FILM DESCRIPTION:
Miss Mona (Dolly Parton) runs the Chicken Ranch, a brothel with a long history in a small Texas town. The locals have a good relationship with the institution, and Mona is respected in the community. The sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd (Burt Reynolds), also looks out for the Chicken Ranch due to his past with Miss Mona. However, when pious reporter Melvin Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) exposes the brothel, outside interests want it shut down, putting the governor (Charles Durning) in a tough spot.

Had to do a paper for my Texas Government class. All the professor told us was it had to have SOMETHING to do with Texas Government or Politics. Well, this was right after Burt Reynolds passed, so my Daddy was on a Burt Reynolds kick so we had watched this. That night my parents poked their heads in and ask, "How goes the studying?" I told them it was hard to focus on the details of the (SEVEN!) Texas Constitutions when I had the songs from this film stuck in my head. My dad jokingly said, "Maybe it's a sign that that's what you should do your paper on." But my Momma said, "No, seriously. Isn't it based on a true story?" So I did the research and presented it to the professor, under the thesis that the politicians of Texas had no problem with the Chicken Ranch existing until it was brought into the limelight and made them look corrupt, then it had to go ASAP. My professor was impressed and I got a 100 on the paper. 😀

Those that are married - they might not have told their wives but their wives probably know. Remember later on we meet a woman who's late husband was up there every week, said she appreciated the time she had to herself. In any case, there's no drunken brawls, no shady deals going on, every one is polite, no one is forced to go up there - the customers come of their own free will and the women who work there work there because they choose to, they weren't blackmailed, kidnapped, manipulated or in any way forced to work there.

It shows you that both had unhealthy lifestyles. Burt Reynolds was an alcoholic and addicted to the sleep drug Halcion. His sick body was of his own making and it is right that he suffered for it. Any and all alcohol permanently damages the liver and organs. Serves him right. Your liver under your care. Neglect and abuse it, then you die a painful early, inglorious death. Dolly Parton - Southern gal who ate a southern diet full of typical Southern comfort foods, like cornbread, roast pork with green beans and fried okra, and banana pudding. Parton also has a soft spot for a popular taco chain. These are carb heavy foods which set off inflammation in the gut and raise your insulin levels, overtax the pancreas, liver and gall bladder and gut lining. If she had GI tract issues, bloating, indigestion, sluggishness, low energy, etc., it all came from the rich food. All she had to do was fix the food, do fasting. She was fat too. I don't feel sorry for, or praise anyone that indulges in self-destructive behavior. It is right that they should suffer for it. It is only through pain and suffering that we change for the better. You have to be disciplined in life, not self indulgent. There is always a heavy cost for self indulgence.

The multitude of flavors she can layer into a musical phrase are just magical, especially combined with the breathy quality of her voice and the sweetness that coats it all. Every word, look, and movement just says quite plainly that she is exactly where she wants to be and doing exactly what she wants to be doing.

My granny was a huge dolly fan. I don't how old I was when I first saw this, but I was very young. Between 7-10. And I thought these women were beautiful, strong, and amazing. I want to be them. I wanted to live in a house full of beautiful women that took care of each other and did whatever they wanted. I didnt realize until my teen years that I had pulled style inspirations from it. And it wasnt until I rewatched it in my early twenties that I realized what was actually going on. And as an ace spectrum person... probably not the best idea!

It was a time when Dolly could have ran for President and won in a landslide. She was just that popular. Having previously starred in 9 to 5, this movie on top of being one of the greatest of the greats as a country singer shot her fame through the stratosphere! I still remember watching her on The Porter Wagoner Show with my grandma, but her star eventually outshined it.
