My daughter lives in Lahaina and I went to visit her and it was the first time on Maui. We arrived at sunset and walked to the banyon tree. The bird's going off was cool. Next morning walked out to Front street and I asked the " Where are we?" Lol it reminded me of Orange County California and Catalina Island. All white faces. Wealthy looking So Cal folk's! Ugh 😩 I didn't want to deal with the type of people that I was tired of looking at on the daily. Came nightfall and Front street shutting down I hear Where you stay brah?!" And other local pidgen conversation. Cheeee hooo! I was like Yesss! How'z it braddah!! 🤙🤙🥰

Really great video. You really explained the differences between the areas. We have a condo in Honokowai, I'm always honest with people when they ask about it. I tell them that if you are looking for a resort feel, this isn't the place. Not that one is better than another, just different. I would hate to see someone spend a lot of money to rent a place and expect something that it's not. If you want to kick back, sit on the lanai and eat the meal you cooked on the grill downstairs, while visiting with locals and other tourists, Honokowai is the place. If you want a swim up bar, Ka'anapali or Wailea is your jam.
@movingtohawaii2 жыл бұрын
How’s your return? I would consider a condo in Honokawai myself.
@tednottodd2 жыл бұрын
We did a 1031 into this condo just a couple of months ago and don’t have a huge mortgage so that takes the pressure off. So far we have it booked solid through June. My in-laws have a place that they have had for over a decade two buildings away and they are booked solid all year. I have been coming to Maui since the mid 1970’s when I was a kid. We love the island and the people.

My first Hawaiian trip was to Maui 30yrs ago. I had no idea what to expect except that it would be “Paradise”. Landing at the airport and then making that drive on Honoapiilani to where I was staying in Kapalua was my first impression of Paradise. The strip malls, the rock nets and the tunnel were not what I was quite expecting…but it felt like Paradise to me nevertheless because I was so excited. When we reached Kaanapali, however, I got even more excited because it felt “greener” and suddenly people were everywhere. By the time I got to Kapalua, my first impulse was to run to the ocean. I had a great time at my friend’s wedding, almost drowning in Napili, golfing on the Plantation Course (I still have the tag on my golf bag today), snorkeling for the first time in my life and seeing my favorite fish the Powder Blue Tang, etc…I’ll never forget that trip.

Bringing more people from the mainland(which your vids are clearly aimed at) to make money from their "real estate dreams in paradise" while saying the kanaka have no where to live is the most hypocritical/disgusting/contradicting thing I've encountered in a while. Keep up the Ambassadors of Aloha vibe you got going on, we clearly see the wool being pulled over our eyes.

@@movingtohawaii require residency of at least 5 years for purchase of homes. These out of state buyers that y’all are bringing here are literally pushing locals out. Even hearing of real estate agents sending pamphlets to locals trying to convince them to sell 🙄 sickening if you ask me
@dawnelliott87942 жыл бұрын
@@serenaalexander2236 that's happening everywhere. It's a seller's market and not enough inventory. People are buying site unseen and bidding war's are making the sellers and the agents more money than they are asking for. Potential buyers are asking agent's to find something in our desired location, etc. Agent's are pounding the pavement and flooding every social media groups in Huntington Beach with every marketing tactic there is. A friend of mine listed his condo and the first day a line of about 15 separate families were lined before his agent even arrived. Condo sold that day for almost $80,000 more than the asking price.
@dawnelliott87942 жыл бұрын
@@serenaalexander2236 I like the idea of restrictions put in place for nonresident buyer's. The one's buying up everything and driving prices at an all time high are the rich out of the country and I'm drawing a blank on the other greedy one's where a bunch of people invest and put their money together and buy up everything. These are the greedy doing it on purpose to own everything and build etc and know that we are at their mercy. That's some sick greed there.

I lived on Maui for twelve years, and have never been on Oahu, except in the airport. I cannot relate how Derek tires to equate everything on Maui to what it is like on Oahu. No body on Maui give too shoots about what is Oahu like.
@movingtohawaii2 жыл бұрын
Your comments really help the channel and Derek appreciates it very much. Thing is, there are plenty of us locals with family and friends on both islands who do have ties to both and get what I’m saying. Also for foreigners (a lot of what Maui is, like you..) before moving to Maui, the more nuance and comparison the better as they’re making their decision. So while you find it unrelatable, in general people get value from our channel. Thanks for the feedback, Hawaiian 🤙🏽🤙🏽
