Good posture from the Cellist. Wish I could say that about the principal Violinist. Must have been a boxer in her former life. All that bobbing and weaving. I know they're showing expression in their music. But there is a limit. The Violas were great. K 174 is all time favorite of Mozart's quintets.
@renaudlapierre80919 жыл бұрын
+Brian Swanson A boxer in a former life... because she is a little bit chubby? I am sorry if you listen only with your eyes. You should use more your hears, therefore you would be hearing and seeing her great bow technique! That first violin is a great player. They in fact all are, but for me, the inside voices are almost always hidden and playing a filling role, which I can't stand.

If you would have read it properly. She bobs her head like a boxer e.g. Joe Frazier. I said nothing about her size or weight. Want to see proper position in a Quartet or Quintett? Watch Pinchas Zukermann. And I speak as a teacher, who's played for 3 different Symphonies, in the last 30 years.

Agreed, except for your last sentence. Surely this K515 is the greatest of the quintets, and covers the most aesthetic, emotional, philosophical and logical space of all the quintets. In my opinion, it must be one of the 2 or 3 greatest and all-encompassing pieces by Mozart and, again in my opinion, of any composer. This piece just gives me a total emotional and cognitive workout, in a concentrated time span, that no other piece does. Humour, irony, tragedy, absurdity, conviviality, gemutlichkeit, gambolling, profound musings, emotional aching, the bob and weave of life, exaltation ... It has everything. It is this piece, for me, that shows a massive gap between Mozart and all other composers.

There's a YT of Mozart's 614 Quintet with Alina Abrigimova on 2nd violin and Renaud Capucon on first. That works a lot better. I cannot help but notice that AA hardly ever makes eye-contact with the other players, she's in her own world, while the other players stay in close contact with each other.
@angusmcmillan89813 жыл бұрын
Absolutely wonderful playing of that all-time masterpiece. Sadly the camerawork is too restless and doesn’t show them together nearly enough.
@muslit4 жыл бұрын
Playing outside is a bitch. In the third movement, I think the first violinist could have had a little more presence. I understand it was to highlight the first violist, but there is a statement and answer going on here, and occasionally I could barely hear the first violinist. At times her tone was quite thin. The three pizzicato notes in the cello - the only ones in the entire quintet - certainly could have been louder. This quintet is exceedingly beautiful. And yet, in terms of Mozart's instrumental works, the piano concertos still wow me the most.
@alradart7 жыл бұрын
Wonderful Performance but very unprofessional Video...
@portischarles7 жыл бұрын
First Viola so so beautiful, sweet and strong. Cellist also good. I felt the first violin was good but way too cute and fey, and exaggeratedly staccato which ruined certain moments, or rather, should I say, because this performance was generally amazing, reduced the aesthetic amplitude from 95% to 80% (for instance, the menuet in the 2nd movement). And in the third movement, too much plangency ... lacking air and humour. Mozart's intensity immediately 'burns off' into something else, as opposed to being trenchant. He is not Russian!
@tombristowe8466 жыл бұрын
Wonderful playing, but I agree with some of the comments below about what you might call "antics", of a visual nature. I mean the exaggerated meaningful looks to each other and Miss Ibragimova 's affecting of pained or ecstatic facial expressions. It's not helped by the camera work either.
@prager50464 жыл бұрын
The lady in red is too prominent/pushy ...she is also playing often with too much vibrato...-an fashion way of playing...she makes the whole quintet to a miniature violin concerto...too bad
@casualnova19 жыл бұрын
Having read in their entirety the unabridged and uncensored Mozart's letters, I believe I have come to realize that this 515 string quintet is the epitome of the all well known Mozart's father-son conflict, that is, an aspiring son's first violin, a stern father's cello and pleading motherly violas. This performance, asides, is rather mediocre.

What exactly is your problem? She is one of the most talented young violinists with a successful international career.
@portischarles7 жыл бұрын
Yes, and it's not the movements and expressions - though these are equally distracting and laughable - but that they match her constricted stylistic approach to Mozart that make the more annoying. It is febrile, binary Mozart - either plangently, hysterically intense or fey - missing the enormous middle palate of flowing humour, intelligent conversation, Apollonian whimsy ... She has incredible bowing technique as another poster said, and simply stunning intonation that is close to perfect ... but she has no wisdom or cultured appreciation for the variety of Mozart in her playing. Mozart is natural and rugged ... only on that canvas can his sheer multiplicity and variety of mood truly play out. She needs to listen to Viennese players like Klien, or learn from the other 4 players in this group who may be less famous than her but seem to have a much deeper feeling (esp 1st viola and cellist)
@MrFpam7 жыл бұрын
There may be a skerrick of truth in your very subjective critical comments but it seems to me that you have started off with a negative view of Alina Ibragimova, for whatever reason. I can't help wondering what you really know about Mozart, violin playing or chamber music. There are many sensitive passages, for example in the answering of the cello in the first movement and this amongst others is an example of the intelligent conversation you refer to. Her movements are no worse than those of many other leaders of quartets (or in this case quintets) ,where there is an extra element of leading, almost conducting. It is open to dispute as to whether Mozart is natural or rugged, especially in these intimate chamber works. The description of her playing as febrile, binary, hysterically intense or fey is an extraordinary and unjustified exaggeration. You may not like her playing, and there is no accounting for taste, but to attack it in this dogmatic "febrile and hysterically intense" way, as if it is the undeniable truth, is wide of the mark and inappropriate.
@portischarles7 жыл бұрын
I agree I put my points a bit savagely, but they stand. I have played Mozart in professional orchestras and in chamber music (violinist). She is an excellent violinist, and yes very expressive. She may develop into a great Mozart player but she is not there yet. And, unlike most people, it has nothing to do with her technique - it is an interpretive problem. The old Schnabel quote. For instance, to me Walter Klien is a much greater Mozart pianist than Uchida. More humour and naturalness needed, not ivory miniatures. But this is a question of taste.
