Olive (Abigail Breslin) cannot contain her excitement when she hears that she has qualified for the finals of the Little Miss Sunshine competition.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When a pudgy, bespectacled seven-year-old, Olive (Abigail Breslin), voices her desire to take home the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip to ensure her a clear shot at realizing her dreams in former music video directorial team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' quirky feature debut, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette. Despite early career success as an outspoken motivational speaker, family patriarch Richard (Kinnear) continues to cling to his "Refuse to Lose" philosophy, much to the chagrin of his increasingly annoyed spouse, Sheryl (Collette). Add into the mix a Nietzsche-reading teenage son (Paul Dano) who has taken a vow of silence until he finds his fate as a fighter pilot; a horny, heroin-happy grandfather (Alan Arkin) with a penchant for creative profanity; and a suicidal genius (Carell) and Proust scholar still reeling about losing both his male lover and his MacArthur Foundation genius grant -- and the stage is set for a road trip in which sanity is sure to take the back seat.

Agreed. She is the best part, and it is demonstrated the best when Richard and Dwayne tell her to not let Olive compete in the beauty contests and she refuses and ask them to let her be who she was. If not for her Olive would never know what a waste of time beauty contests were and how willing was her family to stand by her even when the rest of the world does not.

I somewhat agree with the dad about saying "good luck". In French, there are two ways to say the same thing: "bonne chance" (straight translation) or "bon courage" ("good courage" or "heart"). I like the latter more since it places the locus of control onto the listener rather than outside forces; it is more akin to saying "stay positive", which is something that we should always do as it helps us focus on what we can control. For me, it quells anxiety more effectively than saying "good luck", which essentially means "I hope that it works out for you (but it might not)." However, the dad could have said it in a less off-putting way.

Why are so many lamps on inside the house at daytime? Nobody does that. So many scenes in movies are lit this way, and I understand it's an artistic choice, but it just looks so unreal and impractical.

It's unreal but it looks nice, and it adds to moody lighting. If you pay attention, practically ALL movies and series now are lit this way. Modern cinematographers and gaffers LOVE this, and it's become a trend.
