I just returned from visiting both Bilbao and San Sebastián. Very different cities and experiences. The beauty of San Sebastián was mind blowing. Being a life long admirer of Eduardo Chillida and seeing his foundation, just a few minutes outside of San Sebastián, was nothing less than a spiritual experience. Don't miss visiting this area.

Bilbao is not the capital of the Basque Country. However, it is the biggest city in the said region / community. Vitoria is the "de facto" capital city of The Basque Country. The Basque Country comprises of 3 provinces which are: Bizkaia (Capital City: Bilbao), Alava (Capital City Vitoria) and Gipuzkoa (Capital city: Donostia / San Sebastian).
@oskarobit7 ай бұрын
Not close to accurate dude. Gasteiz/Vitoria is the official capital of the autonomy; the seat of the Basque Parliament is located there. Bilbao is considered by some people the "de facto" capital for its population and in terms of its turnover and business network, and now also in terms of culture/tourism. In the other hand, after Francoism Spain was divided in autonomies with no so much fortune. The Basque Country is historically between France and Spain. In Spain, it comprises the autonomous regions of Euskal Herria (‘País Vasco’) (Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba) and 'Navarra'. In France there are three more provinces: Lapurdi, Nafarroa Beherea and Zuberoa.

I found that groceries, eating out etc. are quite similar to Asturias. Rent, however, is much higher and it takes some time to come across a good deal. Higher wages compensate for that though, so you can give it a go and see how you like it! Good luck!

Hello! It's not the cheapest in Spain, nor is it the most expensive. At least not as expensive as living in Madrid or Barcelona. You also have a wide range of hotels, hostels and tourist accommodations and you can get a set menu of the day from 12 to 20 € which includes a starter, main course, dessert, bread and drink. Visit us whenever you want, everybody's welcome!

@@oskarobitHow hard would it be to find an apartment in Bilbao, as a remote worker with non-Spanish income?
@oskarobit Жыл бұрын
@@mostly_water I suppose you must do a search for the legal aspects of living outside your country while working for a company, or as a freelance, in your country. The regular facts that I know is that you can just stay for a limited period of time, let's say, as a tourists. But the terms for renting are out of my knowledge. When I was working outside my city, and sometimes travelling through Spain, householders can ask you for a "trabajo fijo" (a stable job) and one or two "nominas" (the monthly sheet with your salary). But this things can be considered ilegal today for the actual Laws about Privacy and Data Protection. I think the usual is to pay one month in advance and a deposit of one or two more monthly payments. Also, the prices in cities like Madrid are absurdly high: for the price of a room in a shared flat you can pay a small apartment for your own in other smaller cities. Warning: Smaller cities doesn't mean bad, old or without the basic services. Cities in the north like Bilbao or Vitoria are at just 5 hour in high velocity train or driving to Madrid. Public transport is very good at least joining big and regular cities. take a look at this web, Idealista: www.idealista.com/alquiler-viviendas/bilbao-vizcaya/con-pisos/

As of 2024, Barcelona is the most expensive place in Spain to rent an apartment, by a considerable amount in terms of price per square meter. I've been contemplating a move from Barcelona to Bilbao and this was the first thing I noted. Costs for other things - food, utilities, transportation, etc. - is comparable. Obviously your heating costs will be higher than in Barcelona, but you pay more for air conditioning in Barcelona. So it sort of evens out.

It's the 21st Century, and Spain has had its era of Monarchies and Dictatorships. Simply thinking out loud, it is not my business, I'm an American, Irish American, and I've yet to visit the area, but really desire to do just that. Basque Country is a cultural term which includes Nafarroa/Navarra and Iparralde (Northern Basque Country/Pays Basque). Yes, Bilbao is the biggest city, economically the most important and capital of Bizkaia, one of the provinces. Vitoria-Gasteiz is the administrative capital of the "Basque Autonomous Community", an administrative entity inside Spain. Pamplona-Iruñea is the Historic capital of the whole *Basque Country* as such and will be the capital city when we get our independence. I'm sick of the use of our nation's name for marketing purposes leaving half of the nation out. Gora Euskal Herria Askatuta.

@adhur9 Жыл бұрын
