They are virtually the same machine, same 8 out board and same dac from memory. What happened and why Akai had to release the XL was because the 2000 hit a brick wall in terms of planned OS updates and bug fixes as you couldn't fit it all in the EPROMS so they just revised the hardware and released a new model instead. Marco Alpert was the product developer on the MPC-2000, that's the same guy who did the SP-1200. I never had the chance to compare them side by side but I read the MPC2000 still has a bug in the filter, so the filter is always at 1% resonance. It's never completely off. During it's evolution it had a lot of weird bugs that even effected it's sequencer timing.

Classic has balanced inputs the xl doesn't. This and the sound comparison. Having both. Leads me to believe they are not the same. The s3000xl also accepts the same 8 output that also sounds different. The best way to describe it is. The classic is more open. Better stereo imaging in & thinner ( in a good way) the xl is a little more boomier.

Great Comparison! The XL sounds more thinner to me more on the clean side. The 2000 classic has more meat and sounds more fuller and a bit more warmer. The Xl may have more features but Sonically the classic has more sound and fullness. Both Great Machines but ima go with the classic!..

I'm listening to this comparison through my Sony MDR7506 headphones and I can clearly hear the MPC 2000xl is either slightly louder or the drum transients are hitting harder on the 2000xl. very obvious from the drum loop. I would also say, the high end extension on the 2000xl may be a little more high fi. Honestly though, I don't hear enough difference for you to actually own one over the other. there are subtle differences but I cant really attest that to being small input differences or volume being slightly off.
@RCutOffakavEM
@RCutOffakavEM 4 жыл бұрын
the differences are subtle, but in my opinion the 2000xl is a little bit phatty sounding, the 2k classic is a more of a natural sounding machine. And also the 2k is taller in higher frequencies, hence more hi-fi. Both are great instruments!

The key is the "Akai" logo. The XL version with a "refreshed" Akai logo sounded closer to the 2500. The XL version with an oldschool Akai logo (as in case of MPC60, MPC3000 and MPC2000 Classic) sounded closer to the classic 2000.

The mix is affected by the machines the sound is coming from. A mix from the mpc 60 will sound very different than a mix from the mpc 2000 even if its the same beat and you try to make them sound as close as possible. There are slight differences between the xl and the classic, small as they may be, they are both taken into consideration when tracking out of these machines.

The MPC2000 Classic was used by Kanye West, D'Angelo, Damu The Fudgemunk, Noon, Eminem etc. Also DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, Dr. Dre and J Dilla had one as a side-MPC, this means something. The 2k is the best sounding MPC with waveform editing you can ever get.
@RoomAtTheTopStudio

Kanye = 2KXL Eminem = 2KXL. Dilla had one but didn't like it and gave it to a friend who surprised him with the beats he made on it. Dre had three 3000s in the studio so I doubt that he would have needed a 2K even as a side piece. Can't tell you about the rest as I'm not up on their equipment. The difference in sound is minute as one 2K to another. As for best sounding MPC with waveform editing I think some 4K users may disagree with you. Personally whatever works for you, use it.

Technically the sound is the same as both machines came from same factory in China and the difference is rather construction wise. If you sample with 33rpm and not work in a full analog/tube environment the sound will sound alike in the end. Not to mention that in order to get trustworthy analysis you would need to clean them thoroughly (inputs/outputs) and re-cap PSU to get exactly same voltage/noise specs. More surprising would be comparison between MPC 2000(XL) vs Yamaha or Emu 16bit sampler produced at this time 😉

I haven't tried it on my 2000XL yet but it's usually the same on any MIDI device. MIDI out from your XL to MIDI in of your audio interface using MIDI cables. MIDI out of your audio interface to the MIDI in of Motif. MIDI out of your Motif to the MIDI in of your XL. Go into the MIDI sync of your MPC and set the channel you want the Motif on (channel 1) set your MIDI settings to "Soft Thru," then set your MPC to slave in the settings so your DAW controls your MPC. You can now start your DAW and the MPC will start and you can play your Motif live and the MPC will sequence it then you can tweak it while it's playing. It should be the same on all MPC units. With both you're going to have to look for whether or not they have the effects board and 8 outs upgrade as it will drive the price up on both machines. I really dont give af about the sound. They sound similar. Even if they are not, the frequencies will be changed during mixing and mastering. 2000 is better! Had mine since 1997. Still have it and use it. Still looks brand new. Only fault that it shares with 2000xl are the development of burnt glue between digitizer and lcd and developing dead pixels over time. Other than that, they are not the same. 2000 "classic" looks better! It was the first one that was made after Roger Linn. The last one that was made by the original Akai company. Other reasons why I prefer 2000 over 2000xl: xl added the bs tilt screen. 2000 has fixed screen xl removed the digit/data wheel combo and added the bs black data wheel that you see on post-2000xl MPCs, including MPC 5000 xl shorten the mf height by 20mm xl decreased the mf weight by 2 lbs xl removed the mf air vents xl added extra bs buttons like 4 bank buttons, mute button, next sequence button. 2000 has all those abilities that can easily be accessed. xl added 200k note events to sequencer to make it 300k. xl added bs time stretching and bs bpm matching that is needed for amateurs who cant make it work manually xl added multiple program use ability to sequences. 2000 doesnt have that drum 1,2,3,4 workflow interruption bs xl added the bs ability to play 2 sequences at a time xl added folder management for a 32mb capacity MPC SMMFH xl changed the color of the open window button to some orange bs xl relocated buttons and knobs to a location above the pads. 2000 has nothing but 16 pads on the right! xl was manufactured under Akai professional M.I.Corp, which is the same company that did most of the MPCs that came after the 2000. Whereas 2000 "Classic" was manufactured under Akai Electric Co LTD, which is the same company that did every single Roger Linn MPC, S950, and a lot of other legacy Akai gear. xl removed the floppy disk OS boot requirement and placed the OS boot on a bs eprom that will eventually get corrupted and need replacement.

This is such a strange comment, almost all of the things you wrote are ways that the XL is a better and more convenient machine, and the rest are petty things that don't matter. I'd buy a 2000 classic if one came up cheap but there's literally nothing I'm missing out on with the XL. It can even do things like resample at different bitrates, which takes an absurdly long time but sounds really good. The only things that annoy me about the XL are the things they prioritised in the OS - like has literally anyone ever needed the 60 different time stretch settings that sound exactly the same? When they could have given us something that would be useful to everyone like a high pass filter, or the ability to record or convert a stereo sample to summed mono instead of just splitting left and right. Two things I constantly wish it could do.
