Today on Iconic engines it's time for our first Honda engine, and it's only right to start with an engine that holds a very special place in Honda's lineage. The engine that brought vtec to the game, the engine that did for import tuning what the Chevy small block did for muscle cars. Today it time to see what makes the legendary b16 engine great.
The b16 hit the market in 1989 in the form of the first generation b16a, and the first car that had a b16 in it's engine bay was the Japanese market Honda Integra XSi. Very soon after the B16 found its way into the engine bays of many other Hondas, including the Honda CRX, the Civic, the Civic Del Sol and more Integras. When it came out the B16a engine had a power output of 160 hp. Having a displacement of 1.6 liters this meant that the b16 hit he magical figure of 100 hp per liter of engine displacement. At that time the competition wasn't even close to this power output. How did the b16 engine manage such a power output? The answer VTEC!
As you probably know VTEC stands for variable valve timing and lift electronic control. And what it essentially does is provide an engine with two camshaft profiles instead of one. In the case of an dual overhead camshaft engine like the b16 it provides the engine with four camshaft profile instead of two, two for the intake, and two for the exhaust. Honda's VTEC managed to eliminate one of the major constraints of engine design. Engineers were forced to compromise for decades and choose a camshaft that has good idle, torque and fuel efficiency in the low and mid-range and decent performance in the high rpm range. VTEC changed the game by allowing large camshaft lift and duration in the high rpm range and good idle and driveability in the low rpm range.
Honda's VTEC technology actually started with a motorcycle. The first mass produced variable valve timing from Honda was called REV and was found on the 1983 Honda CBR 400. It operated two valves below 9000 rpm and four valves above 9000 rpm. It proved that variable valve timing could be mass produced and that it had actual benefits for economy and performance.
When you look at the specs list of the b16 engine and remember that it hit the market in 1989 things become really impressive. It also reveals another fact, the fact that Honda was kicking ass in Formula 1 in the late 80s, and many of those racing spec technologies trickled down to the b16. Great attention to detail was given to everything by the man behind VTEC in cars and his team of engineers. This man was Ikuo Kajitani, and he recalls that developing a 100 hp per liter engine at the time seemed like a dream. The dream was eventually made possible with incredible dedication and hard work that gave birth to the b16 engine, a legendary small displacement high performance engine that not only had 100 hp per liter, but was reliable and became legendary for the abuse it could handle. The wild cam on the b16a has 10.7 mm of lift on the intake. The wild cam on the b16b has 11.5 mm on the intake. This was a race only spec at the time. Even the BMW S14 which was a homologation engine has only 10 mm of lift on the intake cam. The b16a also had dual valve springs, a special alloy and surface and heat treatment of the camshafts, a very high compression of 10.2-10.2 (10.8 on the b16b) and much much more. By the way, the different version of the b16a, the b16a2, b16a3, b16a5, and b16a6 are pretty much the same engine. The differences are minor and are down to camshaft profiles, ecu tunes, compression and the different markets where they were exported to.
When it comes to tuning, the b16 is one of the most tuned engines in history. Countless builds have been done, turbo, twin turbo, supercharging, twin charging, nitrous, all motor, everything has been done. Every b16 tuning guide imaginable has been written. The b16 aftermarket is still very much alive and these engines are still being built today, despite being 30 years old. If that is not a testament to the greatness of the b16 engine design, than nothing is. By far the most popular thing to do nowadays is to turbo the b16. Despite it having an open deck aluminum block the b16's weakest link is the b16 owner. Many people crank up the bosst of the b16, rely on a weak tune and hope for big power. The result is most often a blown engine and a loud angry owner trying to convince everyone how weak the b16 is and how it shouldn't be boosted without block guards, sleeves and every possible overkill mod. Of course this is wrong. People have pushed the stock b16 block with nothing but forged pistons and a turbo to 450-500 hp.

Keep in mind that, although the B16B is technically a ‘B16’, it is NOT a B16A. It is actually a destroked B18C5 rather than a souped up B16A. As such, it uses the taller B18C block and longer rods. This gives it a better rod ratio than the B16A (1.83:1 vs 1.74:1) for lower piston side loading and internal stresses at high RPM. Of course, the B16B was never a terribly popular engine for swapping due to the fact that it costs almost as much as a B18C5, which has greater power and torque.

