My Jetta TDI used to get crazy-high intake air temperature. Stop-n-go driving in Florida in the summer will do that. I hooked up a scanguage, and could see the intercooler heat-soaking. Sometimes the intake air temperature would reach 80*C! And the engine would get unhappy. So I added an electric fan to the intercooler, with a temperature switch. I set the switch to activate at 50*C. That fixed the problem. The intercooler doesn't heat-soak anymore. And the engine is happy.

Great to see you enjoy the car! Bit of finesse work to go from the sounds of things, but keep at it! Air to water intercooler gets my vote for a solution, as I've gone this route on my AW11 project. Pretty sure you've seen that on my instagram or youtube 'channel'. A fan on the intercooler in the interim would help. Getting the air temp sensor mounted up stream in the airflow will also help. Another oddball solution that'd help is a phenolic spacer on the intake manifold. That would help keep excess heat from the head from migrating up into the intake manifold.

Time to upgrade to water 2 air intercooling. Youve got power still left on the table. For the intercooler coolant heat xchanger, you can try mounting it in a box at 45 degrees and running a duct in and out. Kinda like an oem air filter, but put your radiator in the box instead of an air filter. Try to get ram air to feed the box through ducting. Use a duct fan like a 3 inch 12v bilge blower in the exhaust side to pull air through the radiator in absense of ram air. Great project and a unique car compared to the meta.

Cars now are crazy cause now I build late model civic type R and I get 24-26 mpg out of a 600whp car. I saw your afr. 11.0 is a bit rich. You would actually be losing power when running that rich. An 11.5 would still be very safe and could make more power. Also adding more fuel doesn’t equal more ignition timing as that’s a myth. Only when your running excessively lean.
@celiturbo Жыл бұрын
11.0 is way more than a bit rich. Its not a big cam or high compression engine, 1bar boost should still be around 12.8-13.5 even leaner would still be safe just off the power curve, no reason to be dumping fuel for cooling at that pressure unless all you can get is like 87oct sams club gas forcing timing out of it. Those 4a/7a engines are also happy to cruise at 15-16:1 if you put enough low load timing in, easy 40mpg if your following traffic laws. early 90's lean burn was like this till the epa came down on nox emissions, now everything since 96/97 runs way rich at cruise loads. I really don't gather that dude at all comprehends that if its rich timing has to come out, lean it will will need to be advanced, or the relation of timing to egt & turbo spool.

@johnnyblue4799 Жыл бұрын
There's something that I don't understand. At 3:29 I see your target AFR is 11.2 and the actual 10.96. Imo, that's way too rich. That might also explain hesitations on acceleration at lower rpm when hot (other that the exhaust leak), because you have even less air. You need to get that car on the dyno, for a proper tune-up. A good AFR at that throttle opening should be around 13 afaik.

@celiturbo Жыл бұрын
@@d4a More fuel will usually make it more likely to knock. You can run a lot more timing lean than you can rich. 1bar of boost is nothing on pump gas, should still be 12.8-13.5:1. No charge cooling is a problem, cant be doing that over 0.5bar on gas.

I have an AWD car that’s a bit front heavy (60/40 weight split) and of course understeers. I’ve done a larger rear swaybar, some coilovers, and adjusted tire pressures a bit. This helps it feel very neutral. I’m thinking my next steps are to add a rear LSD, and a controller to lock the AWD system engaged. It’s 50/50 power split front and rear when locked, and I’m hoping adding the LSD will do similar as it has for you. Let me control the rear not just by lifting the throttle as I can now, but by pressing it too, and making very safe, controlled, predictable rear end step out. Good luck sorting out the rest of the build! Perhaps more focused ducting for your intercooler, and some exhaust and turbine heat shielding, can help your IAT’s some.

