@Marilyn1122 This was released on DVD in 2005, but the original recording was made in 1971. I was particularly impressed by Walter Berry as most recordings drown out the bass's "Sonum", but he manages to make it come through seemingly effortlessly. I am not sure if he really does the whole phrase in one breath as it is possible to take some air in on the two s's before Sonum, but it looks and sounds seamless. How fortunate that this recording exists, and how good it is for a 40 year old one!

He was Austrian, actually ; I am Frech, and, when I studied Latin at school, I was instructed to pronounce "spargens" "sparghenns", exactly as he does. Some decades ago, I would have been taught to say "spardjenns". What is more surprising is "sepulchra"n which he pronounces "sepulshra", and not "sepulkra" as I would have expected. But anyway... the fact is indeed his astounding breath control (and beauty of voice).
@jzero48138 жыл бұрын
Hard 'g' is the pronunciation used in Classical Latin - soft 'g' is Ecclesiastical Latin. Here each vocalist is using a combination. Hard 'g' in "Spargens" and "Regionum" (Classical), but 'ch' pronunciation (Ecclesiastical) for 'sepulchra' and 'judicetur', for example.
@agurkesalat71297 жыл бұрын
It’s not a mixture of different pronunciations, but the way Germans used to be taught to pronounce Latin (just as French, English, etc. used to have their own peculiar ways to do that).

Here's the translation if anyone wants it: The trumpet will send its wondrous sound throughout earth's sepulchres and gather all before the throne. Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again, to answer the judgement. A book will be brought forth, in which all will be written, by which the world will be judged. When the judge takes his place, what is hidden will be revealed, nothing will remain unavenged. What shall a wretch like me say? Who shall intercede for me, when the just ones need mercy?

@simone qa Actually they're singing in Germanic Latin. When the piece was composed, Italian Latin wasn't the standard. Seeing as Latin was a dead language, every nationality had variations in pronunciation influenced by their own language. Some conductors and ensemble perform works from the classical and baroque periods with the pronunciation it would have had at the time, for authenticity.
