Very true. Going forward, I could still see Harry Potter as English literature that's appropriate for schools and higher education, provided that an annotated version is released. Providing annotations is always better than forcing publishers to change the original with modern vocabulary. When I heard that Astrid Lindgren's works are being rewritten instead of annotated, I got very upset about this gross disservice to Swedish literature and the study thereof.

The house elves being slaves is an interesting subject as it is stated in the books that the house elves like being enslaved and several got upset when they were presented with freedom. Winky was destroyed when Crouch gave her clothes and all the house elves at Hogwarts (apart from Dobby) refused to clean the Gryffindor common room because of all the clothes in there. Kreacher was honoured to serve the Black family and later Harry. Of course one could argue that they don't know anything different but they clearly do. Ultimately this begs the question: what is a willing slave other than a volunteer?

Exactly Hermione is trying to be helpful but it's actually being deeply culturally insensitive. Not to be fair there's the whole magical contract thing to consider, but I like to view it kind of like in nature there are mutualistic and symbiotic relationships between things in the natural world. Why not have a magical symbiosis as well. I think what Hermione ultimately ends up doing is perhaps advocating for better treatment of them getting them more respect which is fine and I think even they can agree to that but everything else she was trying to do with hugely overstepping and unwanted to them the people she's trying to care about.
@sawanna50827 күн бұрын
There is still the problem with the selve punishments of house elves when they do things wrong. This makes the enslavement questionable alone. This also means a house elf can be basically to be ordered to do anything and they have to obey. A lot of the house elfs are born as slaves they never had the chance to chose there fate from the start and I think the intoctrinatiation that freedom equals shame is only there to keep them into subjection.

Hi! I agree with almost everything except one thing. Toning down the abuse Harry suffered would be a dishonor to his character, J. K. Rowling work and the thousands of children and teens who suffer abuse on a daily or weekly basis and no one comes to help them. People who inflict harm on others specifically children Would do anything they can to hide the fact that it’s happening from the public eye so kids being rescued isn’t that easy. I know, I was one of those kids. Fortunately, for me, my life did turn around. But that was only because a family member stepped in. Most abused children unfortunately aren’t that fortunate. I could empathize and relate to Harry because of what he suffered at the Jerseys hands. Obviously, I would never condone something like that, but it helped to make him relatable. I’m excited for your next video! I actually said Dursley‘s, but I’m dictating this and Siri changed it

A lot of the time movies and TV shows will add a "gay male best friend" to the straight female protagonist, and him being gay is usually for comedy purposes. Not once have I seen (at least in Western media) a straight male protagonist with a lesbian best friend. But I am with you on that. As long as there's a setup to someone being part of thee LGBT umbrella and it isn't dropped like a bombshell, I'm fine with it. Like, maybe a guy once tried dating girls during his school years, but towards the end of senior year in high school found out he was into guys after spending time with a guy and landed his first boyfriend at Prom (or their school/country's equivalent to Prom). Or a girl unknowingly hit on another girl in first year of high school and expected to be ridiculed but the other girl ended up asking her out weeks later. It's the genuine buildup that people want to see, not something being thrown in for the sake of "representation".

Regarding S.P.E.W, I think Rowling wrote it that way to highlight how in the real world there is still some form of slavery but "nobody cares". As for the abusive Dursleys described in book 1, it was to give hope to kids that lived through horrible environment and by reading this book, they would have an opportunity to dream. The lack of lgbt characters could be explained out of universe because of Rowling’s declarations and values growing up in a different time. But inside the universe I guess we can assume the magic society, much like ours, wasn’t as tolerable with those demographics by the time the books were written. And in my opinion, having lgbt characters in the original books wouldn’t made much difference. It would’ve been cool but at the end it wasn’t totally necessary. I’m latino and visually impaired and I think it would’ve been great to see characters with Hispanic ancestry or visual disabilities, but I’m okay not having them in the original books.

For me, the amount of animal abuse is horrible. The children get living animals regularly in Transfiguration and McGonagall says in OotP "Mr. Thomas, if you do that to your mouse again, I'll have to put you in detention." And in one book she even mentions that a needle pillow of a student still trembles of fear if you get close to it with a needle, which indicates that its able to feel pain, if pinched at with a needle, when the charm wasn't done right. And in GoF, the Dragon which Krum has to fight gets a curse in his eye and tramples his eggs. Not to mention the amount of fear and stress for the dragons for this "game". And the treatment of the dragon in Gringotts is very similar to the treatment of "Dancing Bears" in Europe, which "dance" because the, expect pain at their feet when the hear certain music. I've just listend to all the audiobooks again, and while I still love the story and characters, the situation of the animal abuse didn't age well for me

I think it’s important to recognize that the story is set in 1991-1998. And Harry is raised by the Durselys starting in 1981. Child abuse was not treated with nearly as much severity at this time as it would be in 2024. Also, the dursleys really cared about their reputation, if they were abusing Harry behind closed doors, this is not something they would want people finding out about. So they would make sure to keep it a secret.

I see a lot of people saying that the fat shaming is not a big deal, because the people fat shamed are the villains of the story. I think you don't see through the right angle. The problem is not the insult of the bad characters, but the fact that there is not a positive character that is fat, and not shamed for it. (Neville who is chubby, is the victim of Drago and his gang, until he shape up) Crabbe and Goyle are big and stupid, wich is also a cliché about fat people, same goes for the Dursleys. Even Ron in the movies is the butt of a bunch of fat jokes, because he is a bit of a gluttony.(he is also dumbed down a bit, wich goes along with the cliché again) The fat shaming come from the lack of balance in the representation of the fat people. (I get that the Dursleys are fat as a comparison to Harry who is malnourrished, wich is a way to emphatise the mistreatment he receive and the menace they project) The story lack of a nice and strong chubby character (well actually we have Molly, but she is not really a character that children can identify with).

I feel like this argument could be applied to a lot of these points, but as a gay man, I will point out that specifically, with LGTBQ+ representation, it doesn't always have the intended effect. If someone has a great understanding of LGBTQ+ culture, it's almost always a hit with me. But, on the other end, there are also a lot of LGBTQ+ characters that, to me at least, come off as very stereotypical and, as a result, seems to be more of a slap in the face than genuine representation. Luckily, I do feel like this has gotten better over the years, but there are still times where it's very clumsily represented in media.
