for some underwhelming and so-so performances in some average movies as well (It’s Complicated, Into The Woods, Hope Springs, Mamma Mia, etc). And hence, there is an ongoing joke that as long as Meryl Streep plays any role (even an insignificant one) in a movie, she will get nominated for an acting award (even when another lesser-known actress might deserve it more). And in this context, Amy Poehler simply says that even in sickness, Meryl Streep is “amazing” as the role of a sick woman and she “steals the flu” away (a pun of the phrase “steals the scene” in a movie). I hope that this explanation is comprehensive enough for any of you.
