Beautiful! In Germany, we call that instrument "Hackbrett" (Dulcimer). The dulcimer originated in Persia. It has been known there as an important classical instrument (santoor) since the early Middle Ages. From there it travelled to China, Korea and northern India. It is quite possible that the trapezoidal dulcimer has the same origin, as the early instruments in Italian paintings from around 1430, played with two clappers, were rectangular and had only a few strings. First mentioned in Switzerland in a Zurich council book in 1447, it is shrouded in mystery. It is said to have been played at royal courts. Later devalued as a dance instrument and rather despised, it survived mainly in Appenzell and Toggenburg, but also in Upper Valais. The dulcimer was mainly used in folk music. In Eastern Europe it is known as an instrument for gypsies and travelling musicians. The dulcimer is known by various names: Psaltery, salterio, pantaleon, cymbalon, tympanum.

Like a piano, each note has three strings to it, other than in the bass. The British and American hammered dulcimer has two. There are also Isla,ic versions, the santoor, and Eastern European, the Cimbalon.

From the Greek: xylo = wood. The xylophone is comprised of different sized bars of solid hardwood, struck with soft-headed hammers. This is a struck-stringed instrument. I have heard of the dulcimer but could not have put a name to this instrument. My first thought was a zither, but I think the strings of a zither are finger-plucked?

@@mohork Its Cimbalom, also known as cimbaly, cymbalon, czimbalom, zimbalon, or zymbalum, is a fascinating musical instrument with a trapezoidal box on legs, metal strings stretched across its top, and a damping pedal underneath. It was designed by V. Josef Schunda in 1874 in Budapest, based on modifications to existing folk dulcimers in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, the cimbalom is mainly played in Hungary, Slovakia, Moravia, Belarus, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. (courtesy ChatGPT 😁)
