So interesting how everyone is very different. I’ve been vegetarian most of my life but decided to try doing a paleo type diet for about 3 months. I became so depressed and sleep deprived that I was nearly suicidal. Just very dark. It was the worst I’ve ever felt. I couldn’t sleep at all either. Once I added more carbs back in and cut back on meat, I felt so much better. Happier, more energy, lighter and more hopeful. It’s so important to listen to your body ❤

I'm the opposite. Veganism made me severly ill. I can't absorb nonheme iron, so I can't go longer than about a week without meat, otherwise I'll faint from anemia (and I don't even like meat). When I tried veganism, I had severe bloating, my hair was falling out, my nails would bend backwards, and I was so weak and fatigued. I tried the paleo diet, and after just two weeks, I felt amazing. My digestion improved dramatically, and I could walk without limping for the first time in years! I hate it when people try to push veganism on me because they don't seem to realize that, for some of us, that's actually very dangerous advice. I also have a friend who was hospitalized because of the keto diet, yet I know someone else who seems to thrive on keto. Dietary dogma can really be dangerous! You're right, it is interesting how different we all are.

Huge respect to you Sarah! I can not stress enough how much I admire the way you change your views, and openly share them. I wish more people were like you, and it makes me trust you even more. You didn’t fail; you experienced and learned. I feel like so many public people kind of “disappear” or refuses to change their views. Everything you say makes complete sense to me. I wasn’t so sure before about the carnivore, but the seasonal eating and using different diets as a tool for a period of time is something I highly agree with!

Thank you so VERY MUCH for these awesome interviews. They are so helpful and informative. Veganism didn't work for me. After 16 years, I was 40 pounds overweight, weak, exhausted all the time, and starving 24/7 no matter how many grains/beans/veggies I ate multiple times a day. Every body is different!

Interesting but made me feel a little uneasy unusually for one of your talks. I’m not sure how well the discussion clearly illustrated the importance of following your biology when it comes to eating. Sarah still seems quite obsessed with eating well and following a circadian rhythm. I felt intuitive eating could become another obsession. I gave up listening half way through. For me a gentler, self compassionate and less externally driven approach to food makes more sense. Something I’m learning from Smart-body Smart Mind.

I very much agree. If anything, the pro-metabolic approach is just another diet fad. I was into it the past two years and it became a fixation and added to my anxiety. Intuitive eating and trusting our body/nervous system is the best way to approach nutrition. Especially since every nutrition study ever is funded by some entity with a vested interest.

Oh dear! I guess I needed to hear this today😅🙏. I've been vegan for over 5 years now and I've been trying to heal chronic pain and fatigue (among other symptoms) + CPTSD through so many different therapies, until I found somatics and now I'm exploring this work which deeply resonates with me. BUT, besides this, and to be quite frank, I've been getting this strange cravings of meat and fish...(which I've been ignoring) just since this year when I've been struggling the most with anxiety... So I had honestly been wondering if I'm lacking of any nutrient... I've also been partly following medical medium protocols, which implies low or no fat. And I've been feeling very very depressed... But I was attributing it to the fact that I've been ill for so long and the lack of sunlight in England, where I live. I've also had other issues for the first time in my whole life, like cavities in my theeth and extra dry skin and hair... This interview is giving me so much validation on the intuitions I've been having that I cannot tell you how grateful I feel right now!😭🙏💜💜💜🍓 Much love to everyone!

The problem I have with these keto, carnivore high fat diets is that they don't really make sense (even though I hear a lot of people say they feel better after following); here's my reasons - 1) I don't see where in nature we would get huge amounts of meat - despite the vegan/meat eating debate we're not built to catch animals for food. We don't have fangs or possess huge strength or run fast all the attributes needed to hunt prey. If we were built to eat meat we'd eat it raw and unprocessed and eat all parts of the animal and humans just don't (apart from say the massai in Kenya). On the other hand I understand that small amounts of animal food do seem to be needed cos of the B12 aspect so occasional catches of small animals probably were part of our hunter gatherer ancestors. 2) The improvements on keto need to be analyzed alongside whatever the person was eating prior to the keto diet - in many cases a poor quality processed diet, same with a lot of people eating vegan based diets; giving up all of that would probably result in improvement. So sure some benefit for a few months or a year or so. It seems to work for conditions like epilepsy. 3) Just because we can eat things for awhile doesn't mean we should the fact that your guest here couldn't stay on the carnivore diet long term is testimony to that; I'm not aware of any long term keto studies where people continued to thrive on the diet. So putting all your empasis on a particular diet to solve any health problem is not the way to go. There's a lot to think about here and yes some good stuff on seasonality and hormone balancing and listening to our own bodies. Only recently found your channel and thanks for the work you do.

I believe in the Genesis record and biblical balance in nutrition. I have been seriously considering doing carnivore elimation process like Neisha Berg for my personal health struggles. I don't approach it from an Evolutionary Theory world view. I don't believe that plants are all trying to kill us.😂 Creation Humans started life in a garden. Then after the Flood the lord told humans to eat meat. He made us so he knows our needs better than we do. Fresh whole foods in their season makes a lot of sense to me. Moderate maybe later. But I need to see where the elimination plan takes me.

