It's time for our first ever non-Japanese engine on Iconic engines, and we are starting with something pretty special, the engine that is likely BMW's best ever 4 cylinder. The legendary S14 four cylinder engine that powered the BMW E30 M3.
The BMW S14 engine is actually a Frankenstein engine, this being the case not because BMW was cutting costs, but because one of the greatest engine designers of all time, Mr. Paul Rosche had already designed so many great engines for BMW that there was no reason to work from scratch. The goal of the S14 was to turn the BMW E30 into a DTM champion. Initial plants to shove a straight six into an E30 M3 were abandoned in favor of a lighter four cylinder that could rev higher. A lighter engine meant lower weight and better weight distribution and balance which can be a lot more important than outright power in racing and motor sport.
So the BMW s14 engine got an M10 engine block, an M88 cylinder head (with two combustion chambers amputated) and some sexy ITBs. The S14 and BMW e30 M3 combo were so good that the BMW e30 m3 became the most successful touring car of all time. When it comes to touring car championships and Group A racing the BMW e30 m3 won pretty much everything.
When it comes to the specs the S14 engine has 93.4 mm of bore and 84 mm of stroke. This gives us an over-square engine design which makes sense because the BMW S14 was designed to spend most of it's time in the high rev range. However, the basic 2.3 liter version, S14B23 wasn't the only available displacement for the S14. Italian and Portuguese markets got a 2.0 liter version which was created by reducing the stroke, while Europe got the 2.5 liter EVO 3 engine at the end of the BMW e30 m3 production run. On top of the cast iron M10 engine block we can find a aluminum alloy cylinder head with dual over head camshafts (DOHC) and a bucket and shim on top of a bucket pushing onto the valves. The camshafts are chain driven and the chain is a good dual row design which doesn't cause any issues. The same can't be said about the S14 chain tensioners, BMW used several different versions and some caused problems with chain stretch and wear. This is why many S14 owners choose to upgrade to the S50 or S52 chain tensioner. The camshafts have 240 degrees of duration and a very impressive 10 mm of lift on both the intake and the exhaust. The power output of the BMW s14 ranged from 189 hp to 235hp for the EVO 3 engine. The US market received only the 192 2.3 liter S14 engine which made 192 hp and had a catalytic converter.
When it comes to tuning the bmw s14 engine really is a racing engine adapted to use in normal traffic. As such it's incredibly fun to drive hard even if you don't tune it. You have to understand that this engine needs to be driven hard to be enjoyed, it makes all of it's performance in the top 1000 - 2000 rpms, so if you think it's slow or doesn't have any torque you really are missing the point. How to get more power? For mild tuning you won't be touching the intake or the exhaust manifold because you really won't gain anything there. Some mild camshafts will can get some gains, most will be gained by replacing the stock Bosch motronic ecu with a modern standalone ecu, if you know what you're doing with the fuel and ignition maps you can get some horses and also an aftermarket ecu will allow you to get rid of the stock flap style air flow meter which hampers performance. What about big NA power on the S14? Sure, just do what BMW did in the DTM. This will make you broke but you will have a road illegal engine that's massive fun. Wild cams, throttle slides instead of plates, crazy 4 into 1 headers, porting the intakes, increased displacement, increased compression, dry sump, and you can expect 350 hp. What about a turbo s14? Sure it can be done but be ready that the car will loose massive value. An alternative is to swap something into your e30 m3, get big power out of your system, conserve the s14 and then swap it back when you get bored of the s50 or whatever else you swapped in there. Supercharged S14? Yeah you can do that too, but good luck finding the parts.
Rap translation:
I have an awesome cylinder head
What are you waiting for, press the start button
I'm the fastest engine on the Hockenheim
I'm so fast there
Nobody can overtake me
My name is the BMW S14
and I'm the greatest engine you will ever see.
It all rhymes in German....I swear.

To be fair the BMW M1 was the first M car that started this lineage. Though arguably the 3.0 CSL was the first M car, despite not having an m badge. Then the M535i, the M 635 CSI, the M5, and then finally the e30 m3. Though iirc there was a updated m535i somewhere in there. Interesting also to see how much they experimented with M placement and the spacing before and after the numbers and letters

I only got thru 100 comments, so I hope I’m not repeating. I started playing with BMWs in 1972 while working in a body shop that did the work for the first dealer in upstate NY....when they were”British Motor Works”. In 1982, I met Jim Rowe...founder of Metric Mechanic. Wow. 40 years of tireless R&D on BMW engines / trans/ diffs. Now that I’m retired, i fly out to MO ever 3 months to work in the shop and improve my knowledge and skills. I work for free room and board for the week. It doesn’t get any better than that! If you have a n S14 project, give him a call. 40+ years of improving bmw engines.

I have only had BMW E34 M5 3.8 with S38B38 engine. Stock power 340 hp and 400 nm torque naturally aspirated. It’s similar type motor as S14 just six cylinder inline with larger 50 mm ITB’s and larger valves and 90 mm stroke. It would be great if you could do a video of M88 / S38 type engines. M1 race cars had naturally aspirated six cylinder 3.5 liter motor versions with around 470-490 hp power output at very high rpm for inline six at that time.

