Spiritual Unfoldment with John Butler

4 жыл бұрын

In this intimate portrait of his life as a farmer, traveller and spiritual journeyman, with reference to his upcoming new books, John Butler takes us on a journey of a life spanning the English Fens to the Russian tragedy of Revolution and its aftermath - all teaching us how to "bear an unbearable world." It includes clips from the newly available 1975 BBC documentary 'Three Acres at Bicker Fen'.
Did you know you can now listen to John on Spotify and other audio platforms? Here is his most popular recording 'Common sense guide to meditation' (1m views) - ffm.to/commonsenseguidetomedi....

John, this young man is very thankful for your stories. I've always been a bit of a 'lost soul' and struggle greatly with the same question you had, "What am I supposed to do?" Also, I've been obsessed with the mystery of this world since I was very young and that has unfortunately resulted in great isolation, which I now understand is self-imposed though it is true that most people seem reluctant to consider the mystery and unknowing, and some days it seems I'll not have a real connection with anybody. Loneliness makes the world seem so unbearable sometimes and it really drains the color from life as if it's all truly mechanistic meaninglessness, but hearing your stories of struggle through loneliness and to hear you as you are now is reinvigorating. Also, your candor is much appreciated, especially in talking of the mystical. Your humor about grim topics brings wholehearted laughter out of me. It's funny, I also always thought a woman would take away my loneliness, and I wanted to go out and fix the world but eventually became disillusioned with my grandiose ideas. I currently struggle with the size of the world, especially in choosing a path and how I can be sure that the path is not one I chose out of desire for power and influence. It seems stillness might be the answer. Perhaps I'll finally start meditating. Maybe I'll be able to visit in the future. Until then I can only give you and Phil my gratitude.
@furrygoose94

Hi Mason, you share a similar path to many a spiritual seeker before you (including me). I've been through/go through what you're talking about, so maybe I can share something from what I've learnt. It seems to me, all that is needed is a bit of a recontextualisation. What is a problem at one level (for the world) is actually a realisation on another, greater level, which is ultimately the learning of spiritual lessons. An example from what you've said: "I wanted to go out and fix the world but eventually became disillusioned with my grandiose ideas." - you became aware of an ego ideal and it's futility. That's a success, not failure. However, society (collective ego) sees 'fixing' as not only admirable but necessary. It is discontent with what it sees, and would like to intervene to 'make it better.' The world doesn't need fixing. Hitler wanted to fix the world, Marx wanted to fix the world. All the human atrocities came from people thinking that the world needs fixing. It is functioning exactly as it should be for the lessons that need to be learnt. To think we know better is really a vanity. What you came to realise is it is not 'the World' that needs addressing, but your perception of it. Whether one sees beauty or problems is a matter of perception. That is the beginning of responsibility, it's also the beginning of freedom! Also note, nothing is an accident. Coming across John Butler is no accident. Your path is no accident, your openness to meditation is no accident. Quite the contrary, it is a gift, which has been earned by your willingness. Best of luck, I send you love brother!

Out of the mind, into the stillness and then you will not choose, you will be flowed like a river flows effortlessly right into the ocean, brother I feel like , we become so lighter and lighter all that is excess, a load, unwanted keep falling off bit by bit day after day as we keep walking away from this ego towards openess, love , dear god whatever one calls it's, and slowly all the questions starts disappearing, one is awestruck and there are smiles, laughter, a dances.

Interesting, John, that the title of your book, "Mystic Forbearance," pertains to Russia and your maternal "forebearers" were from Russia. Love your gentle voice, your calmness which relaxes me so much and your concept of Spirit. I believe in fate, that God provides us with choices and that at any given time in our lives we are fated to choose a particular option. This and several aspects of your experiences which you convey, have helped me to give up on projecting, worrying about solving what I cannot possibly solve, trying to find the "why?" I do believe it is all in God's hands. All the best to you from the US.

Spiritual Unfoldment with John Butler Hi Phil. Some of it is too much to put here. But, after some months in hospital with depression in which a vicar spent time with me I found a peace. Now, it feels like coming home in a way. A kind of peace which I found relating to many of the comments which John related. I fully understand when he says that words are inadequate in this. When listening to your talks and (especially) reading your book I hear the Zen language being translated back into my Christian mother tongue. It's liberating to realize there is no difference, no truth nor weight to words, situations or things. Everything is me and means what it needs to to guide me closer... if that makes any sense 🤣 Thank you 🙏

The sense and tone of your voice surging through my body gives me a wonderful warming feeling to ponder and enjoy. Some might even go to the lengths of calling this video asmr, but i prefer to call this video a fantastic story telling time to catch up on the stories you might have missed from your own grand father or great grand father. The sound quality is obviously much better. I do enjoy hearing your voice this Christmas Eve John. I wrather enjoyed hearing you tell of your mother and life experiences. This particular video has made my night, and i thank you for this John. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

John, thank you for your heartfelt wisdom and love. Your talks are like golden arrows of light that fly so true they go right into my heart and soul. Oh, to be able to fly across the atlantic ocean, look into your eyes, learn from your example at a retreat... What a blessing you are to the world. I really look forward to reading your books, and joined your email group. Sending love and gratitude ♥️

Thank you John. You ask why we come to these videos... we come for the peace that you exude and that shines through your gaze and presence. Watching you, listening to you awakens hope and brings strength also, it is beyond the words you say, being close to you, even via a computer screen, is deeply calming and comforting...
