The opening title sequence was shot using a technique called "Day For Night" where the cinematographer closes the aperture by a few stops , in order to achieve the "night effect" while shooting this in still relative daylight. This technique is why you can see all of the details of the plane and mountain so clearly yet it still looks like "night". Try and shoot this sort of thing, at "Real Night" and you would not get what you needed!

Ron Goodwin, was a fantastically talented composer, his style was so recognisable. Whether you're listening to "633 Squadron" or "Force 10 from Navarone", the Goodwin style came through. I believe that his film scores had a "feel" all their own. He also scored the four Miss Marple films staring Dame Margaret Rutherford. Ron was exquisitely ubiquitous beyond any reasonable doubt.....

Had this movie in my collection for many years. Saw it in the theater when first released. A great opening title sequence. The full bodied music is totally on point. A movie, based on the novel by Alistair MacClean, who also wrote the screenplay for this movie. I can never get bored of watching this classic war movie! In the creative writing class that i always attended, my tutor had always said that there must be a "hook" in the opening paragraph. Well, in this case, this is a classic example of just. In the music, the theme by Ron Goodwin is the hook, then this military plane appearimg is another hook. But the real hook in the dtory is when the men get together and meet for the briefing for their mission.

I don't now how many scenes were shot 'day for night'. The 'look'' of the original neg. (opening titles) will have been 'tweaked' in the lab to achieve the desired result. The 'day for night' method was used to extend the contrast ratio of film emulsions. There is only a half hour 'dusk' window work in. Used correctly, it looks great. Arthur Ibbetson did a splendid job and clearly knew how to use it to best effect.

The aircraft involved was a tri-motor Junkers Ju 52/3mg4e, registration HB-HOT, msn 6595. It had served with the Swiss Air Force from 1939 to 1985, when it was acquired by Ju-Air, a company that offers sightseeing flights on vintage aircraft, and had logged 10,000 hours of flight time. It had been used in the films Where Eagles Dare (1968), and Valkyrie (2008) and the 2012 German movie Bis zum Horizont, dann links! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Ju-Air_Junkers_Ju_52_crash
