In the Dutch translation, some of the names are also genius puns: Dumbledore is Perkamentus (Perkament = parchment) McGonagall is Anderling, “ander” meaning someone else, refering to McGonagall being an Animagus Trelawney is Zwamdrift, “zwam”means mushroom or bullshitting, and drift means to want something very much. Here name literally means “wants to talk bullshit” 😂 Hermione’s name is Hermelien Griffel, a griffel is a stylus or pencil, and the phrase “tien met een griffel” (an A with a stylus) means to ace a test Weasley is Wemel in Dutch. “Wemelen” means that it’s very crowded somewhere, tying in to the fact there’s many Weasleys. Scrimgeour is Schobbejak, which means lowly criminal Stan Shunpike is Sjaak Stuurman (stuur = to steer/drive and man is well… man) so he’s a driving man… McNair is Vleeschouwer, wich combined “vlees” (meat) with “houwer” (cutter), making his name mean “meat cutter” since he’s Buckbeak’s executionist. Tom Riddle is Marten Viliin (I know, very different, but otherwise the anagram did not work). The word “vilein” (pronounced the same as “vilijn” means cunning and villainous, and is therefore also a pun. There’s many more examples of punny names in the Dutch translation (all of the names got Dutchified (except for Harry Potter), but these were the best ones.

BEHIND THE NAMES Minerva McGonagall Professor McGonagall shares her first name-Minerva-with the Roman goddess of wisdom, who is often portrayed as grave and majestic... rather like the Transfiguration teacher. Rubeus Hagrid Hagrid's first name,Rubeus,is based on latin word for 'red'-the word 'ruby' comes from the same root! 'Hagrid' means you had a bad night's sleep. Albus Dumbledore 'Dumbledore' is an old word for 'Bumblebee',which also appears in "The Mayor of Casterbridge" by Thomas Hardy!'Albus' is the Latin word for 'white'. Severus Snape Snape is the name of a place in England.Severus is a Latin meaning 'stern' and is the root of the English word 'severe'... very apt for the strict Potions master. Hedwig Harry's snowy owl shares her name with a medieval saint. (Nothing to do with her heads or wigs!) Pomona Sprout Pomona was the Roman goddess of fruit and trees, which hints at the green-fingered Herbology professor's passion for plants. Voldemort Tom Riddle's adopted name is created from the french words for 'flight of death'. The final 't' in French is silent, so it should be pronounced: Voldemor... Sir Nicholas De Mimsy Porpington Nearly Headless Nick's surname combines 'Mimsy' (a word from Lewis Carroll's poem 'Jabberwoky') and the made up word 'Porpington'-together this sounds quite pompous-a bit like Nick himself! Draco Malfoy Draco is the latin word for dragon.Draco's family surname is an invented name based on the French words for 'bad'(mal) and 'faith'(foi).Quite appropriate from someone who is often up to no good...
