Hi Sir, I've been trying to compare poems in the Power & Conflict Poetry Anthology that most students don't usually compare. I was wondering if you could possibly give examples of comparisons between 'Kamikaze' and 'Checking Out Me History'. Both of these two poems have a strong theme of identity which I can't seem to put into words that would enable myself to get high marks. Additionally, another two poems, 'Emigrée' & 'Extract from the Prelude', are also poems I'd really want to compare with the theme of childhood and their past with nature and mankind but find the same issue with the other two poems as nobody else compares them from where I have seen. - Thanks!

Hi Mr. Salles! I have been seeing your videos and they have helped me a lot in improving my language and literature. I am currently doing the International GCSE Edexcel English literature course and below is an essay for one poetry question that I have written by following your BOSE method (without the T and other O). Could you please give me your feedback on this regarding improvements? Thank you so much for all your help. The question is for 30 marks and to be completed in 40 minutes. Show how the poets convey thoughts about others in Remember and one other poem from the anthology. Support your answer with examples from the poem. Christine Rossetti's 'Remember' and Dylan Thomas's 'Do not go gentle into that good night' convey their thoughts about others through the theme of death. Thomas addresses the helpless state to which old people are rendered to and "rage, rage against the dying of the light", encouraging them not to give in quietly to death; whereas Rossetti encourages her lover to remember her after her death (she feared she would die) before giving him permission to "forget and smile" than to "remember and be sad". Thomas commences with an imperative command: "Do not go gentle into that good night", begging readers not to go "gentle" into death and not give up without a fight. Thomas feels the elderly ("old age") need to be pushed to understand the value of living and "burn and rave" to do so just as fiercely as they would have done when they were younger. Much like Thomas's poem, 'Remember' features repeated imperatives which command a loved one. The poem begins as an appeal from the narrator to the loved one to remember her before she dies with a sad request, "Remember me when I am gone". The poet's view of death is ambiguous, and " when I am gone away/ Gone far away" may be seen as euphemistic, used to spare her partner the pain of their separation. Thomas uses tercets to give examples of men who "rage, rage against the dying of the light". There are the "wise me", "good men", "wild men" and "grave men" who can be seen as role models who have fought against death. Similar to Rossetti, he uses euphemism and symbols for death rather than stating it directly. The "night" is a metaphor for death, making "day" and "light" metaphors for life. While Rossetti concerns herself about feelings about her beloved, not wanting him to "remember and be sad", Thomas's use of sibilance when describing the wild men who "caught and sang the sun in flight" is a very positive contrast to his desperate plea for elders' and his father's survival. These men lived life to the fullest and did not waste a single minute, and while they "learn too late" the inevitability of death, they still fight on. Rossetti's use of "darkness" and "corruption" that seem harsh with their plosive 'k' sounds, suggest death with the decaying of the body, but also suggest the bad thoughts in her lover's mind that she does not want him to have. Thomas's use of the villanelle with a fixed rhyme using iambic pentameter seems a paradox, as it would often have a happy tone, but here it is used for more serious reflections. This suggests the intensity of his emotions to stay positive and fight against death in the face of it. Rossetti, however, opts for a Petrarchan sonnet, highlighting her love towards her addressee, while conveying her message. The octave asks her lover to remember her while her sestet introduces the idea that it might actually be better in some ways to forget, at least "for a while" - and the sentiment of the final lines is that the narrator would prefer her lover to be happy. Thomas ends with naming the last type of men: his father. Like with the rest of the poem, he wishes him to fight against death and writes "do not go gentle into that good night" and "rage, rage against the dying of the light" to emphasize his desire. These are also repeated lines in the poem. He asks his father to curse him just so he can see his youthful passion again. This poem does not have a change of perspective like Rossetti's.

No, the paragraph on from is your thesis statement: E.g. "Shelley chooses the sonnet form both because he is attacking the self love of Ozymandias, and also because he is trying to prove the enduring power of the "sculptor" in the poem and the enduring power of his own art, this sonnet." Notice this is also one sentence long. It doesn't have to be, but it is an exam, so it is worth practising this skill.

I'm intrigued by the structure you've made for poetry comparison. I normally try to compare the ideas first, what they both express and how they express the same thing differently (or different viewpoints they showcase it in) no matter how (i.e. whether through form, structure or language). Would you suggest, because i find that sometimes it's difficult to come up with a new idea that the poems both/individually express for every paragraph, that I try and base it more around this structure of allocating specific paragraphs for techniques? Thanks for continued helpful videos

sir what about the context
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 4 жыл бұрын
Here is the mark scheme. There is no requirement for context: "At the top of the level, a candidate’s response is likely to be a critical, exploratory, well-structured comparison. It takes a conceptualised approach to the full task supported by a range of judicious references. There will be a fine-grained and insightful analysis of language and form and structure supported by judicious use of subject terminology. Convincing exploration of one or more ideas/perspectives/contextual factors/interpretations." If you have some context relevant to interpretation, put it in. Otherwise, it is irrelevant.

I have a mock english literature exam (paper 2) tomorrow morning and was wondering how many quotes I would need to analyse. I was thinking maybe 3/4 quotes for each poem because I will only have around 45 minutes but some people said I would need to do more to achieve a grade 8/9, whats your take on this?

Although both Remains and Poppies examine the psychological impacts war creates, Armitage focuses on the PTSD soldiers encounter in their domestic life while Weir writes from the perspective of the homefront; a bereaved mother unable to progress without her missing son. Perhaps both poets convey similar viewpoints to show how war disrupts a person's ability to adjust to life postwar as their mentality is irrevocably reformed. In Remains, Armitage writes in a dramatic monologue to highlight the continuous conflict between the soldier’s consciousness that the “looter” was “probably armed” and his subconsciousness that he was “possibly” unarmed, and thus his killing was unjustified. Armitage writes in quatrains for the first seven stanzas but the last stanza is in the form of a dramatic couplet, signifying his vigorous guilt, hence cutting him off from his former self as he is unable to digest his immorality. Similarly, Weir also employs a dramatic monologue as a diatribe against war, which ruins countless families. The interchange between past and present tense demonstrates her inability to move on, as her life is tainted with the image of her son’s enigmatic fate. Maybe the poets do this to critique war as disrupting and damaging to both the home front and front line, who are unable to progress from the everlasting consequences of war.

Yes, I worried that someone might get BOOTSE wrong, and miss out on the structure part. Bootse done well is just as good.
