I've only had my CRF450l for a few weeks but I haven't been able to get a rode ride in yet with the weather. With what is my first and last riding day of the year my dad and I go for a ride to see how much better MPG his CRF250L gets compared to my 450. The results were actually surprising. I love the 450L. So much nicer on the long highway stretches to the single track than my buddies 500exc. He always wants to ride it. Honda has the better suspension as well. But I forgot, the bike sucks because 600 mile oil changes or so every comment I read about from people with antiquated DRZ's. I better sell it because changing oil is so freakin hard. I better go out and buy a bike with less than 30 HP and weighs 340 pounds so I dont have to change my oil often. Higher performance everything but can't have all that nonsense cause oil changes. Oh and the pesky 1800 mile valve adjustments. Feelers gauges are hard umm k. Dual sports are all about compromise. I'd rather turn a wrench a little more and maintain a bike that is a freakin blast too ride than have a bike that would run for an eternity but is boring. You only live once. If putting around to see the view and get out in the wilderness is your thing, then low maintenance dual sports are great. If you wish you had a more exciting bike but you read others complaining about service intervals, ignore them. Get the bike that will make you grin the most when twisting the throttle.

@@nickgalan5264 OK I'm off on the weight but the 450L is pushing 47 horsepower with a vortex and a full exhaust. Plus you have real adjustable suspension. My wife rides the 250 which is a perfect bike for her. My concern with the 450 is the maintenance intervals. I was told 650 miles. I believe the 250L is like 1200-1500 miles before maintenance intervals.
@DadsDomain
@DadsDomain 4 жыл бұрын
The oil changes are 600. All on road use from what I have heard you can go further. Valve inspection is 1800 miles and full motor rebuild at 20k. For simply pounding out the miles the 250L is still a great bike because of how little you have to touch it. It’s rated for 8k oil changes. That seems like a bit much IMO though

250l is half the price, less hp and more weight. However that is not always bad. I have around 10k miles on my 250l. Longest ride was 1000 miles each way 2k miles total. I ride trails and in town. Over all I still see this bike as the best dual sport. Its plenty on the trails where 250fs or 450s are over powered. Its fuel efficiency in town and on trails is unbelievable. Hwy is a different ride and fuel suffers, I had to stop for gas every 45ish mins on hwy at 75-80mph full throttled. So not 70 mpg on hwy. Over all a bike capable of everything for around 5k? 250l is the best bang for buck. Also long service intervals 8k mile oil change etc. Just ride and smile on the 250l. Dont reccomend going that long on oil but honda approved it, motor is tank proof.

Wow - my 250L Rally routinely gets over 70 mpg. I don't thrash on it, but also not afraid of the throttle. Lowest MPG I have seen on the bike was 63 mpg, highest was 81 mpg. (Lots of 35-45 mph road riding on that tank...) Might want to check that 250L and see if there is a blockage in the intake tract or something...? I think Honda kinda messed up a bit with the 450L - they should have made the bike with about 40 hp and given it service intervals like the 250L. 600 mile oil change? Valve check/adj every 3 oil changes? Too much hassle if you actually want to use the bike for a trip - even a weekend would need to change the oil...

When I get the 450l I’m planning on doing the same, vortex/Yoshimura swap although probably not right away. Im not considered about fuel consumption per say. Such hard decisions. I only ride on early Sunday mornings and do about 100 -/+ miles in 1 day.. It’s a 20 miles street to the local trail, then up a beat up mountain fire road thays another 20 miles or so, enjoy the views and explore around and go back home. I want either a 300L or a street legal 450L (rl, X, xl whatever they call them) Maintenance is no big deal. But my mind says 300L for pure MPG and reliability and with the price savings I could do the suspension mods available and other accessories to make it tricked out. But on the other hand I’ve always ridden full size mx bikes, and the 450 probably only would need a pipe, and a larger gas tank to be more then enough. I guess it would depend on how small the 300L is in person. I’ve yet to see one

If you want to feel like you're riding an MX bike on the road then its the 450 with an exhaust and ECU mod. It completely reminds me of my 06 450R. There are a lot of differences but they feel like brothers. The 250/300 feel nothing like MX in my opinion and with your background you'll need stiffer springs. But if you're never in a hurry they'll run forever and do it on the cheap

Crf 450 running with hours as Motocross version or you can do thousands of miles with only oil change every 3000 miles and valves settings every thousands of miles?
@DadsDomain
@DadsDomain 3 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on how it’s ridden. Cruising around low throttle it could go a long ways. High rpm. Full throttle. More fuel works its way into the oil….etc for mostly road use the max I would go is 1000 personally

After watching this video and doing some research, I think the CRF250L looks neater and one cannot justify the price difference and then when you read about the maintenance required on the 450 compared to the 250 you cannot justify buying the 450 unless you have money to burn.

That’s an alright video but not how to figure mpg accurately. The distance is too short because the precision in filling isn’t there. It’s nice you showed it on your bike but you clearly don’t fill it as much as at the beginning. Then the math is a bit wrong. And you cropped his miles. If he takes turns wide and you dive inside you go different distances. It’s not one vehicle they don’t travel the same. You didn’t show his gas but even a little squirt extra will matter after only 30 some miles. Maybe try keeping track over multiple tanks to get an accurate number. Either way that is for posting it. Have fun out there.

I don't disagree with what you're saying but I am comfortable with the numbers as I've done them again off camera and the results are consistent. We posted another video comparing MPG after changing both bikes as well and while not scientific I'm comfortable stating we're +/- 5%
