Moving my Offgrid Homestead Pt. 1

We are moving all of the buildings I have at my offgrid homestead to a new location! I used a tractor and a pipe trailer and pulled the buildings on with my truck before driving them to the new location.
Its exciting to say the least, and I had to be very careful not to wreck my buildings! Moving these buildings starts a new chapter for Traplines and Inlines and I cant even tell you how excited I am!
Welcome to Traplines and Inlines, this channel focuses on my dog and I on our remote Off the Grid Homestead in Northern Canada. I make videos on off grid homesteading and building, trapping, chickens, mechanical projects, and hunting and fishing.
I went offgrid and started building my cabin over two years ago, while I was still in highschool. Since then I have built many things at the homestead and have had the priviledge of learning many things along the way.
The homestead is designed to be relatively low maintenance and with extremely minimal expenses. All of my electricity comes from solar power, heat from woodstoves, and I haul all my water so I dont have any monthly costs associated with my homestead.
I love the lifestyle, especially because it gives me the absolute freedom to do whatever I please. I plan on continuing to tackle awesome projects and work at building and fixing many more things, and I cant wait to share them with you on the channel.

Hey bud for the cabin, Jack it up high enough on cribbing to back your trailer underneath so that you don't have o let it tip like the sheds did on the tilt deck. Then reverse the process to set it back down on the ground. Looks like you have plenty of logs there to use for cribbing.👍

I agree here on jacking it up. My dad and I moved a shed this way and it worked perfect. it is 10x20 so we put on the trailer the long way so it would not tilt forward or backward. I say after you lift it back up from the front porch. in other words let the porch be towards the front end of the trailer the long ways. good luck

The most time consuming but definitely the best way to go about it if keeping it upright is a priority, which obviously it is.

I would remove the frame from wheel chassis if possible, lift the cabin drop her down on the frame or use skids and pull it with a dozer(not sure if that tractor can pull it or not, low gear 10hours of travelling time lol.......I think that trailer is a no no, can you imagine blowing a tire, and that narrow wheel base, ...or get someone with some experience to come out and have a look...

The cabin I would not try to pull it on or off. I would jack it up and stack it on cribbing to get the trailer under it. Ring lags to tie it down vs over the top. Best of luck however you go about it. Worst case you end up sleeping in the trapping shed for a bit. TY for the video

Love your videos ! I think I would put the cabin on some big timber skids and just drag it with the tractor attach your tow straps directly to the skids so you aren’t putting pressure on the cabin walls good luck.

@Bart Comeau - that's a great idea unless he has to go DOWN a steep hill like the one shown when he moved the shop. There is nothing to stop it from sliding into the tractor on the down side of a steep hill. But if there isn't one then this will work.

shiela and monkey you’ve watched too many dramatic TV recreations. That kinda stuff doesn’t just turn into a bob sled on its own. On ice maybe but not rock and clay. Even the wood on the steel trailer has enough friction it won’t just slide off. I moved a 12x20 shed on my own on similar ground and with a side slope. He’s doing overkill already. Breaking straps tells me there is a lot of friction there.

Okay since you asked for advise, here is what I whould do... You'll have to jackup the cabin and back the trailer under the cabin. I watched you build that cabin, it will stand up to the move without any cross bracing. I like how you braced the wood stove and pipe in the shop you moved...smart. I would do that again. You'll need to get a trailer WITHOUT a tilt bed. You're already worried about the thing being top heavy and you will not be able to skid that cabin anywho. We used an old flatbed that is stripped right down to just the metal frame and then use 4x4's or railroad ties or what ever it takes to block it up just enough to clear the tires. These are bolted securely to the frame. Then when you get the cabin set on the trailer you can use lag bolts or allthread to secure the cabin runners to those blocks. Everytime we have moved a building we secure the runners to the frame of the trailer and we also use straps to secure it just like you did for your two smaller buildings. Good luck I hope you are able to get it moved. If not you could always just build a new small cabin at your new work site.

One in the Bush is better than Pieces in the field. Leave the cabin in the bush you'll have a remote trapping base. Put a cot in the shop or chicken house in case you want to spend the night on site.

