I'm from the UK and never saw these guys live. The album "Slave" was one of the first LP's I bought and as a bass player he was one of my heroes. He had a unique style which I try to this day to emulate. I went to from guitar to bass because of this guy. What a player!!!!! RIP Mr Mark

YES! The holy trinity 😊. Louis influenced me before I even realized it (was too young to be thinking about instruments). Bernard was the one who made me wanna pick up a bass after hearing "Good Times". And Mark had that incredible sound. "Slide" and "Stellar Fungk" captured my imagination, but it was "Just a Touch" and "Watching You" that had my ear really tuning in to his bass. I gotta give a shout out to Henry E. Davis of L.T.D. He doesn't get as much recognition, but his buttery funk really influenced me. Besides his formidable work with L.T.D., he was a studio musician and played on big hits like Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" and Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way". He was another bass master who died too young (63).

Cleveland: The Dazz Band, The Deele; Michael Hampton (Funkadelic); Cincinnati: Bootsy, The Isley Brothers, Midnight Star; and Dayton: Dayton, Zapp (Roger Troutman), Sun, Lakeside, The Ohio Players, Faze-O, Heatwave (The Wilder Brothers), Junie Morrison (P-Funk/and solo), and SLAVE. I loved these bands as a tween, teenager, and young adult. I exalted for years that PFunk was my favorite until one day I woke up and realized that the only music that I never got tired of was the music of SLAVE. The greatest Band, the greatest Bass Player, the greatest screaming guitar licks, the most unique female vocalist, the most unique male vocalist that almost broke through but never saw the light of day. Danny Webster was Keith Sweat before Keith Sweat ( I guess there wasn’t room in the world for more than one famous Daniel Webster); Steve Arrington’s vocal abilities were only exceeded by his lyric writing prowess. Starleana Young, a voice perfect for the “Hard Funk” of SLAVE. They broke up precisely at the wrong time. Mark Hicks (Drac) guitar licks were incredible and gave SLAVE a unique fusion feel in some of their jams. However, SLAVE was and always will be defined and identified by the sound of the HANSOLAR,S (Mark Adams) bass playing skills. No one sounded like him (except Sandy Anderson in Odyssey’s Inside Out). When the two Mark’s lost their lives in the same year, months apart, that was the day the music died. Steve Washington was the Fearless Leader but Drac was the Heart and Mr. Mark was the soul of, in my opinion, Ohio’s greatest Band and that's saying a lot. They didn’t have the polish or received the praise and pay of the Ohio Players, Lakeside, The Isley Brothers, Bootsy, Heatwave and others but after all these years it’s something about them that stands out. I believe it is "that Bass.”

Morrisman Smith, I am from Dayton, Ohio and even though I have not lived there in years, Dayton is and always will be my home. I want to thank you from my heart for doing this video. I went to school with Mark and knew him & his Mother very well. I just learned of Mark's passing a couple of days ago..Mark & I became friends in school and this guy was the most kind hearted and caring person you could know. Mark was all about that Bass and at the sametime could bust me out in laughter in a second,,, and he would do that the most while we were in class so the teacher would ask me what was so funny? I would say nothing just the samething, Mark..LOL..Slave had released Slide and it was headed to the top. He was excited about the album and the Tour that was coming. He said Sammy I'm going to be a star. Well we cracked on each other all the time and I said you ain't gonna be no star because you know your Mom ain't letting you go on no Tour if your A*s don't get them grades up. Mark said man you about to be setting home watching t.v. and Slave is gonna be on a show and you gonna being saying Damn I know that dude. He was right. Mark was brutally murdered, and Justice has just got to happen.. I am saddened by this and my Heart & Prayer's go out to Mark's Family & Friends. He is truly missed. I'm not a musician at all, in the summer of '77 this group with the great mark "hansolor" adams, had me and all my high school friends going crazy! When I learned of his passing in 2011 it devastated me, like someone I grew up with, which I did. Maaaaan, I had no idea about this happening to him! I, like yourself, just knew that he has passed (Drac passed in the same year I believe from a massive heart attack). I'm from Dayton originally and lived there full time until 1981. In fact, I knew people that knew Mark (and the members of Slave) personally. They were, and still are, the bomb! I still listen to them on the regular and am quite proud of the Dayton Funk era. Thanks for sharing this.

