I love the scene where Tom Cruise’s character turns up the music and tells Abbey the truth about their predicament. Awesome use of music and camera direction. What a film. Paced brilliantly, very intriguing and gene Hackman is awesome. Love the ending too -

John, excellent review as always. Last time I watched this was on VHS many years ago. I really liked the part after the review where we get to learn about your recent purchases and talk about TENET a bit. I loved it my first time seeing it. I did cave and turn on the subtitles which made it a lot more enjoyable. I was trying to be all stoic and listen as the sound designer intended but ended up having a much better experience once I turned the subtitles on.

So many people have told me they had trouble discerning the dialogue in TENET but I've never had that problem either here or at the BFI IMAX. All a bit odd. Maybe when the breathers are on it's intentionally muffled but it's superfluous dialogue during those periods as it's obvious what is happeniing. John.
@MyFireVideos

@moviecollector5920 I think you are 100% correct. The sound mixing of the movie intentionally drowns out superfluous dialog and lets the picture tell the story (that being said, I did like to see what they were saying anyway).This DTS HD MA 5.1 is the most powerful track I've ever heard at home.

@@MyFireVideos Oh yes, the whole sound stage on TENET is so perfect. It matches the perfect imagery but none of it is a patch on what I saw and heard at the BFI IMAX. That screening really was too much for a mere mortal to fully take in. I found myself just looking at it rather than watching it. The bangs and explosions gave the appearance of coming from the exactly place on the screen where they were and even though it was undoubtedly loud, it was just right. It's a rare thing for cinema to achieve that any longer. I remember when digital sound first came in and all the cinemas turned the volume right up and ruined their speakers, including The Empire, Leicester Square which I consider to have been the best cinema in the world... not that I'd been in them all but I've been in one heck of a lot. John.

Hi John, great review as always! quick comment before I have to go do something, It's interesting that you mention the 4K disc of tenet getting staggered during certain parts of the film. I found out recently that my 4K disc of Interstellar starts to stagger when Cooper drives off to go to space (possibly one of the biggest parts of the film) and the sound and image cut out. This is rather interesting since I thought it was my player (which I had spent quite the pretty penny on) but I suppose it isn't since you are receiving the issue as well with your copy of Tenet. Hope this problem is resolved, I may even send an email to Warner Bros about their 4K discs staggering. Also, Oppenheimer opening in about 2 weeks, very excited to see it in its 1570 glory in Melbourne, same with you and the BFI. Cheers! Clark

I've still got to sort out tickets for OPPENHEIMER Clark. Must get onto that today but I never seem to get any time now. I think the problem with 4K discs is that the information is so tiny that the slightest flaw in the silver layer can cause the laser to exacerbate it and after it's been through it once a deterioration sets in. I have nothing other than my thought processes to back this up but TENET is the fourth disc I've found this problem with. They all played flawlessly the first time through so it could be that my players are ageing and therefore the lasers are no longer as efficient as they once were and any minor imperfections are now causing the issue. You'd better keep a lookout for a bargain copy of INTERSTELLAR just in case I'm right because it's a right pain to have to skip over damaged sections of a disc. John.

Pollack's filmography deserves a retrospective, many great films as The Firm, which has all the good elements to be considered one of his best. Cruise is always a secure value, and if you add a legend like Gene Hackman.... no words. As usual, we will not see this 4K edition around Spain, shame after shame. Great as always, John.

It's a great cast. I expect everyone wanted to appear in it with Sydney Pollack directing and Tom Cruise as the star. Once they started signing up I expect actors and actresses all over Hollywood were hassling their agent to get them onto the production. As for it not being available in Spain (like so many 4K releases) I suppose there are too few disc collectors left in the country now. I'll have to see if I can find out how well disc sales are doing here because others have suggested sales are slowing. Not sure I believe that because it's not like the titles have been so good this year so far. John.

