Hello John, Another excellent review of a modern day masterpiece, I didn't see this in widescreen until the mid nineties VHS Fox widescreen collection. The resolution was appalling! Just going back to Alien 3, what drives me up the wall about this film, is that when it was released at the cinema, myself and countless others were very disappointed. Fast forward 10 years after Fincher had made Seven, Fight club, etc and everyone was saying it didn't seem quite as bad. The extended directors cut is better, but it's still a long way off Alien and Aliens. Rant over!
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
The extended cut has been recommended to me by a few people so I will take a look sometime. Somehow I doubt I'll still be able to get past the downbeat tone of the film, particularly after the struggle the survivors went through towards the end of Aliens to then be killed off during the opening titles of Alien 3. That was not the best start. But I do think Fincher is a top class director even if Alien 3 was not the best of starts. Not entirely his fault though. John.

The 4K of Alien is immediately, perceptibly better than the THX Blu-ray Adrian like you, I have so many copies of this film it does get a bit tiresome picking up a new video version every few years. @@moviecollector5920 Sadly I think the newer Alien films display a problem that Ridley Scott has in either picking scriptwriters or meddling too much in what they write. It seems like out of all his films of the last decade the best ones were already written before he came on board as director. The Martian especially shows just how well Scott can still perform with a ready to go script. Knowing this I would say for god sake don't let him near any future films until the script is done.

Thank you for sharing you'r cinema experiences with us and how this relates to the 35mm release. You clearly put a lot of effort into your review and have a huge passion for quality cinema. Much respect!
@moviecollector59202 жыл бұрын
The reason I started this channel was because I couldn't find anyone reviewing video discs who had any or much knowledge of film. I certainly couldn't find anyone who had 35mm projection capabilities. If Aliens ever comes out at a 4K UHD disc it will be a good excuse to go through this whole process again. I don't have it on 35mm but I have two copies on Super 8 and I also have Alien Resurrection on 35mm. I've never seen the fourth film on anything other than film and it looks wonderful which I'm told it doesn't on any video releases up to now. Maybe a 4K will restore how impressive that film looked in 1997. John.

Thank you for going a little bit about John Hurt, and sharing that story. Keeping his memory alive and remembering his many performances is just something all us fans have to do. He became a legend on Alien but he was a real talent on so many other things.

I don't think younger audiences realize how incredible experience it was going to a good cinema (pre multi-plex) and seeing a spectacular film like "Alien" on those huge screens, the 20th Century Fox logo projected onto the slowly opening curtains finally drawing and enveloping one into another world. Thank you for this wonderful, meticulous review. What wonderful memories it brought back. Michael - South Africa.

Fantastic video again John. I absolutely share your passion for this film. I first saw it on the big screen as a 1st year undergraduate in London back in 1979/80 and promptly went out and bought as much literature on the film that I could find at the time. Like you, I own many versions of the film as well as various models of the Alien (boys and their toys, I know) and it certainly rates in my Top Five films of all time. I am also a great John Hurt fan - I highly rated him in The Elephant Man, Midnight Express and his portrayal of Stephen Ward in Scandal. Extremely envious of your meeting him - what a great memory for you. :-)

I think we're two of a kind Dave. There's just somethiing about this film that has had an effect on so many of us. If it came out today it wouldn't be the same but so many films were influenced by this one I wonder if we'd have ever seen another film like it anyway. John.

Another film that looks fantastic in 4K is Akira written and directed by Katsuhiro otomo but get the newer version, the company really screwed up forgot HDR. I believe it was shot on 70mm and the blu ray I got is incredible and has soo much color it just pops off the screen.
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
Never seen that one Jacob so that's another one to put on the list. If it was shot on 65mm/70mm then you're right and that's why it looks fantastic on Blu-ray. I want to finally get around to watching a recent Blu-ray purchase of the 1960's 'Grand Prix' which after a sneak peek is also going to be among the best quality films on disc. That one was issued to Cinerama theatres at the time so that probably tells us all we need to know. John.

