Nice, an old farmer gave me a wheel horse 416-8 that had sat rotting in a field for about 25 years. It is a 1980s model. All the rubber, wire harness, and seat was rotted. The gear shifter was broke off inside the tranney. I drug it home and replaced all of the wires, tires, hoses, cleaned out the mice nests and hornets nest. Well I got the old girl running and now she is my daily driver for chores and hauling heavy loads around my property. I also use it for mud tractoring and trail riding.

50 years old and pretty much fired right up. I love old machines that were built by people that cared, and when longevity was more important than profit. It even quit smoking when all the tranny fluid burned off.

gotta love old Kohler flatheads. when I got my 1974 Wheel Horse B-80 it'd been sitting for at least 20 years, and it also had no compression, because the intake valve was stuck wide open; all I did was take the head off, soak the valve stem in oil, and play whack-a-mole for a bit. ran great with a carb and points clean once I put it back together. the deck on mine was also missing, but I ended up finding it four years later at the same property, in a scrap pile under a bunch of 1950's bicycles. somehow all the spindles aren't even stuck!

" it's got a shut off valve" reminds me of when my brother called me and said the gasoline edger wouldn't start. That edger always started on the first pull. So I asked him to check the tank for gasoline. It was empty. What a Dumas my brother always was.

I’ve had 2 of them growing up and they made ALOT OF different ATACHMEnTS and definitely over engendered. That clutching pulley system is on the side of the motor u better have a couple new on hand because they don’t last too long. I’ve even had to push it with my foot to keep attachments/mower deck working. They are just fun to drive around town with my friends when I was 7-9yrs old and the wheel hires kicked everyone’s A$$!!!!

The two reverse gears makes it 8 speed. Those old wheel horses were awesome tractors. I popped wheelies on mine. Originally an 8 hp, I blew the engine and replaced it with a 10. The weak part of mine was the steering. I abused the old thing, but it kept on going. Wish I hadn't got rid of it, but we moved away, and I had no need for it. The John Deere from the Big Blue Box store leaves a lot to be desired.

I have 7 of these tractors from 1967 to 1992 and they are great machines! If you want to keep that nice old patina, clean the tractor really good and then rub it down with boiled linseed oil, she'll look great! You might want to pull that engine cover to make sure there aren't any rodent nests under there. I have found a few in the tractors I got that set awhile.
@garymallard4699
@garymallard4699 Жыл бұрын
i have older Sears/Roper Garden tractors..and the first thing i do is remove the tin ( usually pull engine to make it easier to get them off ) and check for rodent nests ( rarely none in them ) or at least clear the decades of dirt and grass from the cylinder fins ..or oil crud ( dirt/grass/oil sludge ) ...better to cool them from then on than start a fire or overheat....
@danbasta3677
@danbasta3677 Жыл бұрын
I never cared for this linseed oil put on a machine like this or other brans of tractors. I'd rather paint the tractor and have a new paint job on it and keep it washed and waxed and in good looking condition instead of this linseed oil look which makes the tractor look like a pile of junk and a basket case.

A 301 cast iron Kohler has a compression release that you'll think is freewheeling. Will just spin and spin. They're good motors. Good deal. Gravely walk behind and Troy- bilt tillers had them too. 8 horse on the Troy. 301 on the Gravely.

Grew up with my grandfather's 1968 wheel horse raider 10, used to mow the yard until my dad hit a big rock and bent one of the spindles on the deck, scrapped the deck but still have the tractor in the back yard. Yes that lever on the side engages the mower deck, dad used it for spreading gravel with blade that is still there also

Love those old wheely horses. The old koler engines were basicly bullet pruff made many a hot rod tractors out of those red beauties. They never have decks lol out of the 20 or so I've owned over the years I've had 1 deck a few plows and 2 tillers. But best thing about them put big pully on rearend and small on engine if you get it just right they fly. There not at all safe but can be so fun and cheaper than a quad. The way the clutch is on those models makes the speed upgrade so easy. Cool find. Have fun. I need a new 1 think my bro has 1 hiding in the shed may sew if he'll let me play with it for old times sake. We both got 1 when we were like 8 and 12. Dad loved junk still does lol well other call it junk we call it stuff its replacement parts its custom parts it use what you have on hand and get it done. The neighbors hate it until some of it helps them out. Lol. Sorry for the book this sent me down memory lain.

I have a 312A Wheel Horse I brought back from a 20 year slumber last year. It is a great machine I replaced a few bearings cleaned out fuel system and carb and she runs great. The Kohler fuel pump is weak and looses prime so I wired a small electric pump that only runs while cranking the engine the factory pump will run the engine fine but not start it if it sits

Those are very tough tractors, I had one that I Built a front end loader for, and it would take a lot of punishment and come back for more, never once did I burn a belt, That being said , The only weak part was the steering it had a tendency to skip gears When there was too much weight on the front, great video thank you very much

Thanks brother for posting this video! My wife and I bought an old Wheel Horse Raider 12 about a year ago to use for a backyard project. It came with the original snow blade and rear tilt wagon! Awesome tractor, but unfortunately, it sat outside over the winter, and I'm having trouble getting it started this season. This video is helpful, so I'm gonna try to work on it again this afternoon, checking some of the components you tested also. I may reach out if I keep having trouble; maybe you can help lol. -Keith

Way back when I owned a farm (before the divorce), I mucked about with a couple of small tractors like that. One day my neighbour brought his late-1960s, early-1970s Deere 3-cylinder diesel over. It wasn't working well at all. Why he thought I (a software developer and scientific instrumentation developer) could help with his tractor is beyond me. However, they're simple devices--this one used a rotary injector pump, and it became clear that two of the output ports on the injector pump were plugged. Got that cleared up, and it ran great for a while. Then they stopped up again. Pulled the fuel filter apart--what was left of it, anyway. The filter had decayed and was "throwing chunks" into the fuel system. "When did you change this filter last?", I ask, innocently "Never". He got a new fuel filter, we unplugged the ports again, ran fine for years afterwards. Now, the *punchline* of this story? He, like me, was only a part-time farmer. HIs "day job"? Automotive mechanic at the local GM dealer. Something about "the cobblers children....".

I love them old mowers. My father had many. Many many small engines layin around too. All but 1 (was a very early motor) ran. I hear your knee pain. My right one needs replacement, but I'm stubborn. 😄 And the problem with having to use a screwdriver on something only, I've found out pressing on the screwdriver while taking vice grips to the handle to turn it adds alot more torque. You take a chance breaking the screwdriver, but it saves your hands from becoming too sore. And yep......as soon as you said there was no fuel flow, I was saying check for a shut off valve on the tank. My old 68 snapper was the same way. I used to like buying alot of pipe for the exhaust. I've made dual exhaust on those small engines before. Sounded like a motorcycle. Constantly had complaints about it. 😄 I know it's not good for the motor, but it sure sounded mean.

I was working on my wife's Honda Pilot this spring.. poor thing wiped a camshaft (low oil issue) and man, i'm telling you when i got to the coolant section or the rebuild, I about lost a lot of tools with those darn split clamps on the little heater hoses and all.. I spent a lot of time (the police came to check on me) swearing on those clamps. I should've just bought the little tool but i was stubborn about it. Fixed the engine though. edit: watching you say you're going to get some pliers for those darn clamps.. I ended up going to the extreme, I tac welded a cut in half washer on either side of a crappy needle nose.. it lasted like 2 tries but it finally got those darn things back on.. OMG I hate HATE those clamps I'm burning up right now thinking about it!!