@@moviecollector5920 It's true that the movie collector market is on a low point during the last three or four years. The impact of Netflix, Disney, HBO or Amazon Prime has been very negative for the physical format sales, but I can't understand why such recent great films like Tár, Nope, The Fabelmans, etc. didn't get a 4K edition here and, at the same time, absolutely disappointing films like Thor Love and Thunder and Wakanda Forever (with four different editions, including two steelbooks!!!) are released. The companies policy seems a kind of erratic, if not a mystery.

Some great bargains. I think u’ll enjoy the shape of water and definitely Inception on repeat viewing if u like Tenet so much! As for the firm, I seen it about 20-odd years ago on vhs or dvd, i can’t remember! I quite enjoyed it. Morning Andy. That poxy steelbook will be on my mind forever now so if I do see it again I'll have to invest the money. It may have only been a Blu-ray though so it won't provide a further spare in case the other 4K discs go the same way as my first. The funny thing is that that first disc had a bit of a staggering issue on the menu and then it's gradually got worse and worse as though the heat from the laser has been breaking up the silver layer in some way. I suspect there was a flaw in the manufacture of this particular disc and the laser has finished it off. It's the fourth 4K disc I've found that has gone down. Because I didn't think there was much to say about THE FIRM I thought I'd waffle on a little about a few other things so in the end the video ended up being much longer than I expected. Still, it was fun to do and that's how this KZbin malarkey should be. John.

It was a pretty big film here in the states I forgotten how great the cast was, and was surprised because I was sure that Anthony LaPaglia was the heavy in this film, but I was mistaken he was in the client another John Grissom film. Anthony is in one of my all-time favorite, hidden gem films. It stars him and Danny Aiello it’s called 29th St. (1991) it’s a wonderful film and if you haven’t seen it, please put it on your list. Just up the road I got three Blu-rays for £1 and one of those was a steelbook which you'll see on the shelf behind me at the top. It's Jack Reacher and it's a beauty. My favourite Grisham adaptation and another example of how truly great the summer blockbuster season of 1993 truly was. I mean Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, Cliffhanger AND The Firm! A nice selection. Streamed it in 4K off Apple with Dolby Vision and it is in face pretty vivid in colour with nice grain that makes it feel like you are watching celluloid. Yes I know it’s a stream, but £2.99 vs £19.99 for a not spectacular release? As for Tenet, I saw on its first afternoon showing at the BFI IMAX and I was underwhelmed, it looks great and honestly give Nolan the directors job for Bond 26, but overall it was underwhelming. Thank heaven for subtitles for discs. Also regarding what was wrong with the Tenet 4K disc, has that happened to you often whilst viewing discs?
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Жыл бұрын
I've had four 4K discs go down with the same problem so far but I don't think many people refer back to them like I do as they don't have to check quality of new releases against previous releases so that's why I'm finding them. It's a shame you didn't understand TENET but it's strange that you had trouble understanding the dialogue. Quite a few people have reported the same thing but I have not had the problem either at home or at the BFI IMAX. I can't explain that one. It's quite possibly one of the most ambitious films ever made but it is far too complicated for most people. I tend to see that as a challenge now I'm older so I'm hoping the same is now true of INCEPTION which I thought was just ridiculous when I first saw it. Give TENET another try in 20 years and you may see it as I do. For sure it is the most impressive image quality I've ever seen in a cinema and possibly the best 4K disc quality too. Murder on the Orient Express may challenge that on the disc market though. John.
@spaceodds1985
@spaceodds1985 Жыл бұрын
@@moviecollector5920 I never found Inception ridiculous. In fact I thought it was the antidote to The Matrix. Tenet is ambitious, but I couldn’t understand the dialogue and IMO Nolan is essentially taking the piss. As for the best 4K disc, IMO the best I’ve seen, from the top of my head are Red Heat and Apocalypse Now from Studiocanal, Ronin from Kino Lorber, Mask of Zorro from Sony to name a few.
@moviecollector5920

