I feel like the fact that Halifax has a considerably low vacancy rate,high rent etc needs to be addressed. If you have money then its no issue but if you are working your butt off and just making ends meet, I wouldn't recommend it.
@jonisthebest99
@jonisthebest99 4 жыл бұрын
People working to make ends meet realistically aren't in a position to consider moving to a new city. Halifax's cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada is very reasonable. It's also the central hub of Atlantic Canada so most companies HQs are in Halifax. Tons of great job opportunities in Halifax if you have the experience and expertise.

I was born and raised in the Halifax area, to Canadians looking to move. Halifax has a lot to offer depending on how you want your lifestyle. First and foremost Halifax is the 11th largest metropolitan area in Canada. We'll likely have a population around 480,000 for 2021. We'll be the next city to break half a million for sure in Canada. And that is because in the last five years was only when Halifax started seeing significant growth. For the most part the city has handled it well, and there are some very exciting projects happening. Jobs definitely don't pay the same compared to the rest of Canada. And you pay more taxes with the less money you'll be making. And finding that nice job can definitely take some time. But there is never a shortage of labor and service jobs to get noticed. But the climate is very nice compared to other Canadian cities like Montreal or Toronto. We have the ocean, rolling hills and mountains. I don't want to be anywhere else.

Lots of positives in the video, and all true. But anyone thinking of moving to the HRM should be aware: NS has low wages and high taxes compared to the rest of Canada. Even with the high taxes the city's infrastructure, development, public education and health care system are far more inferior and behind other Canadian cities. Tuition is also the highest is Canada. The cost of food, energy, consumer goods and entertainment are the same cost or more expensive than other parts of Canada. Un-employment is usually high, and opportunities are limited to certain industries. Know the pros and cons before you decide if HRM is right for you. Good luck!

@Apathygrrl 4 жыл бұрын
@ashraf taqatqah Winter can be very bad. You need a pair of very good winter boots. It can be very icy so you need to be careful when walking or driving. But it can also be very beautiful. Many people go ice skating, sledding, or play ice hockey. There is a place in the commons where you can go ice skating for free if you have your own skates, and you can rent skates if you don't have any.
@kimhesketh2016
@kimhesketh2016 4 жыл бұрын
@ashraf taqatqah Being cold is a relative sensation and you don't have to suffer it. If you are coming from a warmer culture then your body has adapted to stay cool so you will feel colder than those that have lived in cold temperatures their whole life. If you want to develop cold temperature tolerance in your body take a few minutes of you daily shower and lower the temperature to full cold. Your body will strengthen its natural ability to heat itself and you will not find it so cold. You can actually go swimming in the winter if you want to.

I went to university in Halifax back in the 90s and visited frequently for years afterwards with work. I'll always love that place, it gave me some of my very best days (and nights!). The locals are generally more than a little awesome, food is great, it punches WAY above its weight in terms of nightlife and just has this super-fun-yet-relaxed maritime vibe. Best time to go imho is early September. It's still warm, you still get all the cruise ship activity, military/navy ships coming in and out all the time and the university students all come back. For a small city, it is always buzzing with life at that time of year, it's really great.

I have always loved Halifax and if I had not moved west in my youth I think that it would have been my choice as a Maritimer to live. Being one of the oldest cities in the Maritimes and a port city gives it a charm that is very enticing. It also has a great nightlife scene partially due to the high number of Universities found within its borders. As mentioned compared to other cities in the Maritimes the weather is pretty temperate. At Christmas time, they have a 50/50 chance of having snow. Of course like all things that could be achangin. That being said, Over the years I have visited Halifax many times and have never found that the cost of living here was all that cheap. Even compared with cities two or three times the size in Canada. Jobs were tough to find and the pay rate was very low. Plus because of the high student population, rental accommodation has always been tough to find and expensive. I had a friend who had to move to another university in another province after not getting in the residence at Dalhousie because the cost was so high outside of the university. That same person returned as a professional bought a house and rented the top floor of the house out to university students. He easily covered the cost of his mortgage and then some. What was interesting he never had to advertise a vacancy. All he had to do was place a sign in his front window and it would be filled within days. His central location was also beneficial.

I've been here for 2 months (from Montreal and Toronto). Here's what I noticed the most. 1. Steep hills. VERY steep hills. 2. Being by the ocean, the wind is no joke. I promise you, I had a hard time breathing in it and my 115 lbs almost blew right into the street. This was the downtown core by the ocean. 3. A "small town mindset" is to be expected by people who live here but don't get out of the city much. 4. Beautiful ocean or nature views, anywhere you go. 5. I notice people don't smoke cigarettes as much here. The incentive to stop is probably the $18 a pack compared to $8-10 in Toronto lol. 6. I Never heard the term "Donairs" until I came here. Turkish. Basically a gyro. 7. The pay scale here is SO low. If you're used to good pay elsewhere, don't expect that here. I learned the hard way. 8. Lastly, there is almost NO housing available. Most availabilities are rooms and some are sharing with someone else. Be very wary of that. I'm a city girl and I don't feel like I would stay much longer. However, Covid is going on and its Winter, so I'm interested in seeing what the city is like without snow and in full swing!

