You built a Cadillac chicken tractor. Now perhaps some EMT pipe along the bottom edges and poultry fence the pasture you are using. Even Pete at Just a Few Acres had racoons eat a whole tractor of chickens. He went to the electric poultry fence. You can add hot wire to the cage but it is a hassle. I also like the PVC roller at the back inside wall to keep from "steamrolling the chickens" who are not that bright at first, especially helpful if you have lots of chickens in the tractor (more than 1.5 sf per bird). I like the cheap solar porch lights on the tractor corners. Bob

Thanks for the tips. I’ll keep an eye out for raccoons but I haven’t seen one since we’ve been here.

I watch Just a few acres farm...they only showed one episode with the huge raccoon, but Pete did say in another videos that they caught raccoons. and their chicken tractors were in open fields, raccoons 'traveled' to get to the cages!

Yeah, we built the chicken tractors and didn't like for a couple reasons. 1. Too many injuries 2. Getting the birds out at butcher time is a messy job. We now use hoop coops that Jason from Sow the Land uses, which are a lot more convenient and comfortable for the chickens and us.

Its something that has crossed my mind. These have worked out really well this year and we haven't lost any (outside of when we had some farm help we lost one) and they all seem to be doing well. If that changes in years to come we may switch to something else.

Throw some Cuban oregano in your water. It'll keep down the algea and gives them a microbial boost.

Dolly - use a 2x4 at length needed to tilt back dolly and raise coop....metal tape or string/rope to center vertical on dolly to allow rotation....rope at back end tied above to keep back from dropping...longer rope to coop end ....draw bridge style....raise up to remove - drop to place against coop......thus is temporary...weld on a hinge if you like it....keeps from having to build a full rig

I have an idea for some easy on and off wheels on the back that I will do this winter when we don’t have birds in them.

Thanks! We had a couple nights right around 40 then a couple in the upper 40’s. High 50’s last night and the next two then into the upper 30’s. All over the board lately.

@@TriStarHomestead Im in SE pa and we have tons of them, maybe you guys don't have them like we do, not sure. Those sons of guns got into the peacock cage too and I had chain link fence about 8" under the ground. The peacocks just flew up in the perch but the fox ate the eggs. I don't have the peacocks anymore though, they sort of came with the land when I bought it but they were loud annoying birds. The old owner used to breed them and sell them but he was about 90 years old so when he sold he left them all there. I just let them go eventually and tore down the cage, one of them hung around for a few months but he eventually left the property. I saw someone post pictures on facebook of one of them about 10 miles away walking across the street asking if anyone had lost their peacock. Lol.

I do not know much about chickens, why are they missing feathers?
@TriStarHomestead
@TriStarHomestead Жыл бұрын
Good question. In this video the birds we only three weeks old so they had not grown all their feathers yet. Currently at just shy of eight weeks they are fully feathered and have been for a while. The cornish cross bird doesn't seem to grow feathers the same as most heritage birds as well. They are bred for growth speed and production so they are a little different.