Humans initially evolved as scavengers. The human digestion system is medium length and acidic. It's similar to other scavengers, somewhere between an apex hunter and a carrion eater. Humans opportunistically ate the leftovers of the kills from other animals. Because we could use rocks, we could get the marrow and brains. Also, when available, humans ate shellfish, fish, eggs, grubs, and insects. This led humans to become hunters, once we learned to make spears. During the Paleolithic, the favorite food was blubbery megafauna. A single kill, once the meat was dried, could've fed a band for months. This provided immense nutrient-density. According to the expensive tissue hypothesis, this explains why the human gut shrunk. We lost the capacity to digest much fiber, in exchange for redirecting more energy to brain growth.

Increasing carbs, by holding onto more water, is one way of maintaining limited mineral stores. Yet some argue that your minerals are only likely to be out of balance on a carnivore diet if you're low on taurine. Meat potentially has a lot of taurine. But if the meat isn't fresh and/or is ground, much of the taurine could've leaked out with the fluids. It might be wise to first supplement with taurine before determining there really is a problem. Among much else, what taurine does is regulate mineral levels, in helping to excrete surpluses and helping to hold them with low levels. It's one of the most important nutrients, similar to fat-soluble vitamins as hormones and hormone-like molecules. Another thing to consider is that there are massive amounts of minerals in certain animal foods: bone broths, dairy, eggs, etc. If you're low on minerals, be sure to increase these mineral-rich foods to see if it makes a difference. One more point to consider is that even plant foods these days are lower in minerals because of soil depletion. Foods from animals that are pasture-raised or wild-caught on healthy and regenerative land will eat plants rich in minerals (along with phytonutrients) and so concentrate them. Simply asserting your mineral levels were low on a carnivore diet, by itself, really tells us nothing at all. We'd need more info about precisely how the diet was formulated to know where the problem might've been. Arguably, plant foods are unlikely to be the problem. Consider that, technically, any diet that is 70% or more animal foods is still carnivore. That allows up to 30% plant foods. The carnivore diet isn't as restrictive as some pretend it to be. Then consider the first point I made. Greater carb intake is one way of ameliorating mineral deficiencies. That can be done with plant foods, of course. But then again, there are tons of carbs in dairy, an animal food. All in all, one can eat seasonal and local plant foods, such as fruit, on a carnivore diet or some other variant of an animal-based diet. Even lacto-ovo-vegetarianism is an animal-based diet and could consist of 70+% of animal foods (i.e., eggs and dairy).

So good talk. Thanks ❤I switched to carnivore 5 months ago but do from time to time avocado and banana when my body wants it. Listening to your body is first but if your system is dysregulated you cant hear what it needs. Since I do SBSM I learn to follow my impulses that are more and more coming from the body and not my head habits / cravings. I come from Poland and cold is my thing, I love the idea about not going to warm climates in winter time. I saw both my mom and sister traveling in winter to nice warm places and feeling much worse there or getting cold after coming home. Fascinating 🧐

There are numerous and diverse diets that, if formulated correctly, can be healthy and consistent with human evolution. But there are other diets that are undeniably the opposite. As for what is most optimal, the best diets are some combination of: seasonal, local, organic, nutrient-dense, low-carb, high-fat, animal-based, nose-to-tail, pasture-raised, and wild-caught. This is quite broad and flexible as dietary recommendations. This potentially can include: lacto-ovo-vegetarianism, traditional foods, pescatarianism, primal, paleo, carnivore, ketovore, etc. But what it excludes is: standard American diet, strict veganism, frugivore, etc. Rather than dietary dogma, this is scientifically-based dietary guidelines. We shouldn't avoid basic proven knowledge for the sake of political correctness in pretending all diets are equal, as if there are no universal truths to human biology.

Hi Irene! Thank you for your videos :) Could you please give some advice on swallowing anxiety? I thought I was over my swallowing issues that stemmed from an incident years ago were I had an issue swallowing a tablet. But recently (out of the blue) I suddenly have issues swallowing again (ENT checked my throat - it's fine). I have no idea why this has suddenly come back, every time I swallow I feel petrified and this means I'm not eating as much as I used to. I'd really appreciate any advice you have.

Serendipity, Jen here from Team Lyon. Swallowing issues are very common in this work. They can stem from many things including one's early experience, experiences with choking, being intubated, being in situations where it was unsafe to talk, near drownings, experiences involving shock, and many more. There isn't one way to work with them other than to learn how to do this work that Irene teaches. Her 21 Day Tune Up can be a great way to start learning how to listen to and work with what's happening in your own nervous system (and body). Working with a trained practitioner is another option (and it can often be complementary do working through Irene's course). Here's a link to the "Tune Up" in case you'd like to learn more: 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up - 21daytuneup.com