I'm very disappointed in the Columbus Police Dept... Det David Dennison hasn't investigated this case at all ... Wow. I came to YT to find a bass cover on the bassist for Slave. As a teen myself back in the late 70's this band was one that caught my attention from the start. I don't remember the name of that song with that iconic bass solo in it. The song had a line ," All of the ladies, all of them fine, all of them so lovely I can't make up my mind, but I'm looking at you girl from the corner of my eye..." . The bassline in this song blew me away. Mark was one of the bassist that influenced me to pick up a bass; the first being Jermaine Jackson, which I thought was doing the playing on those old J5 records only to find out it was Jamison and other bassists actually playing; anyway it was all good, because the bass today is my favorite instrument. The bass is the first line I'm listening to. Anyway not to be long about it; I was hooked on Mark's incredible bass playing. I really hadn't listened to their music in years, and coming to your video just now finding out that he passed on. And your advice is so valuable and needed for these young kids wanting to get into the music industry. From some of the things that I've read about past artist, they had really suffered because of all the most that's in that industry. Thanks for your insight and for the passion for what you do. I'm still searching for an answer to my question about which bass Mark, the Hanslor used to record on this album and the later Slave albums they recorded on Cotillion Records? I know about recording and EQ what it can do to sound. I know about his playing technique, I have a Fender Jazz and an Alembic Series I, both which he played, and I've come close to the sound but not quite. He had that three pickup modified Fender Jazz bass with the active electronics and I suspect that this is the bass he used on those recordings to get that unique tone out of his bass aside from outboard equipment. This is part of what has kept me a Slave fan since the beginning. If anyone know someone who knows about this, please send them my way! 🎸

Mark Adams was definitely one of my favorite bassist ever. When I was a teenager back in the late 70’s when I came across this band Slave, man that funky bass line from “Watching you” was just so mesmerizing. Adams was an early inspiration to want to check out the bass. But my very first influencer on bass was Jermaine Jackson, but later I learned it was Jameson actually on the recordings. Bernard Edwards, and Larry Graham was influencers also.

I know that I'm assuming things but if members of the band don't care then no one else will. There are very few groups that can claim that " they adapted to the record company, if anything the record company adapted to them ! So I can honestly say that " Slave was one of the very few groups that crossed over to the commercial side ( because you gotta make money)but yet were able to still to throw that raw funk in your face even in a more commercialized setting and I have to reiterate to some of my fellow bass players who have a helluva man crush on Marcus Miller ( and rightfully so ) that it was Mark Adams that hit the Soul and R&B radio waves 1st before I or even most of the bass players I knew had even heard of Marcus Miller.... I didn't start hearing Marcus until 78 when he was with Lenny White , Lonnie Liston Smith and Chaka Khans " Naughty album. If I ever had a bass hero it was Mark Adams and with all do respect to the bass players who've and has played in Slaves band before and since his passing I say God bless you and thank you

Pretty neat. Back in 1979, my band out of the CA bay area was out on the road and playing at the 20 story Holiday Inn in Syracuse, New York. Slave was doing some shows downtown. and since they were staying at the same Holiday Inn and we were playing 6 nights a week there, they came in to see us and we got to hang out together for a few days. Nice people and great memories.

I live here in Dayton and he was not murdered. I talked to his son. The autopsy also said he had an aneurysm which when that happened he fell backwards onto his head. I don't think it's a secret that Mark had a drug problem which more than likely caused the aneurysm. The only person pushing this murder angle is his ex girlfriend who was and still is jealous of the woman who was his fiancee at the time this happened. Even going as far as saying the fiancee had something to do with it which is ridiculous. His own kids are not even pushing that

Larry Graham....the greatest bass player of all time in my opinion. The list goes on with Aaron Mills, Mark Adams, Verdine White, Marvin Isley, James Jamerson, Bootsy Collins, Marcus Miller, Cedric Martin, Luis Johson, Bernard Edwards, James Alexander. I probably missed a few, but this list is off the top of my head. Man....I miss the 70s music!!

I took my nephew to see Drac/Slave at Morongo Casino in California and we were up front staring at Drac waiting for those solos . He came up to us and jammed and he knew we were digging it. Unfortunately he died right after that performance. Rip Drac

Per Tim "Tiny" Dozier from Slave. They didn't do many shows promoting their albums. There just really isn't much film footage out there to be seen unfortunately. SMH An overlooked jam from that first album was "You and me". Mark went crazy on that bass.

It had something to do with the theory of Hands Soloing here on earth. It seemed to be that kind of a concept by Mark from me speaking to him about it. he also told me that he got that sting on the bass from verdine White.

Yes GirI............ I lived with Mark. He recruited me as lead singer in 1982 from here in San Francisco ca. I am singing every song on new plateau album including a duet with the great Floyd Miller on share your love. An extremely sad story. Mr. Mark Adams was only known in funk circles. However I think his bass playing was absolutely magnificent, his bass danced walked and talked. He was what marlon Brando was to acting, Frank Sinatra to singing, Charles Dickens to writing, Fred Astaire to dancing and Muhammid Ali to boxing. I believe his bass playing should be studied in university. Mark Adams and a Slave the baddest bass and hardest funk band in the land.

Marc Hicks left to work with Steve Washington and to do his own solo work and Mark stayed with the original Save until his sad and untimely passing. He remained a true hero and still is !

He was a great talent, however alot of musicians meet a violent and tragic end. Jaco Pastorius died from a beating suffered by a club owner. I think there is a conspiracy to keep quiet, how these musicians die because they want to glorify the "vices"
