Matt, I’ve been using the saw blade on my trimmer for years! A little tip to make it easier to use - attach a 1” metal pipe or a piece of rebar to the shaft of the trimmer that extends 4-6” past the radius of the blade. Rest the new “guide” against the branch/tree and then slide the blade into whatever you’re cutting. This prevents the kickback effect and makes it way easier to control. Also, have you thought about eventually putting the solar panels on the roof of the new house or your porch cover to get them up out of the shadows of the surrounding trees? Another thing to consider is using the water from the river to make electricity. Hydro is super efficient and that river will always flow constant with all the rain you get. There’s a great KZbinr that specializes in micro hydro for off-gridders like yourselves. Look into it.

I seen a solar design on KZbin that was pretty ingenious that used bifacial panels in rows about 8 feet off the ground and they planted vegetable and fruit plants under them so they were partially shaded from the hot sun in the middle of the day. Their produce production doubled so the solar panel structure became dual purpose, plus no longer had to worry about trimming grass under the panel support structure.

There are plenty of sites with information on the direction and the angle of your solar panels. All you have to do is input your location and you can get a winter and summer angle! Please don't change anything about your channel, you two kids are so much fun to watch.

Exactly. If you have no shading issues it's a slam dunk to get the optimal direction and tilt which will maximize the kWh of power you get out. The only time you want to do anything different is if you're backfeeding to the grid for $ and want to maximize revenue, or if you have predictable daily load at the certain time a day and want to maximize power taken off the panels vs from a limited battery storage (round trip to the batteries and maybe through an inverter is always inefficient). The good news is buying bulk panels, batteries, and adding your own inverter and charge controller is so much cheaper than the residential systems.

I am probably not the only one saying this but, buy yourself a pair of large lopping shears. It has a short hooky blades with long arms like scissors. These work on pretty good size limbs and trees and they never run out of gas and the carburetor never breaks down on them. They're also very easy to use. They will make very short work of vines. You will find that they are one of your favorite tools in the jungle that you live in.

You need a translation app on your phone or a dedicated translation device. Keep in mind that as the seasons change the suns pathway also changes and shadows move when you orient your solar panels. Even in PR the days get shorter during the winter months and the suns position in the sky changes. You already know all of that but just a reminder for when you plan your building and electrical system.

Your 19-20 deg solar panel tilt is about the average of the 12 months for Puerto Rico. The angle varies from winter to summer. Its 4 deg summer, 19 deg spring & fall, and 34 deg winter for Puerto Rico. So unless you provide adjustable array mounts, your 20 deg fixed panels is probably best all seasons average (19-20) for when you need the max power from solar in spring, summer & fall months for AC power, in addition to normal general power loads. Your South, Southeast may not be best for your area ....Solar South (max solar at mid-day) is 13.4 deg west of South in Puerto Rico (193.4 deg compass reading). There are a number of websites you can google, that will calculate all this info for your exact location to get you the best positions. Please do your research for specific site location!

I enjoyed this episode because I have done the same thing with one of my Echo brush cutters. Stihl makes a helmet with a full plastic visor to protect your head and eyes. Wear some kind of cup (baseball catchers) to protect your equipment. You can purchase Kevlar chaps to finish your outfit. Kevlar chaps are Essential for cutting with a saw. Why because eventually, everyone gets tired and drops the saw a bit. Consequently, steel toed work boots are also a MUST. This comes from a 74 year old landscaper. Experience is the Best Teacher.

Buddy i got land in Puerto Rico and it’s actually a friend and Mine‘s property were partners for a investment but im a builder next time you have that guy there with the BIG Machine have him use his 2 foot bucket to dig a drainage canal for you go right down where the low area is and start from the top of your driveway and all the way to the far back of your property and if you can forward some drainage pipe, you could use that or get some fabric and also plastic lays some plastic down first in the hole. Throw some rock about maybe a foot and a half, 2 foot of a rock bigger rock that small bigger rock in the hole and put fabric on top of that’s a dirt go into the rocks and backfill that whole trench, and that will actually be drainage for you so the water from your driveway has come down towards your building property where you gonna build your house eventually will funnel into that drainage canal and going through the rocks and funnel all the way out to your back your property it’s a quick easy way to do it and cheap. You don’t need the pipe just put plastic down at the bottom of the hole, put 2 feet in there put fabric on top of that OK so you making sure that none of the rock you put in there is gonna get dirt cause you don’t wanna fill dirt between the rocks you can try to keep as much as you can out of it and then put the fabric down backfill it with your regular dirt and then you won’t see nothing and the water will suck right down into the rocks and that plastic actually will be like a slide and it slides it out to the property and drain your property perfectly you can hit me up anytime to talk and maybe when I come visit to check out the property my property we can meet and talk. Have a great day.

Hey Matt, technically you have an Echo PAS unit and Echo supplies many attachments that fit your unit to make many chores easy. Not sure if those are readily available in PR. The gearbox will be fine. My concern (as an Echo dealer) that the raised boss coupler to center the blade is in place as well as the proper coupler over the end of the blade to secure it with a cotter pin for the hole in the end of the shaft. Your blade is fine I’m sure. Glad to see you kept the safety guard on. Echo also has a power pruner attachment and 3’ extension for your taller tree cutting needs!

