MPC Stems "Delayed" and Everyone is Pissed!

AKAI announced MPC Stems back in January and everyone is pissed off (or at least some people are upset). I want to address it in a shorter video about why it's delayed & why people are mad.

Yep, totally agree. We complain when stuff is released unfinished because it was rushed. So we shouldn't complain when companies take their time to get something right. Plus it's very much a first world problem!

I’ve haven’t complained about Akai since I’ve been using their products. I started off with the s950, then the 2000, Renaissance and live. What ever comes along and I can use it by them well I’m going to stand by them

After the converter thing of last year, not being included in new releases as of late, I've developed sort of a thicker skin for Akai. I've learned to less emotionally invest myself in releases like this because a the end of the day , I'm gonna make music regardless. The bells can only be jingled so many times. Teasing is okay, but teasing to much turns in to something played.

It is interesting that they would advertise Stems and mention a release timeframe, and then not be able to release it on time. I would love to hear the back story. This situation is such a self own. Nobody would have anything to complain about if they had not teased us.

It doesn’t work that way. They were likely some level of complete with what they were working on. Let’s guess 75%. When they got to 80% they realized there were problems, bugs, something didn’t behave as expected… So now they are actually 66% of the way along. Writing software is not an exact science that always behaves as expected. They have to balance memory and CPU use, which can take a lot of finessing.

I have an MPC ONE and I love it ! But I had a terrible experience with Akai customer service. I bought the AIR JURA but I wasn't able to install it on my MPC, the support agent told me that my internet connection was the problem and stopped replying to my emails. I have sent them several tickets and even asked for a refund several times but they never answered me back. Because of that, I am not sure I want to buy the MPC Stems when it comes out, even though I was pretty hyped at first. Thanks Ave, love your content, Peace !

Its going to be super challenging to do stems in standalone because of the CPU, all the videos you see are in controller mode. You can do stems for entire tracks in Cubase since 5 years ago. The quality is going to be super bad in standalone mode, they will need another mpc with more CPU power. Also doing stems on 10-20 seconds of audio is what we see from these videos and it takes too long when in controller mode. This stem announcement is only to sell the new MPC 37 and the plugins. AKAI MPC is software company now not hardware, someone out there just need to make a sampler that has the converter in and out and 8 outs with ADAT, USB and end this drama with the company. We have too many toys for $799 already we need something to work in standalone like we have 30 years ago, Dave Rossum please delivery us E-Mu reincarnation and end this ponzie scheme. There is clearly 135K followers who love your channel like me, but you got to pass the info to Akai to make the change, we been at this since 2017, if nothing is going to change, then we can at least move on stop hoping for REAL SOUND to come back. April 10 and we still do not have stems for the MPC units themselves. Just for the PC software. Someone who is using the PC software question whether or not might be possible on the units, based off of how much memory it was using on the PC. Obviously there is overhead on the PC, so that’s probably the reason. But it makes me wonder the viability of the software on the unit with only 4 GB of memory shared across the projects and the plug-ins. Would love to hear your opinion on it.

This situation is like a much more tampered down version of what happened with the SP-404 MK2. Where every content creator and their mom had access to it but customers had to wait months to get their hands on it. For us as music creators, we will have to be patient. A stable product is better than a rushed one. I think the companies that make these products, much like the gaming industry, should hold off on the aggressive marketing until they know for sure that the product will be out soon.

This just seems different, and it’s on your production equipment….the demos I’ve seen look pretty cool. I get the issues they are having with the software and I think the level of teaser videos that I saw didn’t show it being used in the software but in standalone mode. So I figured the standalone version would be available faster. Either way, this is certainly the dilemma with social media - and I can’t remember where I saw the price and the release time, but once it was mentioned, we clung to it like scripture!! I’ll wait for my email from Akai in the meantime!

As a data scientist, I can tell you that stems separation is a complex operational task in and of itself, but what concerned me about the release announcement and the subsequent hype is the sheer diversity of musical styles and genres that need to be considered. Beyond that, inMusic made announcements across their product family, where there Denon DJ Prime 4+ platform also is expecting the feature. The good news is that Prime 4+ users have a beta that we can play around with, but it still has a way to go. My hope is that they nail it on the MPC One and inMusic tightens their integration between the P4+ and the MPC to make a killer combination. Great video. Thanks for keeping a level head.

I'm quite alright with the delay. This is new technology, and it might take some time to perfect. On my older Intel Mac, Serato Sample takes a while to separate the stems, so I'm surprised they decided to implement that at all, especially on standalone machines.

This was definitely done to hype up sales of the MPC Key 37. Been waiting on Stems since it was first announced. The closest I have to this is the neural mix on the Djay app. The quickest stem separation for a mix, but in order to use it, I have to use music I have either bought or downloaded on my phone. It’d be nice if I could put my records to use with it since I’d rather have the sound and feel of the vinyl instead of having to buy and download a song I already got. Either way, still gon wait and see what’s to come.