I’d say to start with 20 ton bottle jacks. Slowly lift the cabin and crib it with fresh solid Timbers. I’d say 12x12” Timbers at least. Lift it high enough so a trailer can be back under it. Once it’s on the trailer chains and chain binders will be needed to help the building stay on the trailer. Straps won’t be strong enough. You will need to chain the building from the start of the second floor in order to keep it from tipping. To do this you’ll need to get heavy duty eyelets that pass through the cabins frame inside through a steel plate and then nut and bolt it so it can’t pull through the building. This will give you solid connections to hook your chains too. Make sure you chain both sides of the cabin to the trailer. After that it should be good to go. I’ve moved a few buildings and getting the equipment is the hardest part. Go really slow. Think everything through carefully. Don’t rush or it will go wrong I promise. Good luck. Find a crane company in your area and those guys can tell you all you need to know. Might even help you get some gear. 👍👍

My gut says leave the cabin where it is, it's in such a beautiful spot above the lake, and nice to keep your first cabin intact next to your dogs resting place and for future family visits. Like someone else said you could maybe stay in your work shed while you built the new log home. Either way I know you will do what is best for you. @@rm6857 I know, not the greatest idea. There are RVs rated for extreme cold but he'd have to buy one large enough to safely accommodate a small wood stove for supplemental heat. Heating is the biggest concern, he could go broke buying propane tanks every other week to stay warm. I think moving his cabin is fine, as long as he has help doing it. But if it still topples - what other immediate living choices will he have to stay on his building site? Except an RV?

Definitely Jack it up and use cribbing. Once it’s on the trailer add lots of bracing and strap the piss out of it. Use jacks and cribbing again to unload it.

Crib up the cabin. Make a skid platform of huge logs that extends out as wide as your narrowest point will allow on the road to it's new home. Then angle cut the front of the logs so they slide without problems. Strap it down and full send it from there!

On the cabin. Move everything down to the bottom to reduce top weight. If you used screws to build it, partially disassemble if I've been watching you for a minute or two, you can do anything you set your mind to.

Get 4 light poles, full length, set the cabin in the center of them , brace the cabin from inside and outside with 2x6x20 , then strap the cabin to all corners of the light poles and run chain from one of poles to tractor , then skid the cabin to next location , I suggest getting help and take your time

Up to a hundred years ago, a lot of building moving around here was done during with winter. Log skids pulled by horse teams. They moved medium barns many miles. I think they laid down sets of logs, pulled to the next set, stopped, moved a set, repeat. That's the only way I'd even think about it, with the tractor and with extra bodies, not solo.

I would use two cables or straps . One on the bottom like you did the other buildings . Place other cable or strap about 10’ or 12 ‘ feet high .

Hey Kyle, when you move your cabin, you said it would be top heavy, well, if you cut two to four square holes in the floor in all four corners of the floor, then run a strap through them and over and under the trailer, then tighten the piss out of them, that would help hold your cabin from flipping over, take all your stuff out of the top and put it in the bottom before you move it. You can always reach the square cutout pieces once you get it moved.

I think a few pipes run 90 to your trailer pipes (not attached) could be used as rollers to help the cabin glide up on her. If you are afraid that she is going backwards and over, run a few brace straps to the front and tighten as you winch her up. A winch on each corner might be another way. Or, the best way, jack her up, crib it, and then back the trailer under it.

the easiest way to move your other cabin would be to get it sitting up on 4 inch pipes so you can easily roll it and get it to flat ground. then jack the entire building up corner by corner and block it up to the height of the trailer.winch the building onto the trailer and once you get it to your destination do the reverse.

The main issue you have 8s having to do with. Loading and unloading. In order to stabilize your cabin, you would need to Jack it up high enough to back your trailer right under it and then lowering it on to trailer. Same process for unloading. All that’s left is watching not to hook up on tree tops as you move down the road. Have fun. Be careful .

I did something like that many years ago. Not sure how far you are going but I jacked up the building and put braced skids under it. Dragged 2 building about 600 yards. Worked and didn't cost that much to build the skids. You are right, your building is to top heavy to risk putting it on the trailer.

Hey bud! I vote MOVE the cabin! If its top heavy, build verticle supports down to a strong platform. Possibly take off the front deck and build shoring onto added temporary framework. I'd also load it long ways if its top heavy to allow the ability to tilt more onto the trailer for loading and offloading.

Could you put your cabin on log skids and drag it to the new location? It would help some on keeping the center of gravity lower. I'm not sure of the terrain on the way as the skids would have less control than the trailer. Winter would be be better for skidding but makes the tow vehicle more important. No ideal solution just has trade offs. Great job on living the life many of us contemplated when we were younger.

Hi. Well done on moving the two smaller buildings by yourself. I would strongly recommend you leave the cabin where it is. The 2nd floor extension over your deck will rack and twist because it is not truly tied into the main home. The extension is going to fall away if you try to move it. The steep short driveway down to the cabin will also put a lot of strain on the building as well. Well enough of my you shouldn't advice and let us see what you actually decide to do. Slide it up also frt door/overhang first. Use the weight of the overhang to your advantage when going up hill. and tilt the bed back b-4 going down hill. Any slopes to the sides should be addressed ahead of time by moving some dirt
