Very happy to have found your channel. We live aboard in BC but are selling our sailboat to build on a lot we bought in NS and are very excited about the move. This has been incredibly informative about winters. I also love winter (spent 3 years in ON as a child) and after more than a decade on a sailboat, we feel prepared to design our home for all situations. Parts of Brittish Columbia and Nova Scotia have the mildest winters of all the Canadian Provinces. Winter temperatures are moderated by the ocean so Nova Scotia winters are for the most part mild . The downside of Nova Scotia winters is damp cold which feels colder than dry cold like out west .

The coast of BC and Vancouver Island experience the damp cold...it's the interior that experiences the dry cold.

I realized with the 3 days of really cold temperatures recently that the younger generations have not had to deal with the -20+ temps here lately, they used to be fairly common but are rare here now excluding wind chill. Keeping pipes from freezing and the water flowing during a cold snap is a lost talent.

I mean, you can't generalize about Canada. Given how massive it is, obviously the whole country won't be a frozen hell. You are living in the Southern most tip. In other words, that's about as warm as it gets. BC is somewhat better (Warmer), but Halifax is a far cry from something like Edmonton. As for liking Winter, trust me, -40 is no fun.
