Bill, I'm a kitchen designer for Menards here in Indianapolis Indiana. You can go to your local paint or hardware store and buy sample cans of paint for less than $5 each. I would suggest you buy a can for each color that you have on the walls so if you do need to touch it up you won't be having to buy a quart sized can.

Love that "careful cut" idea. Wish I'd known that a few years ago. And that put a little on no sanding till last coat is going to come in handy soon when we redo one of our basement rooms. And lastly, didn't know about the old with box. Also something that will come in handy soon. Thanks!
@LiveSimpleLiveFree3 жыл бұрын
If you want to do the job without sanding until the final coat, you must do EVERY coat as if it is your last, and trying to do each coat in such a way that no sanding is necessary. That skill will develop. At first, I was so bad that I had to sand every coat. (But that was 30 years ago! LOL)

Enjoyed. You do great work Bill. That switch is now very handy. I live in a house that has the craziest places for light switches I have ever seen, Lived here for over a month and my son and I are just now getting use to there locations. God bless you all. Continuing prayers for Pop.

Nice work Bill. Like you, I only like to sand on the final coat. "Mudding" looks easy, but like you said, it's a skill that is honed with practice. I like to start with as little mud as possible as it's much easier (and cleaner) to add more than to sand off too much - an experienced drywaller taught me that. I like that new switch box you installed...that's a clever contraption - never knew those existed until now. Thanks for sharing.

Good morning, Bill! We lived in a house that's original deed dated from 1895. I feel your frustration with light switches!!
@paulaelliott49033 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bill! My house was also built in 1970 and it has the same problem with light switches in a couple of spots, but that isn’t nearly as bad as not having enough outlets on the walls in each room. I hate having to run extension cords, but I do have a couple in necessary places for lamps. I have a hallway which does have a light overhead, but no outlet anywhere, which I really wish they had thought of. But, I am fortunate in so many other aspects of this house, so I am happy overall. Take care and God Bless you and family,
@LiveSimpleLiveFree3 жыл бұрын
In 1970, they new about lamps, and a clock. They had NO IDEA how many electronic gadgets we would be using, and plugging in, in the future!

I learned something. I never knew you put spackle then the tape on top of that. I have a patch that I have been waiting for my son to finish. Now I don't have to wait!!! Thanks Bill.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree3 жыл бұрын
If you don't put the mud on first, there is nothing to hold the tape against the wall (unless you buy the self-adhesive tape, which is relatively new, and costs a lot more.) Put the mud on, then put the tape on, then try to scrape ALL of the mud off, leaving the paper completely exposed.. That is the first coat.

Thanks for the lesson and the tips.

Bill, l have a small kitchen, not enough outlets, when l look at new homes ( something l just like doing for fun) the first thing l notice is outlets in the kitcken, the other thing is laundry room, with a deep sink to wash my med. dog, and cat. I love a large kitchen and large laundry room. Where does one put canning jars, vacuum cleaner, ironing board,(l quilt) bucket, and cleaning supplies, these new modules home most don't have room for things l use. But big kitchen, lots of outlets, extra bed room for a sewing room, and big laundry room with big deep sink, window for seedlings, closet for vac, cleaning supplies. These are what l look for, if l have to cut back on any of these important things, build me an outhouse, don't need 3 fancy bathrooms. Don't need island in kitchen or big living room. So that's my favorite thing to do. When you get done your wife will love it. You always do a good job.

You can use painter's tape on the bottom of the jig saw, that way it won't scratch or smear the wall. I would never try this electrical stuff but it's nice to learn. Thanks

Hey Bill I live in a home built in 1952. It’s like one per room. My livingroom is just like yours. It is truly a nightmare. I’m afraid to have an electrical contractor to come and fix anything because I don’t want to hear that the house is not up to code. In the mean time I have cords under rugs. I just heard a report about how the severe storms in Texas are going to affect the cost of food at the grocery store. So many cows died and produce was frozen. It just reminded me of what you have been talking about. This was very cool.💖
@LiveSimpleLiveFree3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to worry about your house not being up to code. Building codes continue to get more and more strict for NEW construction. But MOST older homes do not meet current building codes. It's not an issue, they are grandfathered in. An electrician could add extra switches for you without any code issues. Yes, the storm in Texas just reiterates what I have been saying all along about being prepared! And the crops that were destroyed by the cold were just one more incident of cold weather crop losses that are happening all over the world because of the Grand Solar Minimum. Food will CONTINUE to get more scarce and more expensive. The severe food shortages have not really started yet. But they will!

or you could just put in smart bulbs and just tell them to turn on or turn off. And if you forgot to turn off a light and you were in bed...no getting up. just tell it to turn off. You can also schedule them to turn off or on while you aren't home. Same thing with smart plugs...you can tell them to start your kettle or whatever you want.

Interesting to see the difference between US and UK wiring regulations. UK would not permit cables to be joined with twist on joints, ours have to be screw terminal junctions. I know the US use the twist connections a lot and they look very easy to use. We follow IEEE regulations here I assume the USA has something similar?
