I am 52 years old and have been living in Kailua for 28 years. prior to that i was born and raised in Waimanalo. My wife is born and raised Kailua her whole life. We love Kailua and don't plan to sell ever. We have been lucky to raise our 4 kids in Kailua. town is walkable and easy to walk to the beach. Alot of people grumble about the tourist but for me, I am good with the tourist coming and spending their money in Kailua. It allows my wife and I to periodically eat at the restaurants. Trust me the locals only will not be able support the shops and restaurants surviving in Kailua.

I'm a bay area native and have family in Oahu...feel I have the best of both worlds at times :). What I see as the main difference is the diversity of cultures. Hawaiian culture is unique and beautiful in its own way. I feel here in the bay I can experience the cultures of Mexico, Africa, Europe, Latin America, etc. And you get a taste of the cultures thru cultural events or maybe just going downtown to a local restaurant. I think especially in today's world, it's especially important for our children to experience diversity. Kailua looks lovely and peaceful...hope you and your fam find your dream home to be as well.

I think I also like Mililani for its higher elevation; which means less risk for flood/tsunami. I wonder what's the official FEMA flood category for Kailua and other areas because it will affect the insurance premium and I think that's something to consider if planning to stay for a long term.

Some of Kailua is AE/AE-F and maybe some VE (the bad ones). Most of Kailua is X and D. Good question. We’ll have it do a video on flood zones

Was out on island for 4 days last month for a friend's retirement party. Becuase our flight out on Monday was delayed... rented another car and drove out to Kailua for lunch at Fatboys and then drove out to Lanikai. On the way back made a stop at Kalapawai Market because of you. Girl enjoyed the entire experience. Thanks for your videos. Really appreciate the local insights.

Kailua is easily one of the top places to consider for anyone that is serious about living on Oahu. What’s not to like? Clean neighborhoods, walkable commercial areas, nice mix of Mom’n’Pop shops with the larger Longs and Whole Foods thrown in, the beach is nice, the location is great to get to Town as well as taking a drive up to Da North Shore, the schools are great, etc…the only real hurdle is the cost, but nice places aren’t cheap for a reason.

Born and raised local boy 4th gen. Grew up Kaneohe and Kailua late 40's through 70's. Four years after wife and I grad UH Manoa we moved to Wa State due to COL and terrible wages, I worked FHB and wife ran an art gallery in Waikiki. Lived in Kailua and loved it, the sleepy Kailua town of days past. When we come to visit home, we go to the Big Island where I went to HS. If we were to ever return, it would be to the BI. Love your videos of home.

It's the opposite for me. While we lived in Washington, I missed everything about the islands versus while living in the islands, I didn't miss anything about the states. One trip a year was good enough for me.

Why Kailua is a little different than Mililani: 1) nearer to town. 2) near to beach 3) different look at every block because it was developed by different developers. Kailua is being redeveloped so have newer buildings and housing like Mililani. Just some things that came to my mind.

A Hard NO for me. If I wanted to move to Kailua I might as well live in Huntington Beach or somewhere on Mainland. I will stay North Shore. And I don’t like that they don’t even try in Kailua to propagate Hawaiian culture, naming their residential neighborhood with mainland type names. And I don’t like Kailua town not paying homage to old plantation Hawai’i and designing and building store fronts that could be anywhere on mainland. Look at Kaua’i, they incorporate old Hawai’I in most of commercial building except for maybe Koloa town.

Lots of Mormons in Kailua and really just all of Oahu. They are stuck up and their kids are typically bullies in school, so something to consider when moving to this area especially with kids

What's not to live in Kailua except the tourists and parking issues? It is like Sausalito. I like it to tegularly escape to it from the leeward side. How about Manawili? house?

I was born in Oahu moved to big island than to California when I was 8 or 9 and let me tell you that although I moved back during my teenage years then back again as a young adult but still I stay here on the mainland and lived in the Livermore/Pleasanton area and I still would get bored because like you say how many times do you actually drive to Tahoe or Santa Cruz or anything like that. For me I would rather live back home in Hawaii and only visit ca.

Thank you for this video. This is one of your subscribers from the mainland Los Angeles. As for me, I own property on the big island in HPP and eventually I would like to build there and move there but I go back-and-forth. The only thing I’m gonna miss leaving Los Angeles is the car coach here here I’m going to miss Beverly Hills Redondo Beach, Torrance, Beach, Palos Verdes Malibu. Yes I can get on the airplane and fly back but once you live on the island you don’t want to come back to Los Angeles well thank you for this video over here in Los Angeles California.🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Kailua town is pretty widespread. The part that you were on, is part of the roadway to Enchanted Lakes and Lanikai. There are other portions that have other things as well as Enchanted Lakes, but where you live and depends on, the person you are as the family grows up. Shopping isn't in Olamana, it's either Kailua town, Aikahi and Enchanted Lakes, so unless you like driving a few minutes longer, that's fine but count the traffic lights and rush hour. Nice versus convenient? Depending on work and the start time, rush hour traffic is considered a factor. Remember Kailua has three tunnels to connect to town, Pali, Likelike and H3. Either has had traffic congestion periodically, shutting down for a while. So, if Mililani commute or Waianae traffic congestion was a nightmare, image the Pali backlogged and accident at Likelike. I grew up in Kailua and enjoyed living there till I married and moved out but if I could afford to live in Kailua, I would, but it depends on the type of person you are. There's Castle Hospital, Medical doctors in Kailua town, dentists, theater, shopping, tennis courts, swimming pools, volleyball courts, basketball courts, indoor gym, beaches, soccer/football fields, skateboard park, Enchanted lakes, paddling. However, night life is town side, but it's got a slow pace of life without having to go to town unless you wanted to.
