And as for rakija, it is the soul of every Serb from the moment they are born, when they are baptized, when they are celebrated, when something is celebrated and when someone dies, a little rakija is always drunk for the soul!

The larger plum is for eating, and the smaller plum called POŽEGAČA is used for baking brandy. At the same time, it goes through the brandy roasting process twice, in order to eliminate METHYL ALCOHOL, which is harmful, and ETHYL ALCOHOL remains. Brandy baked in this way is called PREPEČENICA. It is officially sold as standard with a strength of 42% ALCOHOL. However, in the countryside, specifically in the area famous for BRANDY made from plums, a strength of 55-60% ALCOHOL is made.My father once made brandy in the countryside and it was 60%. It had an extraordinary taste, but very strong. You could only drink a very small glass of BRANDY. RAKIJA made from plums is called ŠLJIVOVICA (synonym is PREPEČENICA, which means that it has been baked twice. In restaurants somewhere they sell SOFT RAKIJA, WHICH HAS ONLY BEEN ROASTED ONCE, WHICH SMELLS A LOT AND IS HARMFUL, GIVES HEADACHE DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF METHYL ALCOHOL WHICH IT IS POISON FOR THE ORGANISM. SOFT BRANDY IS MILDER, I THINK 20-30% alcohol. .....

This is only part of the food and drinks that are prepared in Serbia. People who visit Serbia leave here full of wonderful memories and even fuller bellies. For complete enjoyment, you should visit the rural areas and try the food prepared by the hosts. When it comes to brandy, brandy is not only made from plums, it is also made from quince, apricot, apple, pear, grape. Serbia may not be known for its wine, but the native grape varieties that are grown here give exceptional pleasure to the palates of wine connoisseurs. And the food? Well, it's hard to describe in words, in general, Serbs eat quite spicy food, where the basis is mostly based on meat. All I can do is invite you to come visit Serbia and the entire region and enjoy our hospitality. Greetings from Serbia.

@@MrGiant Serbian cuisine, and that of the entire Balkans, is specific. There are some autochthonous dishes, but most of the dishes were brought from the north from German cuisine, from the south of Greece and Turkey, in the coastal areas, a strong influence of Mediterranean cuisine. Many dishes are originally from those regions, but people from these areas changed them in part and created something that is more suitable for our climate.

Try AJVAR, which is made from ROASTED RED PEPPERS and EGGPLANTS. There is HOT and MILD AJVAR. It is similar to PINDŽUR - (PEPPER and TOMATO.). Ajvar is prepared much more often than Pindžur, although Pindžur is, according to many, tastier than Ajvar. It is probably a matter of tradition, that Ajvar is made more often. ONCE YOU TRY AJVAR, YOU WILL ALWAYS EAT IT. KAJMAK is tastier than CHEESE. In the process of processing cow's cheese, it is removed from the surface of the cheese and stored in a special container. There is YOUNG (20% milk fat) and OLD CREAM (up to 70% milk fat)....etc...etc... Come to Serbia. Everyone who comes is pleasantly surprised. Everything is completely different than you were lied to on television. @@MrGiant

Serbia had largest number of plum trees in the world until just recently when China overtook them. They don't show much on videos but soup was always essential for lunch before the main meal. Up North they used to eat pasta at least once a week and tomato soup was essential. Tomato soup or vegetable soup was also eaten when knedle (gomboce) or taske were for lunch. I used to think that Serbs invented pasta for lunch or for main meal. I still believe it is possible but Italians made it popular and possibly they ate it more. According to a German who visited a friend in Italy, they eat past for breakfast, lunch and dinner but in Serbia pasta is eaten only in one meal. For dinner, lots of cheese and milk and whatever else.

Rakija is type of brandy, the one made they are mostly not sweet, even though there is some variations that are mixed with honey. It is strong drink, like votka or tequila, but if I’m not wrong, even stronger. It is tough to get used to it if you are not from Balkan, but once you do, there is no better alcoholic drink in the world. It is a deep part of a culture here. Literally if you are invited to drink it in someone’s household, you must not decline it, it is almost an insult 😄 one interesting fact, and let’s call it an advice, if you drink real homemade rakija, you can drink it a lot, but drink it with a lot of water as a side drink, and you wont have a headache tomorrow or be hangover. That advice is free of charge, you are welcome 😂

In Serbia, we make brandy from almost any fruit, especially plums. Each brandy has the taste of the fruit it is made from, quince, sour cherry, apple, gooseberry, watermelon, melon, apricot, peach...but plum is still our pride. Fun fact. In the 1950s, Pirot's kackavalj was brought to the White House by the American president, who regularly ate it.

