Essentially making them nearly an unpredictable wild card that can take down the strongest Villians while not being physically imposing themselves It doesn't even make them underdogs either, The team literally wouldn't be able to figure it out without them.

Mr. Terrific maybe smarter then average bear coming in at third in his universe. If intellect is the deciding factor then his taking on Reed Richards as the maker whose regarded as the smartest period Dr. DOOM a close second. Reed Richards can manipulate his body to monumental heights along with his long range ability would overwhelm. Mr Terrific forcing him to retreat and take cover or even suffocate him considering this version of Reed has no regard for life if provoked. As for Mr Terrific's invisibility it means his able to hide and stay alive for a time. Reed Richards can easily flush him out by stretching his bodies composition in its entirety throughout the area just because he can't be "seen" doesn't mean he can't be "heard". Reed Richards is a notch above due to his powers and cerebral complex as the fight ensues fatigue will set in for Mr. Terrific and Reed Richards the maker will send him to his "maker" no pun intended.

It's implied if not stated over and over in the lore that his being third smartest is him purposely presenting himself as such to make people underestimate him. His power IS knowledge itself-he can learn things basically immediately. With just one look at any alien tech he can decipher it and replicate it in less than a minute. In some iterations he's been able to successfully perform open heart surgery from just reading a book about it, lol. His ranking doesn't matter as much as his potential. And in terms of potential, if he really wanted, he COULD become the smartest in his universe based on what I've seen of him. There's nothing really stopping him but time and his own ego (he's a bit closed minded about things of the occult or spiritual matters). He really feels like a type of Batman who doesn't need prep time-he's perfectly capable of adapting on the fly and grasping complex concepts in a few seconds. I don't think it's as easy a victory as you think.

He literally built a teleporter to the negative zone in middle school. People said he was decades ahead of scientists at this time. I'm pretty sure building a teleporter at age 12> learning physics at a younger age since your actually applying it to something. Why would batman win? And how is he smarter? This reed Richards created a cosmic cube. That speaks louder than any feat you could say. Ultimate Reed Richards can keep up with the thing. Bullets do nothing to him. Reed shows the speed to react and wrap around a large mech bot, to block the radio signal, within a millisecond time frame. He pretty much stomps batman. Now for 616 reed Richards who I know more. Same old stuff. Mr. Terrific isn't smarter. This guy builds cosmic cube to power his stove. He built a reality-warping device that can make him see reality like a comic book. He made anti-gravity machines that literally tore a hole in the comic book (Although the device couldn't hold it so it broke and everything was back together but still), he makes clones out of inorganic stuff like Jell-O, he has a device that makes reality if he thinks it. His son used it and made an army of alive basketballs that were chasing him because he thought that, and that's not even it. And Batman is also not smarter. No one in DC is. Most people like to use that "cure for cancer" to say someone is smarter but Reed literally made over 10,000 cures for 10,000 kinds of poisons. Plus, Osborn made a cure for cancer. And let's not act like he's smarter than them both. Long post but worth it. And this isn't just for you, for anyone reading this who doesn't have a clue how smart he is now does.

He's also sent his (T-Spheres through time), improved others' technology and has achieved different things with his T-Spheres such as: Levitation/flight Laser beams Generating Electricity Exploding with the force to launch powerhouses on Superman's level Being invisible to technology Communicating and traveling through time and on a planetary level Hacking other technology Holograms Hard Light Constructs. In addition is trump card (Boom Spheres). They're incredibly powerful and can transport things between themselves which doesn't violate any BFR rules. They will do the same to Reed if need be, destroying him as they did the forcefield around Darkseid. Also in the New 52 he has a headquarters in (the 9th dimension) and, has (mastered dimensional travel), (created a planet-wide boom tube), (created multiversal travel via lensing), (recreated Mr. Miracle's aero discs via lensing), (created Boom Spheres, an exoskeleton) that boosts people to (beyond superhuman levels) and allows paralyzed people to walk, and so on. A verified genius who likes to claim 3rd smartest man, but his feats make him an easy contender for the smartest. And in conclusion The Maker self-admitted weakness being separately multiple universes at the same time which renders his intelligence subpar according to the multiverses different rules of reality this makes him vulnerable to Mister Terrifics dimensional travel which he mastered at the age of 6 years old. Reed Richards doesn't have a feat like that in the Marvel universe or multiverse. Mister Terrific Boom Spears was specifically made to destroy New Gods and with their dimensional traveling capabilities and phasing matters into one another, even capturing light constructs The Maker stands Lil to no chance..
