The issue is that Scarlet lied about only doing it at 18, there's pictures of her from 3 years ago in blackface and there's a clip of a racist lipsync from the start of 2020 where she impersonated an East Asian news reader and then lipsynced to Kung Fu Fighting. That was just a couple of months before she went to do the season so she can't have grown and learnt her lesson that much. All it was is "oh shit I'm caught, here are my excuses now give me AU$30,000"

I would love to know when the producers found out about the blackface. Because it seems like they're trying to create the narrative that they found out because Scarlet volunteered this information, but I don't think that's true. Also, I appreciate Ru and the show for calling out Scarlet and holding her accountable, but it rubbed me the wrong way that as an American Ru decided we're not gonna "cancel" Scarlet and moved on. It would have been nice if the two first nations queens were there to have a conversation about it.

I have an internet friend who’s an Aussie and does drag sometimes. For reference, he’s met both Coco and Maxi multiple times, and knows a lot of Etcetera’s friends. He told me when the cast was announced that back in 2011 or 2012, as a baby queen and a teenager, Scarlett had done Blackface, but she hadn’t done it since then, and he didn’t believe it was a big deal. He was as shocked as everyone else when it came out that she was doing it in 2018, and now 2020. My personal theory is that when Scarlett was asked to audition by producers, her and her friends went on a massive pr campaign deleting as many pictures as they could and spreading rumors that she had done blackface a long time ago so people would assume any that emerged were 9-10 years old.

Hi, I have a friend who sometimes does drag in Australia and has a lot of friends in the drag scene. When the cast was announced and there were some rumors, I asked him about it, and he told me the EXACT SAME STORY Scarlett told on the show, that she was young and dumb and the photos were old. he found out at the same time as everyone else that she had done it much more recently than that. He also told me Australian drag is notoriously cliquey. Personally, my theory is when Scarlett realized she might be able to do the show during quarantine, she and her friends deleted all the pictures they could and spread rumors that it happened when she was a teenager so that people would assume any photos that leaked were from when she was younger (which people did, I remember when it was just the photo of her in the Afro before Felicia Foxx called her out and posted more saying that they were as recent as 2018, people were saying it happened when she was a teen and shouldn’t ruin her career).

There’s evidence of Scarlet in black and yellow face as recently as 2018 , so she didn’t tell the whole truth on the show when she claims it was a one off when she was much younger. In fact , shortly after returning from filming , she made an “apology” , other queens including Felicia Foxx called her on it and she responded with “well f*** you I already apologised”. It’s very let me make sure I can win . Also it wasn’t unknown so producers obviously wanted this redeemed racist storyline which is also gross

Yeah I've been having a lot of conversations lately with other people where I try to express just how deeply rooted harmful ideologies and practices are ingrained into culture. We are socialized for centuries into thinking something is normal and natural (e.g., racial, gender, sexual, etc. constructs and superiority) that it takes time to change larger social structures that reinforce those beliefs. It's easy to say we should hold individuals accountable for our actions (which we absolutely should), but it's not so easy as "person X is racist and person Y is inherently evil," it's much more "this society has for countless generations normalized racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. discourse/practices and we all consume that knowledge and reproduce it whether we intend to our not and so it takes structural change to meaningfully unlearn problematic cultural values." Basically let's empathetically hold each other accountable to do better and learn and grow, framing it from a place of compassion to lift one another up, rather than dehumanize people for perpetuating what is a larger structural issue. It's like shaming someone who uses plastic straws for not being eco-friendly when corporations and militaries are producing the most pollution globally and threatening sustainability more directly; yes, there are great smaller efforts on behalf of individuals but ultimately the focus needs to be on dismantling the larger power structures that are perpetuating harm in the first place.