One small correction, it was the S88 engine in the M1, and M635csi. Unfortunately, my own M635csi needs an Electromotive system because the OE one has injector pulse issue we cannot figure out how to rectify. Other than that, your videos are excellent, certainly among the best, if not very best l've been fortunate to find on YT. Have you done anything on the first V8 BMW M5 engine the S62? I once had a 2002 M5 and what I did to spruce it up was re-flash the ECM, eliminate the screen and plastic grating inside the Mass Air Sensors as per Dinan's advice coupled with K&N air filters and install a stainless steel Borla Catback exhaust because BMW for some crazy reason crushed the exhaust pipes down to 50% in diameter right in front of the differential increasing the backpressure. I suspected they put these band aids on the car to limit the horsepower to 400 hp. I also replaced the dual mass flywheel with an aluminum 13.5 lb. flywheel and Kevlar high performance clutch. The engine revved like an air tool when I did that. With all of the resulting increase in power and response I had to send the pressure plate out to maximize the clamping force because it would slip under hard acceleration. The clutch and pressure plate is was a flaw in my opinion of the E39 M5. I also ran into issues with the differential as I had ripped the anemic brackets off that held the differential to the frame and had to reinforce the brackets, another flaw of the E39. All the fun occurred however when you pressed the DSC button disabling the traction control, the car would be all over the road in the first 3 gears. It was truly a sleeper if you didn't know what an M5 was.

Quick anecdote from an engine book I've got. From an interview of a BMW F1 race team engine builder, they would go out to wrecking yards to find old clapped out sedans with the highest mileage they could find and pull the M10 blocks for cores. The thinking was that these engines with tons and tons of hours on the clock would have all the casting stresses out of them and would hold up to grenade-spec boost the best. Seeing as these cars were laying down 900 to 1500 horsepower with factory stock iron blocks and NOT blowing up they might have been on to something.

Very sad we didn't get this M3 in South Africa. We had to create our own homologation special, the 325is, with the Alpina 2.7 M20 engine. This was to compete against the South Africa only Opel Kadett Superboss with the Delta modified C20XE, stock with Getrag LSD gearbox amongst other thing. Also interesting is that South Africa also made a 333i with the M30 engine also helped build by Alpina. We also made the Opel Kadett 200ts with a C20LET and 6 sped LSD Getrag which debuted with 160kw (215hp) in 1994.

You can remove the flap MAF with a heated wire MAF. There is a product called a "MAF translator" which interprets data from a new heated wire sensor, then sends data to the ECU that is exactly like the flap MAF. Some call the OEM sensor a "VAF." It is good for a few horsepower by itself. I think some people mod their Datsun 280ZXT to accept a 300ZXT heated wire MAF for example. 23:14 There is another way. Have you heard of offset grinding? By grinding the crank throws off center and then welding them up, you can lengthen the stroke by a few millimeters. 29:00 Plus, with 10:5:1 or more of compression, you couldn't run much boost anyway. It would probably be required to buy lower compression pistons.

Having driven a tuned s14 (I admit I didn't go over 7000rpm, I am to afraid of breaking something), I wouldn't want to own one. The car is amazing, but there is no point in having one if you don't rev it to moon, which with an engine worth 3 years of rent I wouldn't want to do to often. On top of that, the s14 is 3 times as much as an s54, imagine how much more fun you would have with an s54, knowing you have 2 more ready to drop in when you throw a rod!

Great video. We still occasionally see E30 M3 track cars come through the shop with built 2.5 liter Evo engines and aftermarket engine management (to eliminate that horrible airflow meter from the stock setup) and they easily produce 275+ whp using race gas on the chassis dyno. That's incredibly impressive for an engine design whose genesis was nearly 40 years ago. Fully agree with naming this engine one of the all time greats.

The S14 I forgot to adk for, only had the M42 engine in a E30, was fun to drive even with low power, the engine liked the revs and the gearbox was great. So I want to ask, please bring a video of the M42/M44 maybe compare and as always wanted to see the Ford Duratec, the 1.7 Zetec S and the OHC Pinto ✌ Nice video PS: Your german is really ok 👍

M42 is a wonderful engine, currently building a turbo m42 for my e30 with around 300hp on all stock internals. There's plenty of mods for these motors and they have a ton of untapped potential from my own findings and many others.

When I was 16 (2004) I opted to get a 2000 dollar 87 325is and instead of a 8500 dollar 88 or 89 m3 🤣 all because i didn't wanna borrow 1500 from my dad to get it. I would of probably fuked it up though. Idk though cause I still have my e30 sitting at my dads house. I'll never know

I owned an E30 M3. I can confirm, anyone who thinks they would love to drive one will be very disappointed. I never took it on the track so can't comment on that.

The people that complain about these things being too slow and not fun are the same people that complain about the S2000 being slow. You take something tuned 100% for the high end and drive it like a tractor and it's going to be slow. If you don't hit limiter at least sometimes you aren't going hard enough.

This channel's content is wayyyy better and more in depth than most youtube channels about learning the history of cars. Fucking Donut Media sounds like they read off of Wikipedia with very limited fundamental knowledge about the topic. Keep killing it with the knowledge!

I own an E30 M3 with its original S14 engine. Be careful with these, costs to rebuild one properly ranges from $15,000 to $30,000. The guy who had mine had it rebuilt at 65,000 miles and receipts showing more than $20,000. Doing the 2.3 the 2.5 is not recommended and it takes someone who really knows what they are doing to do it right.

I’ve worked on a few and driven several. I used to work as a mechanic at my uncles shop in Los Angeles. Never beat up the car just test drove after repairs were maid. I ended up purchasing 90 BMW 325 because of it. Completely rebuild the whole thing, sold it for cheap to a youth pastor that really wanted it. He then loaned it to a member from church and crash it 🤦🏻‍♂️. I wish I never sold it.

Hi, love your videos, I have owned one of these cars many years ago, I would love it if you did the Nissan vg30t engine single cam ... I had one of these in the late 80s it was in a z31 and was a factory turbo Nissan fairlady ... in the late 80s we modified it and was proving 450ho at the wheels and was for a long time one of the fastest street cars in New Zealand. Cheers Pieter
