At about 3 mins, the kill switch pictures were not very clear to me but once off the machine I saw there is a 'ramp' on the brake mechanism and the 'switch' has a bent end which is supposed to ride up the 'ramp' to make a connection. Releasing the brake breaks the connection. Once I understood this, a good cleanup of the touching surfaces and a very slight adjustment to the 'bent end' brought instant success. To think of all the wasted time checking the plug, coil and connecting wire! Oh dear but thanks for the inspiration to have a go. BP

You are the man!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, WATCHING THIS VIDEO MAKE ME REALIZE THAT MY KILL SWITCH WAS ALWAYS ENGAGED SO THE CIRCUIT WAS ALWAYS TO GROUND!!! FUC**** YEAH!!!!! I NEVER REALIZE THATH The handle mechanism when you move the lever, the little blade never disenngages ground!!!! I remove the wire from the switch and there you go ! STARTS AGAIN!!!!!! THIS WAS DRIVEN ME NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I check everyting, thousand times but never the kill mechanism. SO BASIC CHECK!!!! I even change the coil and the spark. Thankssssssssssssss!!!!!!!

I got an older mower i think where a green wire goes under the flywheel. Touch the cable stop or ground the green wire should stop it but its not. What does it attach to under the flywheel?

Hi, my 3.5 hp briggs and stratton with pulsa primer, when it starts white smoke comes out of exhaust but stops after about 5 seconds ? could this be i need to replace the piston rings ? also it seems to have lost a bit of power ? it is 9 years old and has never had head and inside de carbonised ? would this help power if i de carbonised head ? So this works because you are removing the fixed ground from the block and relocating it to a ground on the handle to a intermittent ground right? I have a Troy bilt mower I am wanting to do this with and still learning how to work on small engines

hello, very nice video. I own a briggs stratton mower and it was working fine, half way while i was doing the lawn I started the engine but now when I hold the throtte to start mowing the engine is at full speed and it very hard to control it, if i tried to leave idle it will stop but at full speed its not only dangerous but also hard since it vibrates a lot. any suggestion on hot to fix this??? thanks in advance

Hi, my briggs and stratton mower the same as the one in this video, used to start first pull from cold after 3 primes, but now it does not fire at all after 3 primes first pull, but starts after 2nd pull ? this problem started after i changed the oil, it was the proper oil B&S sa30 after tilting to get underneath to remove plug, but i didn't run mower to heat oil before draining old oil, could that be the problem ? any suggestions please ? i put on a new carb diaphram and gasket. thanks Bruce

I don't know about the kill swtch but today Jack and I fixed the throttle cable. It no longer worked. Jack cut throttle cable and replaced it with an 8 inch cable. Hé shifted throttle plate to 3000 rpms with an 8 inch cable...screwed it tight and it runs perfectly. He overrode throttle cable entirely. Infact we just cut it away. I was not convinced! Just jerryrigged whole throttle assembly. It purres. Amazing. He can just look at a small engines and figure out a fix. I never thought about that fix. Couldn't have dreamed about it. I just have to rake his leaves and winterize his yard as trade.He does brainwork. FIXES my old lawnmowers. All trade no money. He is a genius on 4 cycle engines. It took us 2 hours to figure out a fix. I was flummoxed. We froze, but he pontificated it with coffee and cigarettes and he figured it out. Amazing!!! David Alberta

Question? Have a kgro 4.0 hp push mower by k-mart with no spark. Replace the coil and plug still no spark. Shave the rust from the flywheel and again still no spark. I even disconnected the kill switch from the coil itself with still no spark. Any suggestions!🙄

Mower Man, thanks for the reply. My neighbour left me a mower when he moved house, very poor state. Compression was good but started for a very short time, pull cord ripped out of my hand first, backfired and died. I removed all the coverings learned from your videos. I had seen some videos on removing the flywheel without using a puller, I replaced the key, tightened down the flywheel. The engine run for approx 1 min made a clattering noise and stopped again.

Hey Mower Man! I recently purchased a 22-inch self-propelled mower with a 4.5 Briggs and Stratton engine like the one in this video. My bale bar was extremely sticky and the mower doesn't shut off when it is released. Although the mower starts and runs (stuck on lowest idle, will replace throttle cable soon), I removed the small kill switch that you said could be removed with a flathead in the video. However, I was wondering if the small plastic piece can be reinstalled? After re-installing it, my mower doesn't seem to start.

I just checked the compression with a tester no compression now my lawnmower quit on me 😞 I'm on a low SSI check each month barely can afford gas to take my wife to chemo treatment 4 times a month we're in our late 50s she has to take chemo treatments for the rest of her life her chemo therapy is 2hr drive one way 😞... Is there any tricks for no compression on this 502cc 20hp briggs & stratton 2007 model ? 😞

Change the plug first and check the ignition coil wire isn't split. It's rarely the kill switch.
