My son and I started off on our detecting hobby with the 340 and 540. We are extremely happy with both of them. We are basically beach hunters and have only searched parks a few times but still had no problems digging up coins from various depths in the land. The only issue we have is that the Vanquish series is not water proof, so that limited our searches in any type of water. A few months back I purchased an X-terra pro for myself and passed my old 540 to my son. Our 340 is for family when they might want to tag along.

I have the opportunity to buy an X-Terra 705 for $169 or a Vanquish 440 for $349 here locally. What are your thoughts on that for a first detector? I have been advised to save more money and buy an Equinox 800, but it is considerably more expensive even second hand. The Vanquish 340 I got cheap on an open box deal is the most amazing detector I`ve ever used. I wish I lived near a beach but I`m now 100% confident I can once again find silver coins. I`ve found a lot of rings before on freshwater beaches when I lived on Toledo Bend Lake on the LA/TX border with a much less capable machine that cost more. My 340 hits on very tiny targets and even detects the 177 caliber BB in my foot! 13 inches on a nickel in air tests with a 10x7 coil is incredible and I`ve seen videos of them hitting silver dimes in the ground at least 9 inches deep! To me these are perfect for the type of detecting I do in rural areas. PS: Gigmaster has had multiple Equinoxes leak.
@mowerdog2 жыл бұрын
I figured it was a good time to sell my 800 because it had some warranty left. The only thing I hate about the Vanquish machines is........Now beginners can afford a high performance detector and are easily reaching and hitting silver usually left for higher priced machines with experienced operators.

It's good to hear another perspective. We all have different priorities and that's why their are so many different products on the market. I started out with a Vanquish 440 and upgraded to the NOX 800 about 6 months ago. I still have the 440 but haven't ever considered going back to it. The NOX just seems to have better discrimination and target separation, plus I don't dig up so much junk with the NOX. I can change the tone settings on the NOX to separate targets which I can't do with the Vanquish and the biggest thing... the NOX has a gold setting.

I`m always very careful about covering every inch in front of me with coil swings. My detector was stolen years ago and 6 years ago I received a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 202 for Christmas. It was so much fun hunting my sister`s yard and finding coins and toy cars again. Then I tested it along the driveway and found a very worn Walking Liberty half dollar. Couldn`t believe it. Without a lot of practice with my Vanquish I`m not sure if I could have found the same coins there because the two times I tested it in her yard I was overwhelmed with endless signals. So I collected a bunch of very very tiny pieces of metal and tested it and saw why. It`s the most sensitive detector I`ve ever used. The Bounty Hunter simply doesn`t see all those tiny targets and falses much less on iron. I did get several signals in the silver coin range with the Vanquish but didn`t dig anything because I was waiting to receive a pinpointer. Now my nephew next door there has a dog that never stops barking so I haven`t returned. Gonna do some hunting in the woods and old gardens/fields/creeks with the Vanquish when I move in a couple months.

I started skipping #1 & 2 because half the targets I couldn't see. That may make it better?

@@mowerdog Yeah, I was running it full blast in all metal mode just to see what would happen. The entire yard was a big beep. I was pulling the coil up several feet off the ground on some targets and it was still hitting them. It`s a very old home site there. Back in the 1970s finding silver was easy. By the mid 1990s it started getting hard to find. I`m gonna start hunting old dump sites in the woods for relics and bottles. Kids destroying property have nearly killed metal detecting in my area. We aren`t allowed to go near the old swimming holes or even boat landings anymore. Gates went up everywhere. I hope to get permission to hunt my grandfather`s old home site in the future. I was more interested in the 540's backlight and more adjustable notches. I don't think you made a mistake in buying the 440. In a perfect world you would be able to chose any coil you want on a detector purchase. If you hunt at night and like to make custom discrimination patterns then you will like the 540 better. But you may find you'll want the 10 coil like me and have to pay more. I guess you could buy the 540 and take the 10" coil off the 440 and exchange it for the 12" coil and sell the 540 as new with the big coil?

I bought the 540 Pro pack and an Ace Apex and I love both machines. The Simplex I wasn't too impressed with. Mine was really chatty and no matter where I was or what I did I couldn't get it to quiet down enough to tell if I was over a target or not so I returned it. I wanted to like it, but maybe I got a bad one I dunno. I am very happy with the the other 2 though. I will also say this, I had an equinox 800 as well and it was a great machine, but I swear to you my vanquish seems to hit deeper targets than the nox did. I never hunt fully submerged so I sold the nox and bought the 2 I have now. Best fully waterproof detector I have ever owned was a Quest Q30. Thing was a beast in the wet and even a really awesome dry detector as well and you can buy one for $300 new. Quests are very underrated here in the states. They even have a new x10 Pro that is $200 and it is crazy good for the price. Also water proof.

Great info. I don't know why but my 540 works much better than the 800 for me. I hate scolling through menus and sub menus to make a little change. I only bought the simplex to have a waterproof fresh water machine. I will take the Simplex out on hunts and compare it with the 540. But we both know I'll be using the 540 99% of the time.

Great vid Mate. I am looking to buy my first metal detector that I want to use for gold prospecting and treasure hunting. I have the opportunity to buy an X-Terra 705 for $169 or a Vanquish 440 for $349 here locally. What are your thoughts on that for a first detector? I have been advised to save more money and buy an Equinox 800, but it is considerably more expensive even second hand. Not much work lately so I am on a fairly tight budget and still considering the 440? Regards, Jas.

@mowerdog2 жыл бұрын
The performance is the same. It's better ergonomically. It weighs much lighter. Better control being an s shaft. Plus the target id is more stable. You'll need an arm cuff pad.
@newriverdiggers58212 жыл бұрын
I have a Box 800 with the stock coil and six inch coil. I also bought a 540 pro pack. Performance is pretty close to the same without all the extra software that I don't use. The pro pack has 2 coils and the same wireless headphones. The only thing about the 540 that I don't care for is the elliptical coils. I bought the 540 as a backup but it's the only one I use. I still get barber dimes at 10 inches with both detectors. I don't want to dig any deeper anyway. And I don't do any water detecting. Hope this helps a little.

Easy is fun. This is why I'm keeping my Vanquish 540. To be honest it probably is 90% of what a high price detector offers with much less to fiddle with. That makes it fun.
@michaelbariso31922 жыл бұрын
The Simplex lacks the depth of the Vanquish due to its smaller 11 inch coil so the the Vanquish has an edge in mineralized soil and separating targets due to its oval DD configuration, but for me I'd rather invest in a different coil for the Simplex than having to live with the annoying slot machine flute sounds and kids toy look of the Vanquish. The Vanquish also has a very noticeable delay in processing speed making it difficult to pinpoint objects similar to the Garrett models making the Simplex a strong contender at any price.
@hund86922 жыл бұрын
Try using the Vanquish without the ML80 headphones and I think that you will be very surprised that the delay in processing that you are experiencing is gone. The delay is caused by the Bluetooth lag.
@michaelbariso31922 жыл бұрын
@@hund8692 The Vanquish lag in target detection speed I'm speaking about is with Bluetooth off, hearing the beeps coming through the machines on board speakers. The Garrett AT Pro models are the worst, once you notice it it'll drive you crazy :-)