Halifax seems like the most ocean cities in Sao Paulo State, in Brazil. Small cities, nice people, slow rhythm (in a good way) and a vibrant life at summer. For sure, Halifax seems like a city where I'd love to live, to escape from a chaotic city like Sao Paulo. Yes, the state and the city has the same name, like New York. BTW. Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes I miss NS. I grew up there and used to live in Halifax at one time. Unfortunately, there's no money to be made due to the lowest wages in Canada unless you have a govt job. Whatever you do earn, be prepared to give half it to the govt in various forms of taxation. Even selling/buying a cheap second hand vehicle will fork over 15%. That said, what he says about culture is spot on. It is possible to overlook the low wages and high taxes and move to small towns and make a decent living and be happy if all you want to do is exist. The population doesn't grow because the economic conditions set by the govt forces young people to leave, and this has been the trend since the 1960's. Also, the healthcare system is also a bottom feeder. Taxes are the highest Services are the lowest Wages are the lowest And, I didn't even mention fuel prices.... And, I also forgot the nation's highest air fares for travel. On a positive, it would be a fantastic place for an off-grid lifestyle.

NO WAY! I moved to Halifax 3 years ago from Toronto and it is freezing all year rainy and dark. Such a big difference in weather, its a damp cold which feels so much colder and with no sun shine even more cold. Rain, I lived on Vancouver island for 10 years and thought I knew rain, nope, Halifax rains all year, no need to ever water the grass as it will never turn brown. Also Halifax home heating is a major issue as it can be cold almost 12 months of the year making for a big yearly heating bill, summers will be so cold in the morning you will run heat and hot in the evening with humidity. Summers are late and short starting in mid July and ending in early September. There is a reason you see people is sweaters all the time here, with the high cost of heat stores are always cold and people keep their jackets on. People here are used to the weather and know nothing else so its normal for them, but if your not from the maritimes get ready for lots of rain, no sun and cold all the time, even in buildings.

I lived in Halifax for almost 3 years; beautiful scenery and friendly people. But it was too quiet for us; not a lot going on, employment was very tough- its very nepotistic. A lot of Nova Scotians have never left the province, never mind the country, and its about who you know, not what you know. Taxes are high and options are less than you;d find in almost every other province. The economy struggles, so there’s higher unemployment. I loved the scenery there, and it’s probably a nice place to visit, but I couldn’t live there again.

You are exactly right, it's not "what" you know - it's "who" you know in order to get a job in Halifax, or if you're one of Trudeau's migrants. I was in a well known international retail outlet store just the other night and not one of the employees were Nova Scotian, let alone Canadian. Many Nova Scotians are unemployed, but foreigners are employed?

Cool to hear your story. Halifax is as good as it gets. This video encapsulates the culture and what you can expect very well. People are friendly, food is fantastic and the scenery doesn't get much better for a city environment anyway. Halifax is the center of the Atlantic provinces in Canada and thus most major businesses centralize in Halifax so for a skilled worker the job opportunity in Halifax is very promising. I hope you chose to move here! We'll be happy to meet you 😁

I really enjoyed this mini tour, thank you. Looks very nice indeed. I don’t mind the east coast weather having grown up in New England. When it is sunny or cloudy, it’s glorious. I do miss the varied climate near the ocean. Rain or clouds for me inspire thought and creativity. Makes the sunny days seem even more delightful. -It’s not for everyone, but it’s a good match for me. I’ve been to Halifax and Dartmouth many times…driving around, on Google Earth that is. LOL. I like NS in general. A lot of beautiful places there. Would you do a review of little towns like Wolfville and the north areas, and possibly Antigonish pls. I need to bring the family and visit soon and see all it in person. I’ll likely start in Halifax or PEI . This vid helped highlight some of the things that I already suspected. Nice! Cheers.

When I first moved to Halifax in 2017 there were a few huge missing things I noticed besides being a tiny city: No Uber service, NO stadium (not talking about a hockey arena that here is 40 years old) and no subway metro service. Lots have changed, but of those I mentioned only Uber came in. Housing is the main problems now, encampments are over the city. Basically there are 4 sources of work in Halifax: Healthcare, Tourism, shipping docks and teaching at the Universities. But I would not recommend moving here unless you don't mind these things.

Very information video. A lot of correct information except for no.7. Nova Scotia is not that accommodative to International student. As an International student it is hard to secure gainful employment after graduation and a large majority of International students migrate to greener pastures. Be it Toronto or Calgary. The Government noticed this and saw the need to establish the AIPP(Atlantic Immigration Pilot Programme) which is geared at helping students whom graduated Universities/colleges to stay and secure residency. I myself love Nova Scotia because as the presenter states the small town feel and the friendly people.

The summers are definitely warmer in Toronto but the winters are milder in Halifax and Halifax is not subject to the extreme temperatures that Toronto gets. I found Toronto winters to extremely cold and all the tall buildings make it worse. Halifax gets more snow due to no' easters but not usually very much until January. However if you here for our record breaking bad winter a few years ago that would skew your perception. That was wicked.