Architectural associate here. For fixed panel solar, we typically face as close to true south as possible to get the highest efficiency. Angle should be whatever the sun altitude is on the spring and fall equinox in your location. I belive in Puerto Rico it's around 23-24° You can google to be certain. Feel free to reach out directly with any questions like this. I'm happy to answer what I can.

A typical installation may not be suitable for off-grid applications. You should check whether this might be a good idea to maximize efficiency on winter days. If you have a large enough installation that will produce excess energy in the summer that you won't use, then this might be a good idea. Also consider how much electricity you use in the summer versus the winter. And, since Matt likes to go against the grain, maybe it would be interesting to make panels with manually adjustable angles two or four times a year?
@carlthor91
@carlthor91 3 ай бұрын
@BeckyHollandFuller FYI, I notice lately some installations are vertical, North South, to take advantage of morning afternoon sun in higher latitudes, as that increases capture for those situations with bi-facial panels. The reports makes for interesting reading. As this is in the tropics, East West install, is the general rule. Best wishes all.

In Puerto Rico, the optimal direction to place solar panels is facing true south to capture the most sunlight throughout the day. As for the angle, the general rule is to set the tilt of the solar panels equal to the latitude of the location. Puerto Rico is located around 18° north latitude, so the ideal tilt angle for solar panels is approximately 18°. However, for slightly improved performance during specific seasons: For maximum production in winter, increase the tilt by about 15°, making it around 33°. For maximum production in summer, decrease the tilt by about 15°, making it around 3°. For a year-round balance, sticking to a tilt close to the latitude (18°) would be the most efficient setup.

Glad to see you finally got a blade for that weed eater. It's a game changer when it comes to heavy brush and sapling trees. I'll be using mine in a week or two for the backside of my pond dam. Remedy mixed with diesel works very well for killing those sapling stumps. Just have Kristen go behind you with a bucket of the stuff and a brush and paint the mix on the freshly cut stump.

I love your dress and necklace, your a hard worker and willing to learn. Your trying to over come all the problems that come with raw land, that's why I tune in. Puerto Rico is mostly sun so I will give you a heads up, pole mounted solar racks with a solar tracker will give you up to 40% more power. More bang for your bucks $$$, keep the videos coming, great job.

Great video! If your solar panel angle won't be adjustable, a 28° to 30° angle might give you the best year round results in Puerto Rico. Good luck with the Solar, it can be a big ole can worms~

Good move to avoid excesive soil erotion... you might benefit by droping lawn seeds to cover the soil and avoid having too many dificulties during maintanace just moew with a tractor every 12 days. If you put the solar panels high enough you can take advantage of the shade to plant not full sun varieties.....Your plan is solid and well excecuted keep doing your thing and take advantage of the good and positive comments. The crunchig sound of the cabrita is so cool... Gracias mi gente.

Whatever parallel you are at add 12° if you’re in the northern hemisphere, facing south. Victron is a good inverter and their charge controller, easy hook up and simple. I like Victron because of the Bluetooth that allows you to check things out on your phone. Good luck guys! I’m doing the same thing in NE Washington. 🍀

Hey Matt, just to let you know, I purchased a saw type blade (more teeth than what you have on yours) and a blade that actually has a chain saw tooth set for my weed eater. The later will cut through 3" trees if you're patient with it and the blade does excellent on vines and brush. Main thing is that you use it on a straight shaft weed eater. Just FYI.

You're 1000% correct my family has been doing this for many many many many many many many many many years and unless you hit like chain link fence then some Sparks fly but other than that as long as it's securely attached I think your worst problem will be is having to replace the blade

Most folks that live in the South West USA know this and we use things as big as table saw blades. You have to be careful, but oh man do they do the job! Handle Bar equipped line trimmers are much easier to handle when using circular saw blades.

Solar comment. My preference would be for a 2 axis tracking array. It will provide power in the morning when battery bank may be at its lowest. Also check when clouds usually form which reduce solar performance- in the tropics the morning is usually cloud free while the afternoons can be cloudy, meaning your best solar performance will be in the morning. By 2 axis tracking, I do not mean the well known pole mounted system that can handle maybe 800w of solar panels. Here is my 2 axis design thoughts. Imagine a large array on wheels that pivots around a post located at the back center of the array. The wheels support the array as it moves, the wheels ride on curved cement paths and one of the wheels is motor driven and controlled by an inexpensive 2 axis solar tracking controller with a sun position device and hooked up to a 12v battery. This provides the E/W tracking- starts the morning facing due E, follows the sun during day, faces due W at sunset, then. per controller settings, the motorized wheel moves the array back to due E waiting for morning. The N/S movement of the array could be done by powerful 12v linear actuators. Let's say 6 large panels on part 1 of array have the N side of array (S side is hinged or elevated center horizontal pole with pillow blocks is pivot for N/S movement) lifted or lowered based on sun's position. Another 6 panels on part 2 has its own linear actuator, hooked up to the same tracking controller. System also has a wind speed indicator that would make panels go horizontal with high wind, like 20mph, that is programmed into controller. Such a system using 12 400w panels would provide 4800 watts of PV power, or 6x the power from the well known pole mounted 2 axis system.

Okay let's do this First off solar panels can be run in series or parallel You need to run as high voltage as your system will allow this will save you a lot of money on copper wire I have learned a lot from DIY solar power with Will Prowse
