Today we moved our heritage pigs from the dry lot where they have been to a pasture using electric fencing. One of our sows was in heat and met our boar for the first time... Stay tuned to find out what happened!!
In the part of the video in which I make reference to the First Nations as being a term used in British Columbia what I meant was in Canada, not just BC.
First Nation is a term used to identify Indigenous peoples of Canada who are neither Métis nor Inuit. This term came into common usage in the 1970s to replace the term “Indian” and “Indian band” which many find offensive. First Nations people includes both status and non-status Indians so there’s a need to careful with its usage, especially if in reference to programs that are specifically for status-Indians.
Can:
Use to refer to a single band or the plural First Nations for many bands
Use “First Nation community” is a respectful alternative phrase
Use instead of “Indian” when referring to an individual.

In the part of this video where I refer to 'First Nations' as being a term related to the aboriginal peoples of BC, what I meant was it is a term related to the first peoples of Canada, not just British Columbia. Because we have viewers from all over the world who may not be familiar with these terms I've added a definition below: 'First Nation is a term used to identify Indigenous peoples of Canada. This term came into common usage in the 1970s to replace the term “Indian” and “Indian band” which many find offensive. First Nations people includes both status and non-status Indians.'

Somehow, I missed this video. Worldwide First Nations issues are near and dear to my heart. It's distant, but I have Cherokee blood on my mothers side, and endangered Scots Gaelic and Irish there, as well. Cultural sovereignty, especially language preservation is a major branch on my personal Tree of Life. I want to help preserve *all* local culture, but don't want to intrude. I was a programmer for 30 years, and love languages. Databases were my specialty. I'm trying to preserve Scottish Gaelic on Uicipedia. The First Nations in this part of the world seem angrier, but more empowered than anywhere I have known. I wish I knew how to connect, but I've bumbled every introduction but one in Neah Bay. I'm a writer, and wish to be inclusive, but not disrespectful. I've asked, and had no reply to any question. Anyway, blessings to you and yours.

Thanks! I love watching animals 'talk' like that. I'd like to learn to understand what they are 'saying' - I think doing that will make me a better farmer.

The use of polybraid electric fencing or electric bungee gates makes it easy for hogs and pigs to see when the electric is no longer in place and it is safe for them to move across that area.

Such personality the pigs have, that was very comical, I can see why you enjoy them! So cute to see Sybil and Larry sweet talking each other between the fence! :)

Nice video presentation on the porkers. Nice job and necessary to weed whack the grass along the electric wire! I had to put a sheet of plywood over the "line" and then our pigs would cross it so funny to see you also dealing with the demarcation event. Great to see them on the grass too. We had a "rent a hog" program where we took two gilts over to tend our friends garden and they cleaned it out in no time of growth and tilled it to boot! Love seeing the kids involved in the process. Will try to find and send you a video of how we moved our pigs with s mobile pen if I can. Keep up the living of the homestead dream!

Thank you! I am trying to have a bit more fun with the videos. The type A in me is a bit too worried about editing and it can take the fun out of it all pretty quickly... I think I might try vlogging in the next few weeks and see how that goes.

Nettles and lambsquarters are both excellent vegetables. They are not an aquired taste, but are delicious with butter and salt. They can also be substituted for spinach in a quiche, or any recipe. Lambsquarters can also be included in salads. Stinging nettles are sometimes eaten raw, but one must know how in order to avoid being stung. Cooking removes the 'sting'.

Chelsea, thank you so much for sharing!!! We are looking into getting a pig or 2 down the road and the hot wire fencing is the ticket I think!!! Wish we had the wild edibles down here in east central MS, that's pretty awesome................Dan

Hi Dan - Pigs are awesome! Out of all the livestock we raise I think I like them the best... Electric is the only way to go in my opinion, plus it helps that it's an inexpensive option.
@IslandExoticsHomestead
@IslandExoticsHomestead 7 жыл бұрын
Dan, In dryer climates you will want to be sure your ground stake is kept good and wet or the electric fencing will not keep them in! Plus with pigs you will need to do daily checks to ensure they haven't covered your elec fencing with dirt or again it will not shock them and they will get out. Pigs are curious creatures and love finding adventures out of their pen if they get a chance! Good luck!

We weren’t expecting pigs- the first one just showed up and moved in. So their current 10x10 pen is a chain link dog kennel with a shelter, it’s about 75’ from grass access. It’s under tall pines. I get the hot fencing thing but wondering how to move them from pen to pasture. Almost like I’d have to crate them which would be drama 😁.
@LittleMountainRanch
@LittleMountainRanch 5 жыл бұрын
Yup, that wouldn't work well. The best way to move them is to make a hot wire run from where they are to where you want them. You can buy portable fencing that works really well.

are you leaving them on pasture at night and if so, how do you protect them? If not, how do you get them to move back to their pen? We have our first two young pigs, one just showed up and moved into an empty pen, so we bought another to keep it company. Just learning about pigs. Thanks!
@LittleMountainRanch
@LittleMountainRanch 5 жыл бұрын
They have access to their pasture all the time, but they like to be in a shelter at night so they come back on their own. I would suggest keeping them in a small area with their shelter initially until they are well trained to it - this shouldn't take more than a week or two. Then, start letting them out on pasture with access to the smaller pen with their shelter and they should go right back in there at night and you can close them in if you want to. We have Livestock Guardian Dogs to protect our animals so we don't have predator issues.

May i suggest wooden gates work way better were u wanna move them between pastures
@harvestvillage695
@harvestvillage695 3 ай бұрын
That's what we have found to work well. We will use wooden pallets. When you remove the pallet they will go through right away. Not so with removing the poly wire, they think the shocking power still exists where it did before.