15mpg is horrid millage, no excuses for what it is, that tune plain sucks. On a modern ecu and not needing to meet the emissions requirements all the factory cars had to there is no excuse to be getting worse mileage than a modded with piggyback mess late 80's factory turbo car. Well there is the "I'm too stupid to properly tune it and i don't care" excuse but none that would allow pretending that 15 is pretty good.... 88 supra, 600cc injectors, t60, speeduino, getting it down to 15mpg might be possible city driving pulling 0-60 in a 30mph zone stop sign to stop sign but in general having way too much fun with the car still comes up 22-25. 30-33 just hwy cruise. 15 on a tiny engine in a tiny car on a modern ecu is complete trash, like if its 9:1cr and on e85 ok... It's about time I say I have enjoyed many of your videos while trying to ensure I have a good understanding of my own projects, pretty sure I may have learned something along the way too. I also think the little 4AGE is great and really appreciate your project. (4AGE head/inlet development seemed to be in total parallel with CA18DET with various butterflies/pipework from 1985-1989, 12 inlet runners, then 8, then finally 4) What are your current spec and plans, the project underdog videos span a long time and I don't want to have to watch them all in order to figure it out :) Are you still testing the cheap GT28 for results before swapping to Garrett (GTX gen2?) turbo to compare? The JK Fab video you referenced in your Maxpeeding GT28 video is, I think, one of our UK 200SX owners who (re)builds turbos. I'm considering changing my old-tech GT2871R (0.64, "52-trim") on my Nissan CA18DET engine for a GTX2860 gen2 or G25-550 and maybe going back to the standard exhaust manifold (OK for this power), all for better spool and more torque lower down as I'm limited by standard rods (350bhp and 300+ft-lbs at 4400-6100rpm) but I can probably push the rods and turbo to 380bhp. I'm rebuilding two spare cylinder heads with larger exhaust valves and gasflowing these myself, the inlet manifold, plenum and TB, so maybe it would be opportune to upgrade the rods. The engine was fully rebuilt with forged pistons and metal head gasket 15 years ago but has not been used much for 10 years. A full head build, new gaskets, new turbo and remap would be quite an investment! Would like to know your thoughts. I'm not sure I really need to change the head or turbo, I enjoy the projects... but not the expense. And, to be honest, it is pretty savage as it is in a 1150kg car with aftermarket long/close gear ratios, I think it would be better to have a smoother, earlier and less violent surge of torque! (150->300ft-lbs from 3500->4400rpm) although I must admit this surge is very addictive and could be faster but less enjoyable with better torque earlier? I have considered longer inlet runners and different cams. Maybe I should save the better engine build project for a kit car in the future, a Fisher Fury with up to 360bhp at different boost settings :D One last Question. What compression ratio are you using now the 4AGE is built, just curious as to how high you dared to go? I'm no expert, but I wonder whether your dump valve is leaking as I'm hearing a lot of "whoosh" as the boost builds even before you close the throttle, might be worth investigating. Bailey DV30 recirculating is great with 22psi and aluminium pipes :D

How does the LSD solve understeer by "pushing" the car? If the front tyres are overwhelmed pushing shouldn't help (since understeer is also known as "push").
@arya_amg Жыл бұрын
It's a RWD of course it will oversteer with more push
@NitroNuggetTV Жыл бұрын
Solve is the wrong word for it. An LSD can cause both, like you mention. But generally, an LSD will just provoke the rear axle to step out under heavy power, overriding the understeer. Its a bit of a sledge hammer solution to the problem tbh, and can make for some scary driving characteristics, ie snap oversteer. Anti Roll Bar's, driving style and suspension geometry/setup would be the correct way to fix the understeer. edit; its the same principle as trying to drift a car with an open diff vs welded diff. the open diff understeers, while the welded steps out.
@dielaughing73 Жыл бұрын
@@arya_amg yeah I wouldn't exactly describe oversteer as a 'solution' to understeer. The other commenter explained it though.
@dielaughing73 Жыл бұрын
@@NitroNuggetTV fair enough, I guess the ideal corner exit is a controlled four-wheel drift and this is one way to achieve that. My Miata has a torsen diff like this car so perhaps I'm already experiencing what he is. The car does tend to push but I'm becoming aware I'm probably causing that in large part. Driver mod, geo, springs and shocks are a work in progress (sways already installed and set nice and stiff, but still subject to further adjustment).
@stenyak Жыл бұрын
These Quaife TBDs (torque biasing diffs) create a natural sort of torque-vectoring effect under throttle: the outside wheel is sent a greater torque than the inner wheel. Whereas an open diff would send an equal 50-50 split of torque. So it's this torque bias is what "pushes" the car to rotate into the corner, to the point you often need to unwind the steering wheel a bit to compensate for the torque vectoring effect if you go full throttle mid corner with plenty of grip left.

