You gotta see the sketch in context, in the episode Velveteen Touch of a Dandy Fop. The whole show builds to the Coupon movie, and this sketch is early enough in the show that you don't catch the mention until you watch the episode again. It's one of the best Mr. Shows.

According to the commentary of this show, this scene wasn't meant to be hilarious or a joke about pretentiousness. It actually came about because bob and david were arguing about whether these two characters were friends or not. So they wrote and filmed it from there.

one of my favorite but pretty rare jokes during a sketch is when a character shares an opinion the writer clearly doesn't agree with or thinks is dumb so the character delivers it with a certain animosity like "People were not meant to hear music with such clarity.