I've been preparing my latest 35mm projector for a screening of the film again and today I ran a reel of Star Trek X which I'll run again to make sure all is well with everything. Then I might just stick on the opening reel of Alien and see how I get on with that. The Dolby Digital decoding from the new projector into the Dolby CP500 processor has been causing some issues but no issues today with Star Trek X. I'm hopeful the digital track on Alien is okay all the way through as I've never had the equipment for Dolby Digital before. The Dolby Stereo 4 track is excellent though so it won't be the end of the world. Glad you enjoyed this video. I made it about three and a half years ago but it doesn't feel like that long. My channel exploded shortly after it was uploaded and for a while I couldn't work out what had happened but thankfully it all settled down again otherwise I'd have spent all day, everyday at the keyboard. A classic masterpiece in the sci-fi horror genre by Ridley Scott that has inspired so many other films. It's so cool that you have this on film John. Wonderful review as usual. I bought Alien in 4K on sale at amazon.ca for $15 CAD. I first saw this film when I was 14 in a downtown movie theater shortly after it came out. We were sitting in the third row as there were almost no seats left. A guy in the row just in front of us was tripping under the influence of some non-alcoholic substance. He had obviously already seen the movie on a previous occasion as he was reacting ahead of time on the upcoming events by yelling loudly what was to going to unfold. Eventually, the cinema ushers came to get him and escorted him out of the movie theater, thank you. What a memorable movie night that had been... priceless memories.

I never said in my initial comment what a fan I am of Alien. I still remember seeing it the first time; must have been 1980, one village over in a small, rickety old cinema and being scared out of my wits! This will be one of, if not THE first film I see on my forthcoming 4k tv; hopefully later this year. This or Blade Runner; I have them both on 4k, waiting for that day.. I sometimes start the film, and watch the credits with the fabulous score, the pan through the ship, the rogue message and the crew waking with the score swirling into a beautiful major key; it's all I need to get the feel of the film filling me up again. Another superb review, and I loved the walkthrough of your different versions of the film and memorabilia; thank you! Your videos are without a doubt, the best online.

Good morning John. Alien too is one of my very, very favorite films but I've seen it so many times down through the decades that I've thought I might not see it again before I die. Less than a year ago I got my very first blu ray player, a 4k, and have gradually built up a few hd and uhd blu rays. Well, I just watched this video review and you've inspired me to watch the movie again, especially since I'll finally be able to watch it in a superior format as I've only seen it on vhs and streaming.

It's a darned fine disc too Pete and compared really well to my 35mm general release print. I did watch Alien a few times on a VHS recording before the complete film was released on Super 8 but apart from that I've only ever seen it on film until taking a look at the 4K disc. It is like having a film without actually having the physical print. It doesn't quite hold the same magic as running a film print but that won't mean so much to most, just us longtime film lovers and collectors of real film prints over the past five decades or so. Thank you Conall. I haven't seen Alien Romulus but I would have made the effort if I still lived in the West End of London. Quite a sad state of affairs really but you're the second person today to tell me they enjoyed it and that the special effects are traditional. That's all good to know. I have to say though that the best the Aliens ever looked was in Alien Resurrection which used both practical effects and computer generated. I'm not averse to CGI I just don't much like its overuse. It's great to hear someone speak so passionately about movies near and dear to me!! Thanks!

I think I've said this before Gilbert, but if not I'll say it again - I think you and I have a similar taste in films. I put a lot of time into this Alien video but it was a genuine surprise that things started happening on my channel immediately afterwards. It drew in the 2001 A Space Odyssey fans and that resulted in about 120,000 extra views on my 2001 video in about a week. I spent a few days on here permanently responding to comments as a result and it was difficult to keep up. Things have quietened down since then and are just about at a manageable level now. It's been a lot of fun. John.

