You're absolutely right however I'm not sure if this applies in Rocky's case because his manager and trainer Mickey had been rigging every single fight since Creed so that Rocky could fight a has-been and not get hurt as Mickey was so afraid of when he took a beating from Creed. And while yes Rocky definitely got caught up in his hubris it was a false humorous because he was beating Fighters far below his rank. However Rocky himself did not know this he thought he was fighting The Best of the Best. It seems as though as though his manager Mickey was actually keeping Rocky back out of fear of Rocky being hurt and so I can't really place blame on Rocky as though it's his fault for becoming cocky although he certainly did however truthfully had he went through 10 fights at the rank of the fight he did with Apollo Creed he would be a different Rocky and maybe Mickey would be right he might not even be alive

The thing is, he has the fight with Clubber then the fight with Drago. Both guys were killers like Mick said, and Rocky proceeds to get brain damage and lose all of his wealth. Mick had it pegged perfectly. He got Rocky the belt, wealth, and kept him safe and healthy for a lifetime going forward. Instead, Rocky took pride and lost everything as a result.

Rocky spent the first 30 years+ of his life living below the poverty line living a life every bit as tough as Clubber's. He spent 3 years from about the age of 32 to 35 in decadence. Victory never defeated Rock, he just had a couple of bad rounds is all.

Burgess Meredith nailed this role, one of his best, powerful, and a very different type of character from the meek characters he played in several Twilight zone episodes. A great actor is someone who can play a wide range of different characters. Dustin Hoffman's another example, he's played from autistic savant to tough and assertive to a romantic player.

I look at the first three Rocky movies as a good trilogy. First one he goes the distance and proves to himself he isn't some bum from Philadelphia. Second one, he proves he's championship material. Finally, in the third, is a success but soon loses his edge , forgets where it came from. Regains that fighting spirit lost to complacency and proves when he's knocked down, he can get back up.

in creed 2, Adonis came to Rocky telling him he wants to fight Viktor Drago. Rocky told him "You have everything to lose, he has nothing to lose. A fighter that has nothing to lose is the most dangerous fighter". That line brought me back to this movie. Clubber had nothing to lose and Rocky had everything to lose. And when he lost that fight, Rock basically lost almost everything. His will to fight, he went into a depression, and he lost his coach and friend Mick.

I always had a hard time calling this handpicking. Mickey was picking excellent fighters, he was just making sure that they weren’t psychopaths. Mickey knew that Apollo really wanted to hurt Rocky, he also knew that Rocky would end up permanently disabled if he kept fighting guys who wanted to hurt Rocky to the point of ending his career. Mickey was choosing fighters that wouldn’t purposefully hurt Rocky.
@tylergagnon1613

@@sha11235That’s why I never considered it handpicking. I just seen it as Mickey choosing fighters based off of their personality. Apollo really wanted to hurt Rocky and end his career. Mickey knew that if he kept facing people like that, Rocky would end up permanently disabled. I honestly don’t even think Mickey wanted Rocky to fight since the first movie. Mick just stuck around with Rocky, because he knew he was the only one that would be able to keep Rocky safe.

The parallels of the Rocky movies to Stallone's real life rise and fall and rise again are amazing. Rocky, he's a nobody who gets a shot of a lifetime that changes everything. Rocky II, he's out to prove the amazing success was not a fluke. Rocky III, the trappings of success and fame literally start to change him. Hell, even Sly's physical appearance is different. Rocky IV is just excess, with all pretense of the underdog heart of the original replaced with a big expensive blockbuster look and feel. Rocky V is the fall from grace. Sly had made flops like Over The Top and Tango and Cash and went back to the well once too often in an artificial attempt to put the heart back in a dying franchise. Then you get Rocky Balboa, a movie that is everything Rocky V should've been. Plus time dulls perceptions and people love a great comeback. Creed and Creed II are Sly as the older, wiser sage that no longer has to be the lead guy but we all know and love his presence. What an enduring legacy to have left.

He's the burned out Veteran vet with PTSD who shoots a few cops gets thrown in prison, gets called back into a top secret black ops mission despite being mentally unstable, then he joins the Mujahedin (many of which later joined the Taleban and Al Qaeda) to win the Cold War by himself, then goes to some rural hellhole in Burma to fight some comically rotten thugs while being a senior citizen. Last but not least he has retired somehow in New Mexico, has a family and then deals with the Mexican drug cartels. By talking to them first and asking them nicely no less... If Stallone was astute he'd just leave the character after First Blood.

This is a remarkable idea. I bet Sylvester would love the idea as well. How he fought and his opponent had a needle inside te glove. How he knocked Guinny Russell out of the ring in 1923. Had no manager. About the fight with "Sailor" Mike and that letter he got. And how he ended up owning the gym. And then a young Rocky enters a gym who is a street bully etc. And the rest is a history. There is a true story there already. His life really could be a remarkable story if written by Silvester!!

It could have been a way better, way deeper film with just a few changes, although that would have meant a whole bunch of editing to try and get the pacing right and y'know, it's never as simple as just inserting extra scenes. As far as I know, they had many of the scenes that I'm talking about though, that could have made it better, they had been acted out and filmed. These were things like more backstory on Clubber, him being jealous of Balboa's popularity despite not putting in the same effort. The movie was TRYING to tell the viewer this was what was happening but that final piece of the puzzle wasn't there. Clubber had no trainers in camp with him which was silly. Clubber would have felt as a black man that he was being held back and since Balboa was training in a gym with almost entirely african americans, this SHOULD have caused some sort of friction or tension in his gym, perhaps some questioning why the hell Creed was training this guy, but it was only ever hinted at very, very lightly. To the point where if you claim to see the hint, you can easily and understandably be accused of making it up. This stuff should have been made more clear. It's stuff which could have replaced some of the training montage stuff, or simply added in some other way, but as already said before, it's never quite as simple is just adding in a scene or replacing one scene with another. There's a lot to consider when inserting scenes. Great film, though. Rocky has always been great value.

It's a shame the Micky character was killed off. If he thought Clubber was a killer, what'd he say about Drago? Don't even bother, this guy is not a man he's a freak of nature? He probably wouldn't have a high opinion of Tommy Gunn or Mason Dixon either. His absence in the later Rocky movies is tragic but does allow for good speculation.

Burgess Meredith played the angry-Jewish-ex-fighter-now-grumpy-old-trainer to perfection. The other sequels were alright; some better than others, but this one really was the fitting end to a trilogy. The trainer and father figure dies. The hero feels discouraged and alone. The rival becomes his new trainer and best friend.

True and it was this moment (not Mickeys death) that took the eye of the tiger out of him and cause him to lose his edge, and Apollo capitalizes on that during their first meeting. He made a comment of Mickeys death having him all torn up inside, but said the truth was he has lost his edge before that. And it was this scene here.