Quick thing about Macs being preferred; Once upon a time, my midi controller (whatever at the time, Akai MPD24, Mkey keyboard, whatever brand hard drive etc)would be working when I finished the day. But wake up tomorrow, fire up my DAW, "di ding, di ding" (driver requires update). Sometimes it was a quick fix, most times it was soul draining process of trying to figure out why the update is not working, midi controller not working, library of sounds failing because external hard drive is no longer working. That was many years ago. Went Mac and never had that problem again. Just saying, on the humble.

Akai is not stupid. Newsflash, they aren't trying to figure things out and are just trying their best to get things right before the release. The "Upgrade" works fine, more than likely without bugs. It's why we have seen samples of how it works. The technology isn't new, it's happening all over the place. My bet is that their marketing department has had this planned out for quite some time and they'll probably drag it out for another month or two because they feel this is their "ace in the hole" against Maschine and other competitors and if they can get the buzz going, which they've already done, they can score big time. It's just another technology that we already have access to and can simply import the stems into the unit. 🤷‍♂️

I think this is great that they are taking their time to perfect something that is game changing for the industry. It's better to release something that is fully functioning and working as designed than to release it broken and having to back track and side step. It makes your company look unprofessional when you release half baked products. Consumers will lose confidence in your ability to actually make things that have value. This is even more critical when releasing hardware. Akai has created this very poor culture for themselves of releasing half baked products. Yet we still buy them hoping that they will fix what is wrong or missing. Can you image if the car makers had this mindset? We would all be dead... because someone didn't design the seatbelts correctly or the braking system was not thought out well. Even computer makers like Apple don't release things without fully working through all of the product internal for sometimes years before releasing things into the wind. You never see them back tracking and side stepping when something is broken because very few things are released that has not been vetted by every beta tester and internal technician inside of there organization for long periods of time.

Good video... here's my thoughts: 1) Having a standalone version is obviously what everyone's interested in. I don't think the $150 price for Serato is stopping any serious musician from owning a software license for that product. So.... 2) Given that they should have the ability to release a rock-solid version of their stems software for the standalone MPC's there must be some other issue in play. I say this because unlike Mac/PC software you don't have all the variations of OS versions and hardware configurations for the software developer to have to deal with. The standalone challenge for the software developers at Akai are 'finite' and so they should have been able to release the standalone version FIRST. So... what could be happening? 3) Legal issues. Maybe Serato saw this coming... got their hands on a pre-release copy and picked apart the source code and found infringements in their code's copyrighted material. I have to conclude this was heading for release until a phone call arrived from the legal team at Serato putting the release on ice. I hope I'm wrong. I'm dreaming of sampling the tubular bells from that Smashing Pumpkins song.. and Roger Waters bass from Money! LOL!!

I don't think it's the biggest thing in music creation. It's an alright tool for those that sample mainly. Let's be honest, not having stems is not why ppl were having issues making money or creating good music. I'm ready for a new company to pop up and give us machines with the tools out the box and no piece meals. These tech companies are getting as bad as politicians.

My best guess is that AKAI machines with 2GB of RAM ( e.g ONE+ ) is giving them the most work. Most Linux OS can spread the workload to virtual RAM ( SWAP ), but this is slower, as I say just guessing , but they are prob trying to find the best balance between speed of operation and having the MPC software stable and fast that suits all the MPC machines.

yeah...Stem processing is a TALL order based on the hardware processing specs of these MPCs. I originally thought that the standalone stem processing would most likelhy utilize cloud processing.

It will be interesting to see how they do it because it’s not like it’s a plugin/insert that you can activate within the plugins section of preferences. From what we’ve seen it’s baked right into the OS because you access it in ‘Process’ inside of sample edit. So that leads me to believe it’s either going to be free, or they’ll drop 3.0 or something at the same time which contains stems and will cost. Or some sort of premium firmware that is seperate from the standard firmware. I can’t wait to see how it goes down

Oh I would wait no rush when Akai gets there Ish together with a stable build then its on and popping I paid the 149 for serato sample and I am sure serato is tinkering with there product as well and no worries Ave.... you don't have to excuse anything man. it's a big company. alpha is definitely not anyone except the programmers. beta is for the users with programming and/or bug reporting skills. you are not to fault to anything and keep on making good shit. People have to think for them self. sucks that yall have to tip toe about all topics. this is an akai problem for advertizing to fast but everyone makes mistakes and get to excited about new stuff. lets go cheers to ya

I agree but akai need to be silent until its really ready to be released then let people sample it instead of releasing videos n its no where reaady. I cant wait for the drop but i can wait. Salute

As much as a "can't wait" to get down with stems, I'd def rather wait until it's ready for public consumption. Like another commenter said, if you love making music you're gonna make music. We've done without it this long. Hang on a little bit longer. (Hopefully not too long)