@@spaceodds1985 I haven't seen all of those discs but they were all 35mm shoots so that's confirmation they're not in the same league. TENET is genuine IMAX as you know so that's game over in that regard. I think some 70mm films will rival it but it should only be another IMAX film that stands a chance of being better. Some may think DUNKIRK pips it. The bigger the screen the easier it is to see the difference. 35mm can look very good on a huge IMAX screen but no comparison to the real McCoy and these things shrink down to the 4K discs in much the same way. I do like getting the occasional special edition 4K and Blu-ray release with a little booklet and other bits and pieces but I never seem to do anything with them except stick them on the shelf. Getting a proper book about a film I love is much more preferable and that TENET book is a beauty. I didn't show the actual hard cover inside the dust jacket but it's brilliant white with TENET in black and that's it. Rather stylish. I still need to get that Aliens 'Making Of' book but I do have one or two older ones already so I don't think I'll learn anything new, I just love the film and can't resist any book available that might tell me anything about it. Hey John It's amazing that films of this type would sell out so much back in the day. You'd be lucky to get that now. So this will be the kind of title where people say Paramount have done a bad job. So many factors come in to play, they can't keep going buy modern film looks and the classics that went for fine detail. When I look at these films, I take into account what the film stock might have yielded, what lenses might have been used and the ore all look the director might have gone for and I except what I see. 4K's are only really bad if there are authoring issues visible. Like Pirates of the Caribbean and Studio Canal's The Fog. I must get my video done about them "awful quality 4K's " Trev

I have THE FOG on Super 8 Trev and it's dark, very dark. So that may be an indication that the original film was very dark if that is one of the cited issues with the 4K. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with THE FIRM on 4K but it's variable in how film grain is displayed across my two systems. I'm not sure I'd like to watch it on my telly anyway as I don't watch movies on the telly and haven't for so long that I can't imagine I'll ever have to again. But the look of the grain in places when I was scanning through it looked as though something had gone wrong. On the video projector it wasn't displaying in the same way so it could be an incompatibility through the telly. By the way, did you receive a Triumph DVD from me? If not then someone's knicked it as we sent it two days after we spoke. John.

@@moviecollector5920 There are actually video errors present on the Fog 4K. I'll be getting the Shout Factory SKU as it's visibly a better transfer. Yes I got the DVD. Sorry I didn't let you know. It does appear the difference between TV's displaying these 4K's and our projectors could be one of the reasons some viewers don't like how they look. The image is too small and doesn't open up fully if that makes sense. We've gone from a 2K image on 50" screens to an image 4 times the size and people are still watching on similar size screens. Putting a DVD on a 14" TV looked better than a bigger screen due to low resolution. I think it's the opposite to what is naturally a massive image not displaying so well on what is essentially a tiny screen. We got by far the best set up and our screens are small compared to cinemas. Trev

Morning Dave. I think many of us can get a little obsessive over items we treasure and feel terrible if we damage them in any way. I'm worst with any treasured Super 8 films, particularly the features. Mind you, they're so valuable now it's not like I'd ever be able to replace them even if I could track down a second copy any longer. I do have second copies of Star Wars, Alien and Aliens just in case I ever bugger up the originals so how's that for being a little too obsessive. I've just been given a 4K video copy of the original Star Wars too and it looks fabulous but nothing will ever supplant having it on Super 8 even if it's not exactly Super 8 at it's best ever quality. The Firm is a very good film. I didn't think it would be a repeatable film but now I'm not so sure. Maybe I should have invested in the LaserDisc all those years ago. John.

Greetings John, hope you are well, enjoyed this video with it’s mix of a review, books and Tenet! I’m curious, what’s the excitement over pieces of tin, as in steelbooks?? I do see collectors trying their best only to buy steelbooks. It’s usually the same discs as the regular, and cheaper, standard case, no? I did get a few (about 10) but at least 60% then have scratches or dents… and I read about collectors who go through a cycle of receiving and returning 1/2 a dozen times to try to get a ‘perfect’ tin… after all most of my 8mm prints are in cardboard boxes, but I still like them! Anyway, I just don’t understand the effort when the contents are the same discs… but I respect those that collect steelbooks, just not for me…cheers, Steve

I don't buy many steelbooks Steve but occasionally I think it makes a release a little bit more special so I put the extra fiver or so down. The CREED III steelbook is in the same style as the ROCKY steelbook so that clinched the deal. Will I ever look at it once it's on the shelf? Not very often. If you look on top of the top shelf behind me you'll just pick out and open steelbook of Jack Reacher and you'll never guess how much that cost me... well, it was in a 3 for £1 offer in another charity shop. Again I told them how much more valuable it was but they'd looked it up and that was all it was worth. I didn't bother arguing with them. John.

