Dies Irae should be fast...and it is. Never heard more aggresive version. Even the Slovak Ph. Orchiestra does not play it so aggresive. I'm impressed.

Two wonderful things result from this: 1) more proof of Mozart's incredible talent at creating mood. I mean, this song SOUNDS like doom! It's spot on. 2) Bernstein's mastery of emotionally effective conducting. I've seen few conductors who FEEL the music as much as he did. Also, nice to NOT see this piece slowed down.

A legendary figure in church music and the only composer the Catholic Church has ever explicitly endorsed by name. Wow, this is what I call THE performance. Aggressive, loud, fast. Tenors are loud where they should be (yeah!), sopranos are powerful as well, the orchestra is full of dynamic and energy, every single bit sums up into the beautiful whole.

I usually think that Bernstein tended to make things too slow. Not the case here! I just wish that Mozart would have made his sequence a bit more continuous (like Michael Haydn's Requiem) so we could have kept this glorious Dies Irae theme going for a bit longer!
