mighty to see that little has changed in 35 years ,,,,,, i spent 3 months cleaning out sheds and clipping hedges when i was sent to a "master" farmer as part of the "green cert" all those years ago .....he farmed me out to his brothers to do their sheds also ......was over qualified to use a 4 grain fork on my return home he got bed sores while i was there !!!!

This video makes so much sense to me, the getting behind sometimes and then you do one hard saturday of mucking out and moving up and everything is so much cleaner and better again. Greets from Holland Tom! (ps, a tobroco giant wheelloader works really good for mucking out the pens. But I know that money does not grow on the trees in farming!)

great to see you got extra help! I was watching sasdutchkid's channel the other day and with their calves, they have a cool method. As one is born and brought to the calf barn it is put in the first pen to the left, then the next one is in the 2nd pen and so on, so when they go to move them they know which are the oldest and it seems to make things go real quick...just something I thought I'd pass on.

Hi Tom, another great vid. I’m an ex Harper student (2003) milking 2100 cows in Methven NZ with my twin brother on two 60 bail rotary units. We rear 600-700 calves each year and would be very keen to give an ag student in the UK the chance to experience calf rearing as well as general dairy farm work on our place. Calving kicks off in mid July next year and work would run until mid October or later if required. We can pay for their flight over and provide accommodation. There is also the option to continue work for a silage contractor November onwards or go traveling. Does Will or Henry know anyone or two who might be keen for that position? Keep up the great work!

@@TomPembertonFarmLife i did more off that than tractor driving. Well did loads loader work and tractor driving. We had a j.c..b telly handler and a Murlow. Have to say sorry about my spelling. When you are on the farm from 8 years old didn't do much school. Just couldn't get anuf off the farm work. Running sheep cows . And pigs. And Turkeys at this time of year. Do the farming in the day then killing turkeys at night until 12 at night. Go home get bit off rest and be back at 6.am do it all again. But u got to get on the fork and get in to it keep fit. That's one thing u don't have to pay for when you do that on the farm. But that's the only thing you get free. L.o.l

So as someone who has no family background in agriculture but would love to get into it. Would the lads recommended ag based colleges/courses as a way of getting involved in the agri community?

Adam Hession yea I think so means you’ve got some knowledge on the industry but there will be farms out there that would still be happy to teach you

I would recommend reaseheath, they do an agriculture course at multiple levels (a level equivalent aswell as uni) they have a working farm with cows, sheep and pigs and great welfare standards.
