Things like this make it super clear to me how you can get stuck in a rut with a complex rack, and sometimes all you need is 3 modules to do something awesome. Great work!

3 module challenge has shown me many times you can get music out of a starter system (I'm impatient). Starting with Telharmonic, Toppobrillo filter and SSF dual vca/env thingy... gonna build a couple of voices this way and see how they cross pollinate. Selling fixed synths to do it and not even mad... Two questions... how many wavetable DCOs is too many - I'm confident I can justify a variety of those, haha... and have you ever tried Trogotronic modules? I'm not big on whole voice modules (unless they're not too big and have interesting patch points) but that toob voice looks awesome for drones.
@DivKid7 жыл бұрын
not heard the term wavetable DCO before. DCO usually refers to a digitally controlled oscillator that's analog (Junos, DeepMind etc). Not sure if you can do wave tables with direct voltage control making in a VCO ... food for thought! Anyway ... Glad the 3 module challenge has provided some inspiration for you. I still really love the concept and use it all the time. Building your system as a series of mini sub patches is a wise move, it _should_ mean you get the most out of them all as you go. I find digital oscillators (wavetables or otherwise) have such depth and variety that I don't think you can limit the amount you're willing to have in your system. Build slowly and let that inform your purchases.

I really wish that we could get Matthew to explain more about this patch. The signal flow from the Nano Rand is the most confusing as it's easily the least common module in the patch. Any chance we can get him to at least map out what is being patched into where?
@DivKid7 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I know Matthew likes a little bit of mystery in his magic patching but I'll bring it up. As always we've all got loads to do so probably won't revisit this in an actual show. But ... I'll try my best to look at what's happening and break it down. So here goes ... It looks like he's patched the noise output back up to the S+H input. Then the S+H output is going into the tELHARMONIC degree input. The gate output is going into the D-Gate, this will be random gates and bursts / changing rhythms. The random output is going into the interval control. That looks to be it. tELHARMONIC was in shift register mode rotating notes around it's voices. And I know Clouds was in the looping delay mode.
@DBPawlan7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm thinking about getting a Nano Rand just so I can reproduce this patch. I think that Matthew sprinkled a little magic dust on that patch or something though, so don't like my chances....

Excellent. I've been interested in the Telharmonic for a while after seeing some cool drone videos that used it as the main sound source. Now I'm sizing up my first modules it's back on the radar. But not completely sure about it yet. Very interesting looking & sounding module. Clouds likewise. But I think it's discontinued now isn't it?
@DivKid6 жыл бұрын
Clouds is discontinued but you won't struggle to get one. Some shops have stock still and it's open source and plenty of DIY builders/companies are making Clouds and offering them.

@dtiberio39677 жыл бұрын
This is beautiful! I own these three modules and even following the patch points, I don't get this result. Can you explain what modes/settings are being used on the Telharmonic and Clouds?
@DivKid7 жыл бұрын
I think shift register mode on the tELHARMONIC and Looping Delay on Clouds. I think the key is to get something similar you can experiment rather than exact replication of a patch. Hopefully that allows you get something similar you can play with.
@dtiberio39677 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Absolutely agree, but I just wasn't getting close even which seemed strange. I had Clouds in Looping Delay mode on the stock firmware but I'll have to check the telharmonic mode to see if that might have been the issue. I may even run a calibration on my Clouds to see if that could be it. Thanks for being a great human and for the work you do! It is great to hear you on Sonicstate lately too, hopefully that keeps up.
@DivKid7 жыл бұрын
Yeah Nick at Sonic is great, I couldn't make it last week but was invited but maybe this week I'll get back on there. Let me know if you're still having trouble and I'll get onto Matthew that made this patch and ask.
@dtiberio39677 жыл бұрын
I've literally tried hundreds of combinations, and I can get some really cool stuff but nothing that is like this video sounds. It is definitely Shift Register mode and Looping Delay mode. If Matt has a minute and can recall any knob settings, I'd appreciate it. It has become more of a quest at this point :) The closest I have come all involve Centroid being all the way CCW, Flux all the way CW, Degree at 1 o'clock-ish, Interval and Tonic at 11 o'clock. Nano Rand at slowest clock rate and the purple LED algo setting.

Im new at eurorack...thanks for any help!

Wogglebug would work nicely in place of the Nano Rand for something like this definitely. The stepped CV output of the Wogglebug which is the top right output. Ask any questions anytime, happy to chat and help where I can.

Love the podcast and this patch, I just picked up a Nano Rand because of it. To echo Jan's request below, do you have a clearer explanation on the exact patching? It's hard to trace the exact ins and outs in the image, plus it looks like some stackcables are being used. Thanks!

dont know anything about modulars... could i actually get a working ambient system with just these 3 modules or would i need some other modules as well?
@DivKid7 жыл бұрын
Hey kuorinki, these 3 modules will give you a load to explore and it would work really well with for create ambient drones etc. But I don't think they're the best 3 modules to start learning on as you may get frustrated with some steep learning curves if you're not aware of synthesis much in general. That said ... depending on your approach you could just dive in and see how you get on.

Technically true... The following question would be: Are your cheapo synth and the echo pedal as open ended as these guys? ;)

Most of the fun with modular is working out how to ‘replicate’ (do better!) the fixed architecture in a cheapo synth. Ben knows that better than most I think…

@DivKid6 жыл бұрын
In a word - no. The unique feature of the Nano Rand is the random gate that changes it's divisions (it might give you a triplet, 16ths, 32nds, 8ths etc.) musically. You can get random gates tied to the same clock rate and stepped random from Pamela's NEW Workout though. You could CV the Pamela's NEW Workout with one of it's own stepped random sources to mimic it though ... so I I should change that word to YES.