This has to b the most indepth review I have ever seen for Alien. Probably the greatest sci-fi horror movie ever made. Which is ironic because I think Aliens is probably the greatest action horror movie ever made. Alien 3 is not worth talking about but unfortunately I heard there was a lot of studio interference on that and that's exactly what we get when that happens. Alien Resurrection was a marked improvement over 3 but not by much in my opinion. Prometheus is a wonderful movie even though he did things in it that leave it open to alot of questions and unfortunately Alien Covent didn't answer them. Hopefully we'll get a third Prometheus movie and come full circle. But only time will tell.

Well I think we need a Euphoria Pitures review of Alien next. And if Aliens appears in 4K then we both need to ensure we get something out on that soon after release because it's almost as popular as the orignal film. I need to see the revised cut of Alien 3 you mentioned a few videos back Keith because I really didn't like the film at all. I though Resurretion was great though. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I finally see a kindred spirit.....Alien : Resurrection wasn't bad at all, been saying that for years. Granted, it's not close to the 1st and the 2nd movie, but way better than the highly disappointing 3rd movie. I did rewatch the 3rd somewhere last year.....I finally bought it cheap to have a complete series....I'm a completist, which is a good and bad thing at the same time. And it was a bit better after all these years.....I may be growing soft at an older age, but yeah, my hate has diminished somewhat. But by no means does it come close to 1 and 2....or 4.

@@despayre3914 Alien 3 had flaws right from the opening credits and there was no way back from that. It did achieve something though because it got even worse as it went along. But having said that, I haven't seen the film since opening night in 1992 so I expect I will be less disappointed with it when I do finally see it again. Might be fun to go through all the flaws and then list the positives... and hope there are actually some positives! John.

Another great video John. The first time I saw Alien was on a pan and scan VHS and was very disappointed. It wasn't until I saw the laserdisc with the film in the proper aspect ratio that it really impressed me. I enjoying see the Super 8 versions of films in your collection. How much did the full length version cost? What's your opinion on Aliens? Keep em coming John.

What's your opinion of Aliens on home video?
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
Well, I purchased that Super 8 as soon as it came out but such was the demand my copy came from the second print run and cost £299. I got a second-hand copy later on which I made up from odd reels and I think that totalled about £150. Today you'd probably be looking at up to a grand! Maybe more. Aliens is another of my favourite films. It might even be number 2 to Alien but perhaps The Terminator is in that spot. I could probably name ten or twenty films that are my favourites in reality. John.

I haven't seen the Blu-ray Steve but I'm sure that's about as good as it gets. I saw Aliens at the Odeon Leicester Square three times so you can see that I was rather impressed with it on the big screen. I enjoyed the original VHS release but it lacked something. Then I got it on Super 8 and I've only ever seen it on a big screen from then on. Not particularly good Super 8 quality but looked close enough to the 35mm in miniature on our roll down ten foot wide screen. I re-recorded the sound from the laser disc so it was even better than the excellent sound it came with originally. John.

Finally upgraded my Sony SXRD to 4K and this was my first watch. Absolutely loved it and my all time favourite film. A point of trivia, my uncle saw this in the cinema during its first theatre run and said the cocoon scene was in the film. Seems it may have been removed for continuity reasons. Also said the audience was in complete shock and had never experienced anything like it. A piece of cinematic history.
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
It would be interesting to hear from anyone else who saw the cocoon sequence because that can only have been a test or preview audience. I need to go through the box set LaserDisc again because my recollection is the sequence was never completed and never cut together. It was fudged together for the so called Director's Cut but it simply didn't work. It also upset the pacing leading up to the climactic explosion. Alien isn't the best 4K out there but it's certainly a good one. John.

