The fact that Meryl Streep broke her "no sequels" rule and made a cameo in this tells you just how important the first one is to her
@dms1131ds

Not really. Judy Cramer (the producer) did an interview where she confirmed Streep wasn’t at all interested in Mamma Mia 2 and originally turned down an offer to return. She only agreed when the story was finally written and they offered her the opportunity to come back in only two scenes (this song and the final credit song). And Streep has confirmed nothing will get her to do Mamma Mia 3, unlike Julie Walters who said she would come out of retirement for it. A shame, really.

@@dms1131dsthis is a sequel and she is here. So. I don’t understand what you’re trying to say. If she actually has a no sequels rule, she definitely and verifiably did broke that rule with this, regardless of what the reasons for it to be.

This scene is brutal. I remember seeing this in theatres and I could hear nothing but sobs and sniffles in the entire room. Unbelievably, and heartbreaking-ly beautiful. It was almost fitting that Streep does not do sequels, because it would have been an entirely different movie. The created a great story line for all the characters in lieu of Streep not fully being there, like the first one. Yes, she participated in a sequel, but not in a way where she was the main star, her younger self was. All she needed was this one scene to make her presence known. So powerful :)

when my mother died, I was crying, alone, and I asked her, wherever she was, if she would remember me or forget me. I went downstairs and turned on the TV and this movie was on right when she was outside the church and started walking inside. I had never seen the movie. I knew it was a message from her. It was too coincidental. It was my mother's message to me! I play it and sing with it to sing back to her, to sing my love to her. I miss her so much, but this event comforted me so. She is out there. All our loved ones who have passed on are out there. They have not ceased to exist.

This is an emotional masterpiece. First playing 'slipping through my fingers' in the background on the way to the church, then playing and singing this song inside the church in a duet with Donna (who at this point is dead), add in the imagery of Sophie seemingly able to see and hold hands with Donna and finally Donna leaving the church, her arms held out like angel wings, all while getting surrounded by bright light, to take her away while the doors close. It's hardly surprising why so many people cry to this scene.

This song like slipping through my fingers in the first movie always has me in tears. I found out a few years ago that I’m terminally ill, and will be leaving two beautiful girls (one just in early teens, one below 10) these songs just cover exactly how I feel about them, adore them, and want the best for them. The amazing delivery by all the cast, makes you forget that most are not real singers. Not having Meryl in second movie just felt wrong, as she has such presence on screen, but this scene just finished the movie off, and I doubt anyone could watch it the first time, without tears in their eyes.

I didn't see this in the theatre, and I think I'm glad. I bought the Blu-ray and sat down to watch it, not knowing the new story. It got to this scene and I completely lost it. I was a 58 year-old man and had lost my mom a couple of weeks before I saw this. It never occurred to me that a Mamma Mia movie would make me cry. I fell apart, gulping, blubbering. I'm glad it was at home so I could just FEEL and nobody would stare. Yes, men cry, too. I dearly miss my mom.

No, here, here's where we belong I see a road ahead I never thought I would dare to tread Like an image passing by, my love, my life In the mirror of your eyes, my love, my life I can see it all so clearly All I love so dearly Images passing by Like reflections of your mind, my love, my life Are the words I try to find, my love, my life But I know I don't possess you With all my heart, God bless you You will be my love and my life You're my one and only I held you close to me Felt your heartbeat and I thought I am free Oh, yes and as one are we In the now and beyond Nothing and no one can break this bond Like an image passing by, my love, my life In the mirror of your eyes, my love, my life I can see it all so clearly All I love so dearly Images passing by Like reflections of your mind, my love, my life Are the words I try to find, my love, my life But I know I don't possess you With all my heart, God bless you You are still my love and my life Yes, I know don't possess you With all my heart, God bless you You are still my love and my life You're my one and only..♥️❤️

"Yes I know I don't possess you." That's the line that gets me. Knowing that you cant stay with your loved one or that part of loving them is being willing to let them go. One to life. The other to death. That you can love your child with all your being but when it comes time to release them you must know you dont possess them, and yet they are still yours forever.

My grandma passed away when my mom was a teenager. I've been afraid of the same thing happening to me ever since I heard about it... 2 weeks ago my mom suffered a stroke. I didn't allow myself to cry, I stood by her side in the bed of the hospital, trying to cheer her up. Now it seems that she's doing better and that she'll recover, but I still had this walls surrounding my heart that didn't allow me to grief, so I came here, I knew this song would connect me to my feelings: she's the most important person of my life, and I've been terrified this whole time. I finally cried

when I met that music teacher, I was a little girl thirteen years old! For me, she became something more than a simple teacher!!! She taught me not to be afraid, to believe in myself, to strive for my goals!! She is the first person that comes to my mind when I want to talk about something and I know that when I am not well she will give me an advice and a hug!!! She taught me expression through music and made me want to follow her profession too!! She became for me my role model, my strength and my second mom!! Without her I wouldn't be the person I am now!!! I can't express everything I feel for her in words, so I just tell her that I love her very much!! every time I tell her that I love her, I mean it more and more!!! She is my love and my life!!! She is my one and only!!!!! With all my heart god bless her !!!!🙏🏻💖I cry every time I hear this song !!!🥺🥹❤️❤️💕🎵🎵

My mom died in January 2012, i was only 10. I'm turning 22 in less than 6 weeks. Even in therapy i never felt any closure with my mom. My stepmom has been a mother figure since, though my parents split and dad remarried when i was young. Although i can imagine everyone would find this song emotional, I believe those who've lost their close family member (especially mother, grandma, daughter, etc) would feel it hit different, with it being even more emotional. I can literally imagine singing this to my future children when theyre young and when i pass away, in spirit More to add: I saw this movie when i was 16 and i had never seen the first till shortly after i saw this one, so i didnt understand the parallels. I barely understood this scene. But now as a young adult, i can understand it better regardless of whether ive ever seen this movie. I cry like a baby every time except when i first saw MM2

Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep are really amazing in that scene. They don't need to said a word, you read it all in their expressions, that's amazing! I love this scene, paticulary when Sophie sees her mom and without saying anything you can see what she's thinking "Mom? It's you? It's realIy you. I miss you." And when Donna leaves...well I can't be the only one who cried. They both deserve an Oscar just for this scene.
