In Nicolas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel The Witches, a young boy is vacationing at the seaside with his grandmother when he discovers that the hotel he is staying at is hosting a convention of witches. Eavesdropping on the witches, he learns that the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) has devised a plan to turn all of the children in England into mice. The same yellow dress woman goes under the table but at the next shot at 1:20, she is seen standing until Luke exposes himself by then she could have easily have caught him without having to go under the table. When Luke pushes the table she is least affected but still doesn't catch Luke and it doesn't look like she was helping other witches get to their feet. So she could have easily have caught Bruno between 2:00 onwards.

To them, they smell absolutely disgusting 🤮. For instance, when Bruno was walking in between the witches they cover their noses, acting as if he stinks.

(to me) this movie would be better. if they had college jocks in this. (witches can’t stand the smell of jock sweat) they try to eliminate them with the magic formula. bruno is a frat boy. (thinks he is getting cash) burps then shrinks into a mouse. (see his feet transform in his berkinstocks) as the maid witch picks up his clothes from the stage. the insoles of bruno’s berks are sooo black. (sweating drastically in his berks while on stage) As for Luke he is a newly track and field student. (removed his shoes while the presentation was going on) now witches smell Luke’s socks and shoes.

Yeah that's what I thought considering Luke's grandma did point out to Luke in the beginning when she told her storie that the cleaner you are the more a witch could smell you...but haven't said that maybe he did take her advise after and had skipped having bath/shower everyday. That's my guess anyway I could be wrong.

It the book it says that he didn't take a bath for a long time (since they arrived, almost a week) so that's why they didn't smell him :) this is the reason why I didn't want to take baths as a child haha

@80s G.R.L 17 I wondered that too as to why none of them smelled him. I can only guess that witch at 0:02 smelled him because she came close to the spot where he was hiding and when she told everyone at the end that she smells dogs droppings, the other witches then started to focus more on their noses being able to smell him then. However, the Grand High Witch and her secretary should have been able to smell him being the closest ones to him the whole time.

@@cazgoldie813 That's true that Helga said that the cleaner a child is a more a witch could smell a child. Plus, Helga did say that if a child is dirty the witch could smell the dirt on him/her. So if Luke hasn't taken a shower in a long time, he must be dirty so they probably would have smelled the dirt on him.