There has been little coming onto the 4K market that is worthy of the time to do one of these reviews so with the absence of that 1 to 4 set of the John Wick films I thought I'd get a few of the recent releases so that I'd have something to do videos about over the coming weeks. I know I should have reviewed the Avatar sequel but I found the first film a bit of a bore and couldn't face a longer version of it just to do a review and then probably have to tell everyone I didn't think much of it. Then again, I didn't like INCEPTION when I first saw it so it will be interesting to see what I think of it now after really getting into Christopher Nolan's TENET. @moviecollector5920

I can only guess but what I think it is is that the information is so miniscule that the slightest flaw in the layers will cause the problem. As each of the four discs I have so far found with the problem were all fine when I ran them first time I reckon the heat from the laser is tipping the flawed areas over the edge. Then again, it may just be that certain players can't handle slightly dodgy areas as well when the players are older as when they were new. I guess I'll find out one day when I get another player because the first discs going in will be the dodgy ones. John.

Universal have told us within their movie restoration extras on two different releases that there is image noise reduction applied to everything Gary. Apparently the scanning process exacerbates film grain which makes sense. The Firm looks amazing as do quite a few films that have been through the process. The Fifth Element is one I think about quite often as it's sharper than my 35mm print so I expect some sharpening went on there to effect that which would have probably meant a little more image noise reduction than usual. Film grain is coarser on the 4K than the 35mm which wouldn't be the case otherwise. John.

Hmmm I might have to look for the Aliens Book. How odd, that my copy of 187 on 4K arrived yesterday from Germany and there it is on your shelf (4K, Blu-ray or DVD?). The wife and I sat down to watch it tonight and we have about 20 minutes left but had to head on to bed as we have work early ok the morning. I’m a little disappointed in the image quality of the UHD version, it looks like they have just taken the standard Blu-ray master and slapped it on to a UHD disc. Its, just not good at all. A shame really as it’s a good film which deserves better.

Morning Martin. That 187 copy you see on the shelf was a present from Daniel from Sweden when we met at the IMAX a few months ago. It's a digibook and comes with DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. The 4K does not have HDR so if yours is the same then that's why there is no discernible difference between the 4K and Blu-ray. A terrific film though. Why had I never heard of it before? The Aliens book is primarily a photo montage from the set so apart from a few pages of writing it's all photos and captions. It does mean it's easy to pick up and look at without feeling you have to read droves of text. John.

An excellent film from an excellent novel. One of the rare occassions that the film is as good, if not better, than the source material. The main reason is the completely different ending to the novel. The only other movie that comes to mind with a superior ending to the source material is The Mist. Even Stephen King remarked that the film's ending was better than his original ending. I dont know if the author of the novel, John Grisham, thought the same about film version of The Firm.

@@moviecollector5920 I work as a colorist with calibrated panels (OLED & LCD). From a professional point of view this delivery is a complete mess with some real encoding issues throughout the runtime of the movie. On low HDR capacity devices such as projectors this would be less visible for technical reasons (high luminance exacerbates everything, from genuine grain structure to noise and compression artefacts).

Ah, but the image quality is very good Andy. I expect image noise reduction reduced the film grain appearance but who cares when it works this well? I'm not sure the sound was overly important with this one as it's more about story and suspense but I've only ever seen it twice and that was I believe The Empire (our favourite cinema when it was at its best back in the 1990's) and now this 4K disc release. Probably not the most repeatable film but I'm pleased to have it. I looked at the LaserDisc often years ago but never fancied splashing out so much on it. John.
