I'm fine with ads as long as 1. There is a limit on how many ads a page can show, and a limit on how much area an ad can cover. 2. There are no personalized ads, and no user data collection, no browser fingerprinting. 3. Ads are vetted by ads providers and ads providers being legally liable for scams using their service. 4. Ad never plays any media, muted or not. Video ads should be limited to video platforms, audio ads should be limited to audio platforms. 5. Hard limit on length of the ad that is proportional to content length itself.

The problem with PPA is not the tech itself, it's that advertisers can just take that data and then continue as before. That an alternative that respect privacy exists doesn't mean the advertisers are going suddenly respect privacy, it'll just end up as another source of data, along with the existing, invasive ones. The only way to realistically change things is unfortunately with government regulations or other heavy handed approaches. If that happens, PPA can be great, but without regulations, it's just another data source.

Samsung should be forced to repair/replace all of the devices bricked by their faulty update, including any necessary data recovery. I'm sure the counter-argument would be that the devices are too old/out of warranty and that Samsung can't be expected to support devices forever but, in this case, that should be irrelevant. Common sense would say it was Samsung's fault the devices got broken, not the users. If someone destroys your property, whether via negligence or malice, you would be expected to receive compensation. On the flip side, if Samsung is not required to provide compensation to affected users, then who's to say that they, or any other company, might not begin to continually "accidentally" bricking older devices into the future? Planned obsolescence, not that it should exist in the first place mind you, should be exactly that: A plan. An expectation of when something will fail, not a deliberate mechanism.

Something to remember is that Firefox isn't the best browser for everyone. I've tried a lot of browsers and Firefox and some forks included, and I don't miss it at all. Currently and for the last few years I'm using Vivaldi, a Chromium based browser. Oh the Horror! But it fit's me very well and has a lot of standard features I need numerous extensions to make up for in Firefox. And even then it's not a perfect copy. One thing I hated about FF was when the browser got updated and suddenly one or several extensions wouldn't work with the new release. No big deal if the extensions could just be updated, but no. distressingly often the extensions I relied on were not updated or even stopped all development so I had to hunt for alternatives. And that was often not fun or rewarding. Even if I found a replacement it would require some change in how I used the browser. No I got tired of that. Way back I was a Opera user, but that was back in the day when they had their own browser engine and it was more compatible with the standards than either Mozilla, Internet Explorer or Chrome. But that ended when they ported the browser to use Chromium and changed the tab handling. Suddenly you couldn't stack tabs and the tab bar became unusable because I had over a hundred tabs open at all times. After a lot of swapping back and forth I found Vivaldi, a browser that worked almost exactly as I wanted though it was decidedly in a beta stage. The reason was that the developers of Vivaldi were people who had worked building Opera before it was converted to Chromium. They recreated a developed version of what Opera used to be before they decided to gank the users. Today I'm pretty happy about this browser and I only use one extension to block adds. That's all I need and compared to the hodge podge I used to make FF somewhat usable that's really nice. Now depending on what happens with Chromium I might have to try to find another browser that fit me, but I'm not convinced FF, or any of the forks is that browser. Oh and that potentially new browser would be hard pressed to handle my total disregards for tabs. Currently I'm well over a thousand tabs open...

The death of Wordpad is *rough.* You don't always want to spool up an overpowered, AI enabled always-online program to just take notes with rich text functionality. And if it's a work laptop, you often don't have the choice of installing LibreOffice or Obsidian.

As someone working in advertisement and an end user.... nobody wants privatised Advertisement.... the end user doesn't really care about the data collected (atleast the vast majority) the ad is still going to be annoying and you want to use an adblock.... and as an advertiser targetted advertisement is just too damn effective.... being able to only show my advertisement to my target demographic (and google and facebook let you be VERY specific about your target demographic) is just much more effective and cheaper than throwing an Ad on a TV Station during some show where maybe 1% of the viewers are your actual demographic It's a nice thought of mozilla and probably great PR considering what google is doing to adblockers.... but it just won't work
@whentheyDАй бұрын
as someone who is an end user... i don't want to see ads, ever. and certainly, my interests are too niche for them to ever be relevant to me. no need to defend the massive overstepping of boundaries by advertisers.
@LoFiAxolotlАй бұрын
@@whentheyD the advertisers themselves know very little about you… I’ll know your age group and income bracket and your rough interest and where you’re from but that’s really it… and those are just googles “guesses” (Facebook is much better at “guessing”) sure might seem intrusive but a vast majority of people just do not care… and it’s actually stupidly easy to get rid of your ad data on Google (atleast in the EU don’t know about murica or other countries) as “tech savvy” (yes twitch and KZbin viewers these days are considered tech savvy) we’re much more likely to be aware of the privacy violation than let’s say our grandparents…. But even if I wouldn’t use an Adblock and I most certainly do… I’d much rather see ads that are as relevant as possible to my interest than not… take Twitter as an example… most reputable brands don’t advertise there anymore and the ads you see are like 90% scam sites… I don’t want to go back to the times when a wrong click can be a key logger or virus
