Geraldine is crazy talented and a natural communicator. She's also a lovely person. I hope someone in the entertainment business would discover her and give her some sort of a travel TV show.

I enjoyed this interview. Thank you Geraldine & David. Staying beyond the 3 month visitor visa is a real issue. Does David have citizenship? Are there any specific routes that artists can take to stay beyond the 3 months? btw, I'd freak, stuck in an elevator for a couple hours.. ;)

The anecdote at the beginning about the pronunciation of "L'appart" by "English speaking" people Is very sad, tragic, and egregious. It is actually poor or a lack of communication skills, but not on their part... those non-French speaking people should be shown or taught on how to pronounce the word (not perfectly) but as close as possible. The 2 syllables sound in "L'appart"do exist in the English language, e.g., La and Par. So letting those "English speaking" people pronounce it "Le Appart" is wrong and shocking, especially when it is the name of your project.

I am a Vietnamese man. I learned French when I was 6 years old with French teachers. Therefore, I am capable of communicate with French people whenever I travel to French, but only with the French , who cannot speak English, these peiple are patient in listening to my effort of expressing myself, then I found myself eventually engaged in a conversation without toil. Au contraire, when I start speaking French with whom Engish is their second language; they seemed to be impatient with my speed of speaking flow, and then they flippled to speak to English to me continuing with the conversation. Then, I have no chance of practicing my French. Pas de grande chose! I wiil find the book L’Appart de Mr. David … Merci beaucoup Géraldine.

David's use of the Latin based word vulgar when speaking of 'Socca' is I believe off the mark here. Vulgar in English usually connotes coarse or crude or tacky or lowbrow; whereas from Latin = common: such as the botanical description of the herb Thyme: thymus vulgaris simply meaning common thyme as opposed to lemon, or variegated leaf, etc. Therefore 'Socca' a food usually sold on the street as common, i.e. well known and widely eaten and recognizable to all the local inhabitants of Nice, for example.

Oh, I want to speak just a few more words and phrases but I worry it will slow down the flow of conversation. I have quite a few words but putting them together the right way, ewww! Pronunciation is also fine but still gets muddled in trying to put words together in a sentence! Merci, Géraldine for your efforts at teaching us to give it a try. Cheers et à bientôt.

I'm a chef & a sommelier and worked at a wine shop way back when David was at Chez Panisse and now I live part-time in Paris. I still haven't been privy to the good treatment that his American friend enjoyed, I see side-eyes and heavy sighs and Parisians can be rather intolerant of not only foreigners but also with each other. As a tourist here, I didn't care that much about whether or not the woman at the boulangerie counter was friendly or about the impatient honking at every intersection but now that it's an everyday thing, it can be wearing on one's constitution. Learning the French language is so important but it's not easy...food is one of the best ways to begin that journey.

Actually, a language is best learned within the context of the culture. You get a deeper understanding of the verbal exchange if you understand the cultural context around it. But since this was focused on American experiences in Parisian culture, you might not have found it terribly interesting or useful (assuming from your name you're from a different culture.)
