I engineered this recording using the Sheffield Recordings LTD, remote truck. I used a brand new (that day!) Trident 80B console and Genelec monitors. This recording was either recorded analog on an Otari MTR90 or digitally on a Sony Dash 3324 machine, I can't remember. The majority of the tracks were from the touring rig and I used 4 Shure SM57's facing away from the stage, on the audience. The original show was an MTV broadcast. I mixed the tracks at Sheffield the morning after the show. This was a wild, wild day for myself and the recording crew. We didn't have enough time, the Ritz was many stories up a brownstone, we had to run our heavy snake up a fire escape and the setup was challenging. But we got through it!

Welcome to the Real World is a great album. It’s one of the few vinyl records I replaced after sellng everything off and moving cross-country. when I saw it in a local record shop in 2018 I had to get it. The copy I traded had a scratch at the beginning of “Is it Love,” and my new copy is used but in perfect shape so it’s good to have that track without a skip because of the importance of that staccato synth part at the beginning in setting the mood. Great, great music!

Many thanks for uploading this! I had this show saved in my liked playlists a couple of years back but either it got removed by YT or the channel that uploaded it closed their account or something as it disappeared. Talk about an underappreciated force in that era of many huge talents! Hard Rock with progressive flavours much of this era of Mr Mister. And that performance of Broken Wings should be shown in musical institutions worldwide to students in how to execute and perform a live classic power ballad. Truly sensational.

If anyone can chime in with their backing tracks sequencers, I noticed the heavy bass was not coming from the main bass being played, not even the same notes being played. Anyone know what setup they were using for their backtracks, there is clearly backing tracks being used here along with their instruments as easily seen in Broken Wings, with the electric guitar solo fills and the bass. Notice the drummer always using his headphones when using the backing tracks look on Kyrie as he put them on right when he started the playback of the tracks. He did not use them on other songs which did not require special backtracks.
@jiggity76 Жыл бұрын
Yes, some backing tracks were being used. Pat Mastelotto, (the drummer), talks about that in some interviews. Particularly on Broken Wings. He suffered from some lower back pain throughout his career with Mr. Mister and due to that, he had to stand sometimes and had an elevated drum kit which in turn probably led to the band changing how things were done while performing.
@danfuerthgillis4483 Жыл бұрын
@@jiggity76 Good info nothing wrong with using instrument backgrounds due to the layers of the original, just no vocal backtracks should ever be used. Thanks 😊

@@danfuerthgillis4483 No problem. I've been listening to this performance daily now and can't get enough of these guys! An incredible performance and Richard has never sounded better. All these years I thought that it was a synthesizer producing those high notes at the end of Broken Wings and was amazed and astounded that it was Richard actually singing them! I also recently found out that Richard was born about an hour away from where I grew up! So crazy!

At 16 mins you can see the keyboard player loading a floppy disk (I’m almost sure). Maybe this was to load sequences for the keyboard? Is this the reason for the jamming type thing they are doing while he’s doing that….to allow time for the sequencing to be loaded?
