Hats off to Bob Newhart to have the lack of ego to allow himself to star in two, long-running shows. Yet (seemingly) be content to remain in the background and let other actors get the big laughs. I imagine many stars of comedy series would not be able to do that. R.I.P. Bob Newhart ☮

The Jack Benny Show model. Surround yourself with great characters and act as the lynchpin. Call the show after your own name and no matter who gets the laughs the audience will always say: Did you hear what they said on the Jack Benny, Bob Newhart, or Seinfeld Show last night.

When I heard of Bob's passing away the other day I felt real sorrow and a true loss. "The Bob Newhart Show" is my 2nd favorite Sitcom of all time. What i really liked is that it was a show about adults much like my #1 sitcom "Seinfeld". There were just a few episodes that I didn't care for and they all had to do with Howards son. RIP Mr. Newhart say hello to your good friend Don Rickles for me, I hope he made it;)

I remember watching this the night it first aired and laughing my ass off. I’m only guessing now, but was Riley responsible for cracking up the cast and causing retakes more than anyone else? I have to suppose he was until I’m corrected. All of Bob’s other regular patients were wonderful, but Mr. Carlson... what a piece of work! Also, who played the old man who only spoke about how his wealthy son was disowning and mistreating him? He did an incredible job of never once even starting to look like he was about to laugh. Thanks!

Seriously? I thought the actress playing the Mom was too young looking to have kids that age, and I just assumed the actors playing the kids were older than the ages they were playing. Not sure if it was a trend, but I remember several cases in older movies and TV shows where actresses playing the mother were only a few years older than the ones playing their children.