Plum rakija (sljivovica) is in Serbia most common because great abundance of plums. It can be commom( soft-meka 40%) or double and triple destilated (hard-prepek 50- 70%). However the most valued and expensive brandies in Serbia are fruit brandies, especially viljamovka (pear brandy), dunja (quince brandy) and kajsija (apricot brandy), but holy grail of serbian rakia (and vine) are made in Serbian Orthodox monasteries by monks and are known as MANASTIRSKA. As a foreigner, you may be able to try it, but it is unlikely that you will be able to buy it, because traditionally this brandy is not sold but given as a sign of gratitude and friendship. There are also small distilleries where you can find incredibly good brandies with various mixtures of fruits, herbs and honey,

Small correction. According to DNA research in this area, the Serbs did not come in the sixth century, but are the original inhabitants of this area. The matching of haplogroup I2a1 of the remains from Vinca and the current inhabitants of Serbia is about 50% or more. And a lot of historical data confirms that thesis. The difference between the current official history and this information is a long story and highly controversial and perhaps for another occasion.

I will talk about brandy. It is our national drink.. But books can be written about brandy. Brandy is an alcoholic drink made from fruit (from plum - šljivovica, from pear - viljemovka, from apple - jabukovača, from peach - breskovača, from apricot - kajsijevača, quince - dunjevača, from drena - drenovača, even from grapes - loza) And no be fooled. Not a single brandy is not sweet. The percentage of alcohol varies. The unit of measure for the percentage of alcohol is degrees or degrees from (~ 31 to over 50 degrees). We call weaker brandies "soft", and there are also toasted brandies (brandy that is thermally processed twice and is very strong). Also. there are white and yellow brandy (colorless and golden-yellow), and the color depends on the way of storage and preservation - if the brandy is stored in glass bottles, it is transparent, colorless (white brandy), and if it is stored in wooden barrels, the brandy acquires color in depending on which wood the barrels were made from. The best brandy is made from plums, from which the pits are removed before fermentation. One of the rarest brandies is šljivovica made from prunes. I had the rare pleasure of trying it in a monastery... it's ambrosia... an inimitable taste. Some people put medicinal herbs or the root of special plants in šljivovica and thus make brandy with a specific taste. However... my favorites are quince brandy and dren-brandy (dren is a small berry that grows like a weed and has an amazing sweet and sour taste. But, brandies have a very sharp taste, are not sweet and have incredible aromas and bouquets. However, sweet drinks are also made from brandy ... fruits (cherries, pears, etc.) are added to the finished brandy with sugar and this is how fruit liqueurs are made ... mostly quite sweet). That's all for now ... I can't even begin to talk about Serbian cuisine ... I would talk a lot ... for many days 😍🤣

To awnser ur question plums are sweet but the sweetness of rakija depends on how much sugar u add into it (every household has its own recepie) and from what fruit it was made. Its a hard drink its usually between 40 and 50% alcohol, its strong and u drink it from shot glasses and it can be made from many different fruit.

Rakija is noy made only from plumbs, it is made from all sorts of fruits and every have an unique flavor, how harsh it would be depends how long it stays in the barrels, also barrels affect the color and flavor. Cheap ones mass produced are the harshest and artificial in taste. Homemade ones can be really strong in alcohol content, but are areomatic. We say good rakija should not scratch the thorat but warm the belly. It is something like Serbian whiskey, quince one is my favorite, it is very aromatic and fruity, smell great and it is really easy to drink. There are some mixed fruit ones, then double fermented ones and so on, those liquerish , mixed with honey, chestynuts, hazelnut extraxts , even with truffles, since Serbia is rich with truffles they are not as expensive as in the US. But the most famous are plumb, grape, apricot and apple

Serbia has some of the best dishes in the world simple but full of flavour. Easy to make also only their cakes the tortes can be difficult . The liquor made from plums is super strong Hard to handle but the aroma the smell is beautiful it is strong and smooth.
