What you are watching my friend, are 8 members of the original members of the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo out of LA led by Danny's brother Richard. Richard leaves, Danny is now lead singer and songwriter and he and the 7 members with him on stage become what is known as a ska-new wave Rock N' Roll BAND, Oingo Boingo! Band is the key word here. These are REAL Artist not performers! Danny writes, produces, and performs HIS songs!!! It doesn't take nineteen writers and 6 producers. like what we have today! This is REAL music at it's best!
@pimenteldavid847 ай бұрын
@@dennisjashenskijr1546 Indeed. Not many people alive today understand what Oingo Boingo actually was: a rock band made from the zombified corpse of a theatre troop. All of these people are exceptionally skilled in multiple ways. They could move, they could play, they could sing; they had flare, they had style, they had synchronicity. This was like bringing an army to an anthill: rock music had no idea what hit it.

Pretty sure people realize it, hence why they have fans
@craigjohnson43025 ай бұрын
I think people in the know realize it, but the general music fans, not so much. When bands get this good they make complex music sound easy. Yes, the underlying complexity has its attraction, but most don't realize that's part of what' pulling them in. In the end it's easy level and smile giving melodies they latch onto.
@sooeycune8955 ай бұрын
@@craigjohnson4302 why does it matter? Arbitrary opinion is what sells best, who cares if people do or don’t understand the complexity. If you enjoy the music you enjoy it, doesn’t matter how well you do or don’t understand it. Most people that listen to music don’t know anything about it. Just like how most people who watch movies, look at paintings, architecture, etc. don’t know anything about it. The beauty of anything that is intrinsically art related is that you don’t have to understand it to enjoy it. So if you understand the complexity of it… cool. It’s not bad that people don’t

It's crazy how good the sound quality is on this show, all the instruments and harmonies coming through with great clarity. Those 2 big drum hits John plays when Danny sings "Don't run away its only me" on Dead Man's Party, I can't believe the sound on that. I'm not sure if it's the way his kit is mic'ed or the acoustics of the venue or what. There are a lot of more recent live performances by heavier bands I've listened to where the drums sound weak in comparison to that.

I figured it out, that drum sound is enhanced by a sound effect created by the keyboard player.

It looks like he might be hitting the bass drum mallet on a microphone instead of a bass drum, too.

His drums have triggers in them and the kick pedal is hitting an electric trigger that's all hooked up to samples.

It sounds like they may have used the sound off the mixing board, instead of just the camera mics or something equally-basic which is usually responsible for the weaker sounds you've heard elsewhere.

I discovered Oingo Boingo with “Little Girls” and the ‘Only A Lad’ album. I first saw them on their ‘Nothing To Fear’ tour. Then I saw them next ‘Dead Mans Party’ in the Santa Cruz arena. A couple more times after that. They remain my second favorite band after RUSH believe it or not!

Killer mix! Whoever’s running their board is a fucking star! Why do I not know the name of their bassist? He’s a bloody legend.

I went to many live performances of Oingo Boingo about a hundred years ago. Damaged my hearing in my geezerdom, but it was worth it!!! My sister dated Kerry Hatch, Boungo’s earlier bass player. Nice guy. Danny is more than gifted. Genius, IMHO

Great to have this. I wish we could also have a concert from the "Good For Your Soul" tour, with Hatch and Gibbs (the original bassist and keyboardist).

The first time I saw them in a small club they all popped out of these huge jack in the boxes. It was insane

These versions of the songs are better than the studio recordings, faster paced. Now the album versions seem so slow. 🥱

Seeing the mastery evident here, and the energy, it easy to see how mkotob came to dominate television and cable soundtracks.

I first saw Oingo Boingo in 1980, opening for XTC and The Police. Unfortunately it was so early in their career they'd released only an EP with no radio exposure other than a few college stations that played an early version of Only a Lad. They were onstage less than 30 minutes. I remember them as being charismatic and very tight, but - other than Only a Lad - without the memorable hooky songs that came soon afterward. I wish now I'd seen some of their later shows. And XTC and The Police were at the top of their games. Great concert, although very sedate. This was San Diego at a venue with a traditional auditorium setup, cops in the wings and lobby, and a pretty tame crowd. SD had a great local club scene, but the major shows were usually very professional but a bit lifeless.

I own one of those “Cat” ep’s! My first OB show was “Nothing To Fear”! How lucky for you to see them before that.

Thanks for uploading the whole thing! I remember seeing this as a young'un and discovering a whole new variant of Stupid Sexy St Stephen problem with this live record, along with the fantastic live take... Danny Elfman was something else in his youth, woof.