Given my history and love of the film though I had to do my best to make it absolutely spot on otherwise I would always have regretted it. Love seeing/hearing your passion for this film, John, as well as all the great info on the various versions including the super 8 edit reel. So cool. I last saw Alien on TV years ago as a kid. I've been meaning to revisit it and came close to getting it on 4K earlier this year. Now that it's back to the front of my mind, I'll have to grab it soon! Thanks for sharing your John Hurt story too, that's a great memory to have. Looking forward to your next video! - Andrew (PS. I did get a cheap 1080p projector off Amazon and have been having tons of fun blasting a 150'' image on my wall. It's not the greatest picture quality you can get, but playing scenes from The Shining, 2001, Joker, Le Mans 66' - or Ford Vs Ferrari as it's known here - , it just feels so cinematic and the scale really makes the films feel powerful as they should! I'm hooked.

Modern cheapo video projectors are unbelievable quality for what they cost. And with some of the Blu-ray discs being so good there just isn't a lot of difference between a big screen showing at home rather than a modern day multiplex. 'Ford vs. Ferrari' is an exceptional release and one of the best image quality 4K's but I took a look at the Blu-ray and that was just as sharp but just didn't have HDR which is all that seems to make the difference on smaller screens. John.
@GuitarGuy50000000003 жыл бұрын
@@moviecollector5920 Thanks for helping to validate my purchase! Haha. I can see what you mean. My sense was that I'd have to pay a lot more than I did to get that significant jump in quality. I agree, it's similar quality to some of the more basic multiplex theaters I've been to. Agree that the 4K and BD of Ford v. Ferrari are nearly identical aside from some subtle HDR. Keep up the great videos!
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarGuy5000000000 It will be interesting to see how you perceive the difference when you do finally get a 4K projector. We may find the only perceptible improvement is HDR.

@@moviecollector5920 I'm really curious. I recently have watched so many projector reviews and I feel like I can sense that the contrast and sharpness is definitely significantly better on the 4k Optomas, Epsons...etc. My family marveled at how clear they thought the picture was, but I definitely see it as a little soft and flat. Good enough for what it is and for family fun, but I'm pretty sure I'll appreciate the jump. Who knows, with the costs of entry getting lower and lower, they may have cheapo 4K projectors soon!
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarGuy5000000000 Undoubtedly. But our Optoma UHD550X was only £1500 three years ago so with the cheapest they do now being under £1,000 I'm glad we made our purchase when we did. The difference between the £1500 UHD550X and the £3,000 UHD650 did not seem to be noticeable. The demonstration room I saw the UHD650 in was not ideal and I soon had the UHD550 setup at home to look better than the UHD650 had appeared in the demonstration. It helps when you've got black velvet masking around the projected image though so that's a tip worth carrying out. Any black mask makes a difference (it fools the human eye into thinking the contrast of the projected image is higher than it really is) but velvet absobs spillover light so more advantageous - and the deeper the black the better it works.

New Subscriber here from Scotland, and like a couple of posters have said, a bit annoyed you were not recommended earlier. You are doing a lot right here John, the main difference to a lot of other channels which review discs is you are honest. Far too many channels proclaim the latest release to be "The best ever" and you wonder at times if there is a back hander going on. Elliot at "Boutique Blu rays" is far more honest also, and recently pointed out some serious flaws with the Lord of the Rings 4k releases, which again many reviewers had said was "The best ever". The scene with the mummified pilot is also one of my favourites in all of cinema history. I remember feeling it to be truly "Alien" and I loved the fact that its origins were left to the imagination....until, it was revealed to be a large blue, bald bloke. Damn it Hollywood. Will they ever grasp the concept that sometimes less is so, so much more. One of the true classics, and one of two films of the top of my head while writing that actually felt that it was filmed in Outer space (2001, being the other). Keep up the great work, you seem like a really decent human being who is doing this because you adore cinema. The subscription base will grow and grow, guaranteed. Hoping for reviews on Jaws and both Blade Runners at some point but then its your channel, not mine. Stay safe my good man.