Wow!!! Just discovered your MR2 series and couldn't have found it at a better time. Just scored an 87' MR2 AW11 N/A auto here in the U.S. that I've seen parked for years for a couple hundred buks. All the practical knowledge you're passing on is amazing! Instantly subscribed! Btw also happen to own an 94' Audi UrS4 that I want to upgrade to an Apikol intercooler. Will the OEM one be suitable for an MR2 turbo build? What OEM turbos do you recommend that could be potentially harvested from a JDM- i.e. FD13B or 4g63?

Get a water methanol injection. I have 1 on my car and it is absolutely amazing! Even when it's stupid hot out, under boost, IAT is well below ambient!

I have a Mk1 with a 20 valve 4AGE and I've never gotten less than 30 MPG. Lots less HP than yours though. Still more fun than the stock 16 valve.

Highway mpg would you nbr aroumd 26mpg? Normally they get about 30-40mpg but 40 would be driving a place without hills/mountain to drive i'd assume. 30-33 would be my guess without turbo, so that makes me as if 26mpg would be highway and 20 city if you do push it everywhere. With rhe issues fix i would think you get another 1 or 2 while driving in Mexico.

When hot you just need to add some fuel with the iat correction, at least that's what I saw in my case. Low load like 3-5% more, high load, in boost 3-5% less fuel at hot temperature

Talk to paul woods and look into getting a hapers hatch. You could route/duct the air from the scoop into your intercooler.

My biggest issue with my engine is my oil drain and water lines, i can get a 4an fitting that clamps over coolant pipes with a hole drilled (not keen lol)

is there some practical reason for driving as loud as possible around other people and through neighborhoods?
@blackshaderhunter990 Жыл бұрын
Why the ''pshhhh'' of the dumpvalve is that loud even if you are not at high RPM ?

water intercooler is basically mandatory for mid engined cars. I melted plastics in the engine bay on my NA 3rd gen, soooo....

@@d4a They do nothing other than heat soak till they have air flow. Why pretend otherwise? Just because porsche did it does not mean it at all properly managed inlet temps after sitting at a stop for a minute. Everyone that has actually built up a aw11 or sw20 knows its just a exercise in stupidity to even bother without some sort of rally scoop and a 50amp fan running your battery dead at idle. Lot of people talk or make assumptions, very few monitor IAT to know. I know 1 bar boost at 50-55c is around 20% more air by weight than 1bar at 90c and I know been there done that, oversized aftermarket ic + spal fan on a stock sw20 at 1bar is still going to be up 75-80c in prolonged high load at speed on a 30-32c day, spikes over 105c heat soaked. Its a fools game without chopping the car up, running e85/ethanol, or some kind of water/meth injection

That's so cool man I'm envious. You know everyone that has actually built up an mr2. I'll let the rest of the nonsense slide. Chill out, most people are here to have fun, exchange ideas and discuss without being aggressive and obnoxious. You're discrediting yourself with your tone. There are countless good builds of mid-engined cars with air to air and also rally scoops don't work on an AW11. Yes, w2a is also great and everything has its merits.