Dual low/hi cam maps 24x20 for ign and fuel, tps based vtec, pwm boost w/boost by gear, 2step/rpm limits, general purpose IO, traction control, flex fuel..so much

Thought I chime into what you said about the camshafts. All honda performance vtec engine's use 3 different cam profiles per camshaft known as the primary, secondary and middle lobes. The first two are the smaller lobes and are asymmetric meaning the primary is bigger and has an overall different profile then the secondary and that is to create a tornado like swirl in the combustion chamber for better fuel efficiency. And then the middle being the vtec lobe for higher rpm operation. So in total there are 6 different lobe profiles.

The H series took everything from the B series to a new level. I'd love to drop a high comp H into my 1991 civic... but it needs a lot of exterior and interior work, and a handful of prayers. 😂 Love the Honda engines, love the old Hondas in particular.

As a Honda fan and tuning maniac, my life purpose is an awd s2000 f20c or f22c. The best production engine EVER! Now, good luck to find an adequate engine that doesn't come from a crash. Perhaps a CTR limited edition awd conversion and building would be awesome too

I'm a motorcycle lover but i love engines. I restored my dads 20 years old honda wave 100 which is a low CC's square engine but i upgraded the block to a 56mm bore and retained its stroke to 49.5mm. Upgraded its valves from 24mm intake and 19mm exhaust to a 28mm intake and 24mm exhaust. Same camshaft but with harder spring for high rpms and minimizing valve float. And it works great in low to mid rpm but lacking in high rpm but my dad loves it's performance. After i bought a 4 valve head with 6.5 camshaft lift and a 19mm in 17mm ex its performance boost matching those 150ccs 2valve engines with its peak but suffer in low rpms and its torque kick in at 6000rpms so i switch to the 2 big valve design for city and offroad performance.

Cant tell you how many b series ive built. Most times the only thing ive changed were the pistons, rods, head studs, and fuel system. Other than that all stock and many over 450-600hp. One of which i daily drove 2 years.

Honda always made impressive small displacement NA engines. My utmost respect goes to them. Also, the S2000 and NSX (original). aarrgh!!!. And considering I am an S54, Rotary and Busso fanboy, that is a lot of praise. I truly missed out on those 2, I was too young to afford them then, and now that I am older, I cannot afford their skyrocketing prices :-( . Don't feel too bad though, Even though they got away, I still got my dream machines with S54, 13B and 3SGTE engines inside :-) Maybe one day, who knows. ;-)

The b series altogether is great. Combinations with transmission gears IMO are what make these cars great. If you’re looking to drag race, using a b16 transmission with longer 4th and 5th gears are masterful modifications. Because the b16 transmission gesrs are so short, this allows power to be gained quickly, and also toward the end when the power is already balanced, you have more ratio in your powerband. For road racing, a stock b16 will destroy in the mountains.

Being someone who put a built B18 swap in my 91 Crx Hf back in 2004 and how deeply I loved that car as it had the best of everything , the B series Honda motors truly are one of the top 5 best engine families in a mass produced vehicle ever made PERIOD and btw the vtec Bseries motors came with dual valve springs to avoid having valve floating from occuring when at high Rpm's , also just a question and I very well may be wrong here on this one didnt the B16B have the exact same bore size as its big brother the B18c5 ITR engones ? I always was under the impression that they both used the exact same engine block , that being the block already being used in the 1.8L Integra Type R's , diffeerences for the b16b that i thought were only cams , pistons rods and crank shaft, so i always thought the B16b was the only b16 ever made that had a different bore size than the rest. I may very well be wrong though.. Got a suggestion for another fantastic nearly indestructible , easy and cheap to maintain engine family that built itself a true legacy of being indestructable and I think would make a good video is the inline 6cyl family of Jeep engines starting with the old AMC 3.6 or 3.7 engine , then next they built a 4.2L version that came in the Jeep CJ5's , CJ7, CJ8 and 87-90 Jeep Wrangler YJ, then in 1987 AMC created the latest and what would bevome the mpst well known and famously indestructable inline 6 which was the 4.0L inline 6, which they initially put in the 1987-1990 Jeep Cherokee and Commanchees , then it became even tougher and considerably more reliable when Chrysler bought out AMC Chrysler revised and updated rhe 4.0 creating the 1991 4.0 High Output which came in 91-2001 Jeep cherokees , 91-92 Jeep Commanchees , 91-2005 Jeep Wrangler TJ and the 93-2005 Grand Cherokees. Unfortunately the 4.0 inline 6 was no longer produced after 2005 supposedly according to Chrysler because they couldn't any longer modify it to conform to more and more increasingly strict nation emissions laws and restrictions on automobiles in the US , but that 4.0 straight 6 def is one of the top 5 most reliable and indestructible engines ever made period.
